Somewhat, GRRM really took from historical England mostly tho. Like A LOT of exact stories from that history being almost identical in the books lol

Between Romulus Augustulus, Nepos being assassinated in Croatia, Odoacer stealing Northern Italy and then subsequently getting ass-blasted by Theodoric, whatever the fuck Clovis was doing in Gaul, the Eastern Empire having a civil war between Zeno and Basiliscus, the Jutes/Angles/Saxons invading Sub-Roman Britannia, Anastasios I dying without an heir allowing for Justin and then Justinian to take power, and then of course we got the Sassanid dynasty as a whole.

Tbh I think the overall reason people call 476-800 the "Dark Ages" so much is because there was no real centralized power like the Eastern Empire, it was all smaller kingdoms or tribes just duking it out for regional power. It wasn't until Charlemagne that Western Europe had a singular centralized authority.
