G1_20210919_06.jpg

Main event: Hiroshi Tanahashi (0-0) vs Kazuchika Okada (0-0)
Singles record: 6-5-3 Okada G1 record: 1-0-3 Okada

Almost three years to the day since their last meeting in Japan at Destruction 2018, and over two years since they did battle in G1 Climax 29 in Dallas Texas, Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi’s legendary rivalry sees a new chapter etched in Osaka. 14 matches over the past decade have seen Ace and Rainmaker evenly matched, especially in the G1, where Dallas saw Okada finally defeat Tanahashi within the 30 minute limit of the tournament for the very first time.

Can he do the same to kick off his 2021 campaign? Certainly Okada has the drive to do so, and seven years removed from his last G1 Climax victory, wants to get his tenth tournament campaign off to the hottest start possible. Yet the Ace is riding the biggest wave of momentum he’s experienced for years. In fine physical form, and with a momentum and morale boosting string of main event performances over the summer under his belt, Tanahashi is a tough prospect to beat, and his record 150th G1 tournament match could well convert to his 87th victory.
G1_20210919_05.jpg

Hirooki Goto (0-0) vs Taichi (0-0)
Singles record: 3-2 Goto, G1 record: 1-0 Taichi

Taichi starts his 2021 G1 campaign with a desire to follow up on his 2019 victory over Hirooki Goto, and in so doing erase painful memories of his New Japan Cup loss earlier this year. Goto and Taichi will both be using the tournament as a means to remind the world of how dangerous they are as singles competitors after having their hands full in tag and 6 man staes, with their paths crossing in exactly those environments in recent months.

Indeed it was Goto’s partner YOSHI-HASHI who Taichi pinned at MetLife Dome on September 5 to retain the IWGP Tag Team Championships, sneaking a victory in the three way rules just weeks after Goto promised to ‘shut the lights off’ on Dangerous Tekkers. It’s safe to say that Goto will carry some ill will toward Taichi in this bout, and having won the opening bout in five of his last six G1 entries, will have be taking this bout with the Holy Emperor extremely seriously as a key part of returning to the successes of his 2008 debut year. Will the G in G1 stand for ‘Goto’, or will a Dangerous Defeat await?
G1_20210919_04.jpg

4th Match: SANADA (0-0) vs Tama Tonga (0-0)
Singles record: 2-1 Tonga

Tama Tonga returns to G1 competition for the first time in three years, and does so against a familiar opponent in SANADA. In every G1 both men have participated in, they’ve been in the same block, and with a 2-1 record in Tonga’s favour with wins in 2016 and 2017. Indeed, with SANADA being a multiple time IWGP Tag Team Champion to boot, he’s one of the competitors with whom Tama is most familiar, but after a significant period away from singles competition, will he be able to rejoin the tournament of tournaments with a win?
G1_20210919_03.jpg

3rd Match: Jeff Cobb (0-0) vs Chase Owens (0-0)
Singles record: 1-0 Cobb

After seven years in NJPW competition, Chase Owens has his first match in the tournament of tournaments against one of, if not the toughest competitor in B Block. Cobb certainly represents a huge opportunity for Owens to instantly prove that he belongs among the top twenty heavyweights, but it will be a hard road to climb for the Crown Jewel to overcome a Cobb hungrier and more highly motivated than at any other point in his career.

It’s almost unfair to compare the United Empire’s Jeff Cobb to the man who competed to eight points in the last two years, both with opening match losses. A changed man since last winter, Cobb has taken his natural gifts of physicality and athleticism, and combined them with results, and big time results. The Imperial Unit could be impossible deny this G1, and Osaka should set the pace for the Imperial Unit.
G1_20210919_02.jpg

2nd Match: YOSHI-HASHI (0-0) vs EVIL (0-0)
Singles record: 3-1 EVIL G1 record: 2-1 EVIL

B Block G1 action this year will kick off with EVIL taking on YOSHI-HASHI. Now at the head of BULLET CLUB’s HOUSE OF TORTURE, EVIL is determined to establish the sub-unit within BULLET CLUB and his place within it, as well as to erase memories of September 5’s failed challenge to Shingo Takagi at the MetLife Dome. Last year, YOSHI-HASHI’s drive and heart saw him come as close as one could get to defeating the King of Darkness, but with Dick Togo’s presence proving the difference maker, ultimately fell. Could the Headhunter start his G1 by upsetting one of 2021’s favourites?
G1_20210919_01.jpg

1st Match: Kosei Fujita vs SHO
After Ryohei Oiwa gets pitted against SHO on night one, night two of the tournament sees Kosei Fujita tested against the new BULLET CLUB member. It’s rare indeed for a new Young Lion to be so quickly pitted opposite established names only four matches into their career in the same way that Fujita and Oiwa are during this tour. Can Fujita survive long enough against SHO to leave an impression?

Watching Day 1 right now Sabre JR and Naito are on the ground trying to put each other in Submissions but what did I see with Yano/Kenta? Thank goodness we got through those type of Matches early on rather than them trying to kill me off with that Match later in the tourney. Funny indeed but I rather of wanted to see the Yano who deleted Owens recently rather than goofy Yano. As for Loa/O-Khan I actually liked that Match more than I thought I would. Loa to be really dominated and it took a few surprises from O-Khan to get that victory. If Loa is giving you problems though you're dead meat vs guys like Ishii and Shingo.

