ZSJ vs. Naito - was an incredible match, really technical, fluid and clean. Already set a really high bar for the rest of the G1

Yeah it was it takes alot for Naito to tap out and Sabre JR pushed him to a point that he hasn't been to pain level wise. You saw he was broken in half on the Mat after I wouldn't be shocked to see them use him being hurt further in the tourney and a lingering injury with his Match with Sabre JR screws him over later during a big Match to trying to win the Block. Day 2 was fine Okada/Tana I've seen up and down the River over the Years that doesn't mean the Matches don't get me excited. I found myself loving Tonga/Sanada he had for that surprise win late and I wouldn't of mine of a loss there for Sanada to give Tonga some juice in the tourney. Goto/Taichi always have good Matches and theirs something else and they talked about during the English Commentary Miho Abe being with Taichi he often fights harder because of his presence. She gives him more confidence more than any other Suzuki Gun Member past or presently and it's wonderful to watch.

Day 3 thank goodness is Thursday give me time to catch up with some Joshi Shows I plan to watch till then. Ibushi/Ishii should be angry as hell at each other from their losses and Sabre JR/Shingo boy that is going to be incredible to watch trying to see if Sabre JR can make another Los Member tap out.

For him to withdraw from The G1 it must be really bad and I thought the way he looked vs Sabre JR was so scripted and I guess he was really was injured. Get well Naito.

A massive shame since that match with ZSJ was the best match of the first round of matches - part of me thinks its a work, but Tetsuya has a history with his knees so hard to tell

G1 Climax Night 4 (September 24) Preview
B Block do battle in Ota
20210918_G1_%E6%98%9F%E5%8F%96%E8%A1%A8_EN_B_OL.png

Friday night in Ota, it’s the turn of B Block in their second matches of the G1 Climax 31 campaign. Half the field look to extend their scores, while the other half are trying to get on the board as the tournament continues.

Main event: Kazuchika Okada (1-0) vs EVIL (1-0)
Singles record: 5-2 Okada, G1 record: 2-1 Okada

G1_20210924_05.jpg

Sunday in Osaka saw what could well be one of, if not the most enduring memories of G1 Climax 31 made, as Kazuchika Okada defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event to get his first two points, and declared that the Rainmaker had returned. Yet the same night’s tournament action began with EVIL gaining his first two points by doubling down on the shortcuts and rule breaking that have defined his own career over the last 15 months, casting a shadow over the remainder of the evening as Dick Togo’s interference and a low blow led to YOSHI-HASHI tasting defeat.

Okada is well aware of how dangerous EVIL is both as a relatively straight laced, if rough-hewn competitor, and as a man willing to take every available chance to cheat his way to the top. In G1 Climax 2016, their first singles meeting in Osaka saw Okada’s unbeaten streak that year derailed by the King of Darkness, while the 2020 New Japan Cup final saw EVIL cement his defection to BULLET CLUB from Los Ingobernables De Japon with an interference marred victory.

Okada started his 2021 determined to get back in New Japan’s top flight, and decided that exorcising the spectre of his NJC 2020 final defeat would be the best way to do it. EVIL frustrated the Rainmaker at every turn in his quest to get the singles bout, including a Hiroshima sham of a match that quickly ended in a disqualification, but ultimately it was Okada victorious at Castle Attack at the end of February. Can Okada maintain his momentum against EVIL after bad Osaka memories were banished, and proud ones created after another match of the year candidate with Tanahashi last weekend?

4th Match: SANADA (1-0) vs Taichi (1-0)
Singles record: 2-0 SANADA

G1_20210924_04.jpg

SANADA and Taichi both seek to move to four points in the semi main event of the evening, in a match built on some mutual respect between the competitors, albeit tempered by a good bit of frustration on Taichi’s part. In two singles confrontations, SANADA has scooped the win, both with flash pinning combinations rather than a convincing impact or submission. Taichi was able to enact some revenge for his defeats at MetLife Dome, when he was able to blind tag himself in and SANADA out in the IWGP Tag team Championship three way and pick up the victory for Dangerous Tekkers, but this is a match that Taichi desperately doesn’t want to lose.

