Sambo is in its basis a pure military style, developed as close quarter form for Soviet soldiers/spec ops. So yeah it is pretty darn brutal when utilized proper.

But the only guys I know in MMA who do it is Fedor and Andrei Arnovsky

Passed out early last night, just watched the match - Diaz just landing blow after blow. 33 critical strikes? Gotta give the other guy his credit, he took some serious abuse and didnt collapse until after it was all said and done. Good call on the part of the ref to end it when he did.
