The problem with your argument, DP, is that it doesn't take into account Guns per Capita.

Pre-Columbine, GPC was under somewhere I believe 5. After Columbine it rose to like 13 Guns per Capita.

So it's more to do with the general availability of guns included with the mental health and media coverage.

There are a 120 guns per 100 US citizens. We have the most guns per capita. And yet, by those same metrics we’re only 46th for most homicides per capita and 30th for gun related homicides. Having the ability to find a gun doesn’t make you decide to kill someone. Wanting to kill someone does.

Gun ownership also spikes anytime there’s talk of gun controls laws, but the access to get those weapons was still there before 1999. Something else changes that drive people’s desires to want to kill people and it’s pretty easy to see what changed going into the new millennium.
