This. Be a fan of the business. Not of yourself.Lol, Madusa sounds like the female Kevin Nash.
Actually pretty cool to see people not forgetting to be fans while in the wrestling business. Would certainly pick a different way to show it though.
Madusa would own AJ. Also AJ's tattoo is pathetic
I'm not a fan of how AJ's tattoo looks, but it's something that's meaningful and important to her. She appears to be a big fan of the industry and has a big appreciation for the opportunities she's been given so far in her career. Madusa just looks petty with her comments and I don't see what the big deal is over AJ taking photos with the old Women's Championship belt. It just looks like an excuse to complain and get attention.
She's getting flack for being a mark for herself, not the business. There's no unwritten rule about not getting tattoos to celebrate a milestone. All of Edge's tattoos were milestones in his career. But you don't get one that is outright "this is what I have done" because it is considered bad form among wrestlers. To hanker back to Edge, all his tattoos are milestones (IC title, Main event status, world champ, wwe champ and so forth.) But none of them outright point out what they represent to him. Same with a couple of Punk's tattoos. Probably the Undertaker's tattoos as well.I'm not a fan of how AJ's tattoo looks, but it's something that's meaningful and important to her. I can understand why AJ got the tattoo. But she's been in the business long enough to
know that these kind of rules exist.
It really is surprising to have an unwritten rule about "not being a mark for yourself" in the same business that gave us guys like Michaels and Hogan. Guess times really have changed.
Wrestling locker rooms are full of rules. Wrestling is in essence a carnival culture. A little world within itself with its own set of rules and laws. And one of the biggest rules is "don't be a fan of yourself", its perfectly fine to have a big of an ego and to see your own value, but you don't make yourself out to be something you aren't. And getting a tattoo directly commemorating your accomplishments is seen as self marking. You're supposed to be a fan of the business you work in, not yourself. As I said in a previous post, she could get a tattoo to celebrate, but she should have made it something that doesn't obviously scream "I GOT A FAKE BELT IN A FAKE SPORT". It could have been a spider, a star, anything else. The tattoo wouldn't loose any meaning for her since she would know why she got it. Edge for example got stars on his arm when he was made into a main event player. How is it a rule? What is the big deal? If it was a rule that she couldn't get a tattoo like that, why would WWE.com write an entire article/interview with AJ about it?
Those rules already existed back then. And Shawn got tons of flack for being a self mark. Same with Hogan but Vince saw enough money in him to not care what the locker room thinks. It really is surprising to have an unwritten rule about "not being a mark for yourself" in the same business that gave us guys like Michaels and Hogan.
