Favorite Old School Video Game?

How old is old school?

I loved Doom and Wolfenstein 3D when I was a kid. Also Crystal Caves and Secret Agent!! I loved DOS games.

I like games. Before I had kids I used to play them a lot. Now, not so much. My favourites:

1. Rygar. Played this on a caravan park in Wales several times a year from the age of about 8 - 14 but never knew what it was because it was the Japanese version. Found it years later on MAME and still think it's awesome.



2. Bubble Bobble. Never played an arcade cab but have it on every system I've owned that it's been available on (I go back to the Amstrad CPC 464 and C64, so it's a fair few versions). Another one that doesn't age.



3. Super Mario World. The best 2d Mario. Which makes it one of the best games of all time I think.



4. Zombies (Ate My Neighbours). I've never seen anything with this type of fun, B-Movie atmosphere since. A pure joy to play.



Of course there's lots of others, LOZ Orcarina of Time, R-Type, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 2, StreetFighter 2, Super Mario Kart, Tetris, Devil Crash, Micro Machines 2, Speedball 2, any Castlevania (Rondo of Blood is awesome, only played via emulation though. Would love a PC Engine)...

Nicely written and very thorough @Char Aznable

I'm curious what you'd make of the arcade version of Rygar - obviously I've got the rose tinted glasses for it but I still think it's very well made - I did a brief review of it [here] when I was toying with making a retro review blog (made all of three posts on it nine years ago!). I didn't mention in that though the power-up scheme which I still think is one of the best I've seen in a game in terms of the power-ups being logical: make the diskarmour longer, make it more powerful, allow you to kill enemies by jumping on their heads, direct the diskarmour straight above you and a shield.

Anyway, like I say, curious what you'd make of it.

To be succinct on Rygar, it's a fine game, nothing special considering what else what else came out during the time period, but it has its moments of fun.

Well, when I first made this thread I was like anything before the 2000s...but maybe we can include a few games from like....2005 on backwards. So anything from 2000-2005 and anything before that I guess... lol

Pre-whatever generation the PS3/360 was is considered old-school now I think.

Regarding is said to be where grinding began. Which is funny because this is the game where I learned that its an important part for dominance. Now everyone can do the who "pay for play" and progress in games. I'm not a fan of it, but I have done it a few times. I could rant on about that forever. He'll, I may start a new .thread on the subjects later.
