They are perfectly fine with the environmental and humanitarian impact of shipping the oil in from OPEC countries because its a NIMBY situation. "Well, its not us doing the bad stuff so its okay" was the mindset.

It was mostly during the NDP reign that this started happening and that was because they were trying to appease the federal government at the time. Companies just said fuck it not worth it and pulled out. NDP couldn't enforce shit because they had no power to enforce it because other places were like "yeah come on it" so there was no reason to stay in canada
