It's a good thread imo. I always ponder what the future can hold. We could see cities turn into this:

Or overpopulation, lack of renewable energy sources, a dead economy, and inevitable corruption could lead to a much more troubled world than one we already live in.

Nice picture; reminds me of an World Con ::sigh::

We could have encountered alien life; life that can communicate and perhaps help the human race?

Why would an intelligent species decide to help us? Seriously we're a planet of people who hunt and kill for enjoyment. Would you empower a person who'd kill you for the fun of it? What justification is there for the risk? This is obviously assuming basic psychology of the "aliens" is to survive and reproduce. I suppose they'd attempt to show their culture on ours but wouldn't that make us less Human and more of a sub alien kind of thing? If they're so advanced what could we offer them?

I'm an ignorant person who dismisses aliens off hand due to being ignorant but still I never understood this hope they'd interact with us.

The big trouble with Interstellar aliens, is that if they have the power of interstellar travel, they might not even *want* to interact with us; they may even want to get rid of the Earth for their 'highwway,<g.>' Ala 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.'

You're attempting to add logic to the hypothetical scenario of extraterrestrial life engaging with the human race on an intelligent communicational level; please stop that. However, for the sake of debate, why do people insist on focusing on the negatives with the human race? For all our flaws there are plenty of positives. We are a rapidly growing intellectual species which could have a ton of potential in this hypothetical space world. These "aliens" could be more intelligent, but not more powerful. Perhaps we could even exploit their intelligence for resources THEY may require? Who knows. In hypothetical scenarios like this it's pretty hard to debate WHY this hypothetical species would help or communicate with us.

So true, if nothing else it's arrogant. Oh if there's an intelligent being they'll want to get in with us, it's a scientific extension of religion in an odd way. The higher power will save us in the end yet one is ridiculed and the other is held in high hopes. The worst thing is they're usually interchangeable.

No logic needs to happen, surely we could just get fantasy without limits then? If we have been able to acquire these resources why couldn't the other species with their higher intellect? Unless it's something specifically on earth then I'd be concerned. I doubt a greater intellect would struggle with the concept of requiring to defend themselves it's instinct for any successful species to survive and reproduce isn't it? How have they survived as a species to gain this intellect? There are too many issues for me to think of a reason why they'd do it.

Environmental factors? Just because they can travel through space, doesn't mean they can necessarily acquire the natural resources they specifically require.

It's instinct for us... on this planet... Who knows what the fuck is instinct for this other being? We cannot humanise everything brother. They could be like us and think they're alone, but they're say 100 years more advanced in technology where travelling through space quickly and efficiently isn't a problem any more. Why are us humans searching for other life? I'll tell you (the main answer anyway) - curiosity. They could be the exact same.

Them placing value on our planets resources is scary if you ask me (if it has a use it has a value.)

There will be good in this species like there is in ours but sadly the opposite will exist, your willing explorers will be there and my murderous cronies will too. If there is a source of something which has value surely the negative of the species will be attracted to it too, unless we're not worth their time? If we aren't worth their time when they're the lowest of the low then the item can't be that important to them so why bother engaging with us? Valuable has issues. Plus Murphy's Law is probably at play.

If they're doing it simply for their own curiosity and there is no return for them beside knowledge it makes a sense. They get knowledge of us, we get the knowledge they offer and everyone is happy? It's the perfect relationship. Seems very much a eutopian relationship but logical. Who gets the knowledge also? The entire planet. countries representatives or a select few? Do you trust humanity with that? Look at how much destruction we've made with our own discoveries. Say they give us a cure to cancer, what stops that being used for political leverage?

We're talking extremes you're positive and I'm negative so neither of us can or will be correct (there is always a shade of grey altering the black and white slightly) which is my main issue with these subjects, there are no limits to discussions so anyone can claim anything will happen and it's got to be considered plausible. Hell if we use the multiple universe theory we are both right also we didn't have this discussion which I'm sure made you sad.

I actually see humanity hitting a technological wall. I don't think we, as a species, can sustain our current level of technological growth and I expect the world of 2063 - 2088 to be far more like the world of 2013 than the world of 2013 is like the world of 1963.
