Ok, had to look up. Iceland was discovered first and the name came from their early language for "island" basically. Eric the Red wanted to rule Greenland and so he named it such to encourage settlers to come to the country. So I was half right I guess.Considering the names are relics of the time Vikings inhabited them I doubt that is the reason they have those names.