Despite SANADA’s artful means of securing victory over the Holy Emperor belies a knowledge that this match will likely be a violent one indeed. Taichi’s opener against Hirooki Goto set a hard hitting standard for his matches to come, and when these two men met in Osaka two months ago, the result was a match that threw back to Taichi’s idols of All Japan of old, with head dropping maneuvers to match. With pride along with points at stake, this should be an impactful bout.

3rd Match: YOSHI-HASHI (0-1) vs Jeff Cobb (1-0)

G1_20210924_03.jpg

A first time singles matchup in the third bout of the evening sees Jeff Cobb look for his second win of the tournament while YOSHI-HASHI fights for his first. Despite facing a game Chase Owens in Osaka, Cobb showed every bit of the speed, power and precision that makes him one of the tournament favourites, and will be a tough mountain to climb for YOSHI-HASHI. After showing trademark heart in the face of a stacked deck against EVIL in Osaka though, does the Headhunter have what it takes to get on the board?

2nd Match: Tama Tonga (0-1) vs Chase Owens (0-1)
G1_20210924_02.jpg

After Yujiro Takahashi meets KENTA on Thursday night, the second BULLET CLUB derby of this year’s G1 sees Tama Tonga and Chase Owens face off. Both Tonga and Owens have talked about wanting to be recognised for their own abilities as being deserving of their spots in this tournament, and both are likely to fight hard regardless of allegiance tonight.

Opposite Jeff Cobb and SANADA, Owens and Tonga brought energy and aggression to their opening efforts that presented difficulties to top flight opposition. To what lengths will they go to get their first wins of G1 31?

1st Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi (0-1) vs Hirooki Goto (0-1)
Singles record: 10-2 Tanahashi G1 record: 3-1 Tanahashi

G1_20210924_01.jpg

Testament to a card full of intriguing encounters, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Hirooki Goto kick off the evening with a match continuing a 17 year history. Tanahashi has brought the hard hittign best out of Goto, in particular since Goto’s 2007 return from excursion, and an IWGP heavyweight Championship bout that year that remains a career favourite of both men. Yet despite the heavy duty offense of Goto leaving more than a few marks on Tanahashi, wins have been thin on the ground for Goto.

New Japan Cup 2012 was when Goto finally cracked the Tanahashi nut, to win the cup that year. In last year’s G1, a second win for Goto over the Ace kept him alive toward the end of the tournament while Tanahashi was effectively eliminated. Can Goto, undefeated in tonight’s venue in four singles bouts, grab a third tonight in Ota, where Tanahashi lingers at 1-3?

What a fucking match bro, saved all of N3 from not being a disaster lmao that was amazing, and credit to Kelly and Charlton for telling the most amazing fucking story announcing to go along with it using history going back to a fucking wXw tournament in 2009. Zack gonna have the early run before blowing it at the end probably :slip:

Ishii/Ibushi was awesome too, they've just had much better in the past really and the story was still more about Ibushi's return than anything. I wouldn't watch O-Khan/Yano or KENTA/Yujiro if I was anyone sane.

G1 Climax night 5 (September 26) Preview
A Block hits Kobe
20210918_G1_星取表_EN_A_OL-1.png

Night four of the G1 Climax 31 campaign sees A Block in action in Kobe World Hall, with four block matches, IWGP World Heavyweight Champion in a non title bout with Yuji Nagata and a special opening contest in store.

Main Event: Kota Ibushi (2-1) vs Zack Sabre Jr.(2-0)
Singles record: 5-2 Ibushi G1 record: 3-0 Ibushi
G1_20210926_06.jpg

The G1 has had its history of impressive win streaks, from the debut runs of Jon Moxley and KENTA to the dominance of Kenny Omega or Kazuchika Okada in opening phases of the tournament in years past. Yet it’s hard to recall a hotter start in the G1 than Zack Sabre Junior has experienced in his first two matches this year. After starting in Osaka with a submission that didn’t just tap out Tetsuya Naito, but put him out of the entire competition, Sabre moved to Ota ward, and vanquished 12 year old memories with a submission win over IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Takagi.

