From anecdotal experience I'm pretty sure people were originally called drug fiends but we lost the word fiend in it to a separate pronunciation that became it's own slang

i was around and still use drug fiend in that sense ya

Yeah pretty sure it transitioned to a verb as someone "fiending" for a drug or really anything else from that. Seeing stuff like this in more real time makes understanding language evolution in history so much easier, it's all slang and fake basically lol