- Khan vs. Loa was better match, although Loa actually impressed me more. Tanga has a lot of potential as a singles competitor, and looks strong on his own. Enjoyed that match, but a good win for the UE!

I'm about to watch Day 2 in a few moments but man that Shingo/Ishii War was awesome to watch. The Closeline Shingo gave Ishii felt like a Bomb went off it was that great.

20210918_G1_%E6%98%9F%E5%8F%96%E8%A1%A8_EN_A_OL.png

A Block competition in G1 Climax 31 started with some shocking results and some incredible matchups. On September 23, the tournament rolls on to Ota as some look to build on night one success, and some look to get on the board.

G1_20210923_05.jpg

Main event: Shingo Takagi (1-0) vs Zack Sabre Jr. (1-0)
Singles record: 1-0 Takagi

For the first time in a New Japan ring, Shingo Takagi meets Zack Sabre Jr. in our main event. Indeed, to many with shorter or less particular memories, this seems like a first time ever matchup, but Shingo and Zack’s memories are long and detailed. Both clearly remember a WxW 16 Carat meeting in 2009, a match that Takagi was not only victorious in, but victorious via submission, going on to win the tournament and achieve a feat that ZSJ took another seven years to claim.

Sabre has carried memories of that loss for over a decade, and now comes to meet Shingo in Ota determined to right that perceived wrong. He does so with a great deal of confidence; his own tournament campaign started with a convincing tapout win, utilizing ‘Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home’ to tie Tetsuya Naito in knots, drawing the submission and creating doubt over Naito’s knees as the tournament progresses. Takagi can come into Ota confident as well, with an opening match win over Tomohiro Ishii and his eighth consecutive singles victory. This match will be a good deal more of a technical affair than Tomohiro Ishii however. Will Takagi maintain his straight ahead smash mouth style? Or might he look to submit Sabre for the second time, 12 years apart?

G1_20210923_04.jpg

4th Match: Kota Ibushi (0-1) vs Tomohiro Ishii (0-1)
Singles record: 3-1 Ibushi G1 record 3-0 Ibushi

Rallying from a first night loss will be Kota Ibushi and Tomohiro Ishii in the semi main event. While Ishii’s loss to Shingo Takagi was in a pick ’em of a contest, very few predicted that Ibushi would be taking an L in his first match out at the hands of Yujiro Takahashi. Ibushi’s loss far from means the end of his campaign; he tasted defeat at the hands of KENTA in his first match in 2019 and went on to win the tournament, but it may have rattled Ibushi’s confidence, and a rattled opponent is something that Ishii can take full and easy advantage of.

Ibushi has had a clear edge over Ishii ever since going heavyweight; his only defeat to the Stone Pitbull coming when he challenged the then NEVER Openweight Champion as a junior back in 2014. Can the Golden God extend his three match winning streak over the CHAOS member tonight? Or will he be further behind the eight ball with a second loss?

G1_20210923_03.jpg

3rd Match: Tetsuya Naito (0-1) vs Tanga Loa (0-1)
Tetsuya Naito and Tanga Loa head into their second matches also needing a win. With relatively little singles experience, Loa has been effectively inserted into the group of death during thsi G1 in terms of the top flight singles wrestlers he has to compete with. Naito is near the top of that list on any normal day, but the question tonight is whether it will be a normal day. After relentless assaults on the knees and neck of his foe, Zack Sabre Jr. submitted Naito in Osaka on September 18, leaving Naito the focus of deep concern, unable to find his feet after the match and with his knees in particular seeming to cause extreme pain. After Loa managed to dictate the pace so effectively against Great-O-Khan before his ultimate defeat on the tour opener, there is an opportunity for the Silverback here, providing his confidence and trash talking ability doesn’t get the better of him. The biggest singles victory in Loa’s 12 years as a pro could put Naito in trouble two matches deep into the G1 marathon.

G1_20210923_02.jpg

2nd Match: KENTA (0-1) vs Yujiro Takahashi (1-0)
The G1’s first BULLET CLUB derby will see KENTA go up against a highly confident Yujiro Takahashi. Both KENTA and Yujiro can lay a rare claim to a special achievement; that of defeating Kota Ibushi in the opening match of the G1 Climax. Yujiro’s usage of new move Big Juice to polish off the back to back winner started G1 Climax 31 with a huge shocking upset, and instantly earmarked him as a threat in this tournament. With neither man a stranger to rule bending though, some intriguing questions circle this bout.

While it seems on the surface as if HOUSE OF TORTURE has been accepted by BULLET CLUB at large as an established sub-team, will there be any factional friction? This match might set the tone for future BULLET CLUB interactions throughout the series.

G1_20210923_01.jpg

1st Match: Toru Yano (1-0) vs Great-O-Khan (1-0)
Singles record: 1-0 Yano

Starting off the evening, Great-O-Khan and Toru Yano both battle to be the first to get to four points. As proud a man as the Dominator is, Great-O-Khan has never, in either tag or singles interactions, beaten Yano. In fact, Yano has not only defeated, but belittled O-Khan on grand stages. Their New Japan Cup encounter that saw O-Khan tied to the guardrails via his own hair, necessitating an emergency shearing, while four months later in Hokkaido, O-Khan found himself handcuffed to the ring frame for a countout loss. It isn’t just two points, but revenge on the mind for O-Khan tonight, while Yano will want to show he has the Dominator’s number.

ZSJ vs. Naito - was an incredible match, really technical, fluid and clean. Already set a really high bar for the rest of the G1