With a statement made against the best of the best in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, ZSJ could almost justifiably rest on his laurels, but will instead be moving to dominate the entire field, and could well do so, especially if he were to submit Kota Ibushi. Since a blistering tapout victory over the Golden Star back in 2018’s New Japan Cup, Sabre has found Ibushi difficult to deal with more often than not, the two time G1 winner moving to a 5-2 record against Zack. Yet Ibushi’s own four points have come not from convincing submissions, but Naito’s forfeit and a very scrappy victory over Tomohiro Ishii that was more about survival than dominance. Should Ibushi have any issues in Kobe, they will be swiftly punished by Sabre, but this could also be where Ibushi reasserts his top flight status.

5th Match: Tomohiro Ishii (1-2) vs KENTA (2-1)
Singles record: 2-0 KENTA

G1_20210926_05.jpg

Tomohiro Ishii heads into the third match of his campaign with two points, but without a victory to his name. Tetsuya Naito’s withdrawal has granted the Stone Pitball a win with a gigantic asterisk, and a man as proud as Ishii is will be doubly eager to defeat KENTA tonight.

Not that he needs any extra motivation. In August 2019, KENTA joined BULLET CLUB by turning his back on a tag team match with Ishii, leading to a NEVER Openweight Championship match at Royal Quest in London. The hard hitting bout would rattle the usually completely stoic Ishii and grant KENTA his first championship in New Japan. There followed a campaign of humiliation directed at the CHAOS member en route to a rematch that November at Power Struggle, one where Ishii once again fell short. Now Ishii is bound and determined to score his first singles win over his BULLET CLUB foe, and get his first official win of the G1 in the process.

4th Match: Toru Yano (2-1) vs Tanga Loa (1-1)
G1_20210926_04.jpg

While Tanga Loa earned his own first career G1 points via forfeit, he had to work for his first win of the tour in Ota Thursday night, being pushed to the limit by Yuji Nagata who targeted the Silverback’s knees before Loa managed to find Apesh*t.

If Nagata had Loa working hard physically in the ring, Yano will be testing his mental acumen as the game of human chess will no doubt see a fair few sneaky maneuvers in Kobe. After beating KENTA in his first campaign match, can Yano make it two for two in BULLET CLUB members, or might it be Loa joining him on four points?

3rd Match: Great-O-Khan (3-0) vs Yujiro Takahashi (2-1)
G1_20210926_03.jpg

The only man on six points in the tournament, Great-O-Khan sits alone on the top of the standings in A Block, and after finally getting revenge on Toru Yano for his shorn off braids from the New Japan Cup, is likely to be in high spirits tonight, post match low blow from Yano notwithstanding.

Tonight, O-Khan faces a Yujiro who has upset Kota Ibushi, and brought a surprisingly intense level of competition to KENTA in his two efforts to date. This will be no easy subjugation for O-Khan as he continues his campaign of dominance, but there exists a chance for O-Khan to move to end the first third of his campaign on eight points in a winnable environment.

2nd Match: Yuji Nagata vs Shingo Takagi
G1_20210926_02.jpg

Originally scheduled for a long awaited LIJ derby against tetsuya Naito in Kobe, Shingo Takagi will be frustrated at Tetsuya Naito’s absence tonight, but will instead be looking for a fight against a man who is more than capable of bringing just that, Yuji Nagata. Nagata will have no doubt watched the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion submit to an armbreaker in Ota, and will likely target the weakened limb as he will make the Dragon work as hard as possible for the two points earned via forfeit tonight.

1st Match: Master Wato vs Kosei Fujita
G1_20210926_01.jpg

The latest Young Lion test of the G1 tour will see Kosei Fujita hit the ring in the openeing match of the night against Master Wato. After being punished inside the ring and out by SHO, Wato will present a different kind of offense for Fujita to try and deal with in Kobe; can he impress the young master tonight?
