The dev team wanted to use the Voodoo2/Voodoo Banshee graphics units as well as the Motorola Power PC (which would have made the Dreamcast even more powerful than the PS2, unabashedly), but SEGA Japan forced the team to use an inferior Japanese processor.

The Saturn is honestly just a case of "wrong place, wrong time, and zero communication between company branches", while the Dreamcast was just a bunch of executive meddling which hindered their ability to garner 3rd party support. A stronger Dreamcast *with* 3rd party support would have saved the company imo

Yeah it was so bad that 3dfx sued SEGA for breach of contract because of it.
