Continuing this world building narrative we have seen so far as part of this DC Extended Universe's rebirth. This time we wouldn't go to another planet but instead we would go to an island and meet an entire new race of people. The location of this island would be Themyscira which to it's natives was also referred to as paradise Island. Reminiscent of ancient Greece with their attire and weaponry. Themyscira was a perfect society of Amazons built on peace, equality and tolerance. The Amazons were all goddesses equipped with strength, beauty, wisdom and love. The founders of Themyscira would be Queen Hippolyta (Kate Winslet) and her sister Antiope (Laurie Holden).
The elder sister of the pair it was Hippolyta who served as the queen and ruler of Themyscira. Antiope meanwhile would act as a combat instructor for the Amazons and would prove herself to be an exceptional Hunter. Leading the Amazonian army would be General Philipus (Naomi Campbell). While at times Hippolyta and her sister would come into conflict with one another. Philipus' loyalty and servitude was never in question. Along with being the leader of the Amazon military Philipus was the head of the royal guard and was also Hippolyta's lover. Together the pair would raise the queen's daughter Diana. It would be with Diana we'd see more tension arise between Hippolyta and Antiope. This was down to Hippolyta wishing to shield Diana from the evils of the man world and the outside of their island. While Antiope instead wished to school Diana just like any other Amazon.
This is why Antiope would begin to train Diana in secret with Diana proving herself to be an exceptional warrior. Yet on learning of this training the queen was far from happy. Yet she would soon listen to reason when Philipus would compliment Diana's abilities. Expressing her pride at Diana's work, Hippolyta would allow Diana to train with the rest of the Amazons. Here Diana would make a close friend Mala (Tracy Spiridakos). A caring individual who sought to help others better themselves. Mala was the perfect friend for Diana and would act at points as her personal sounding board. She'd also be a great source of inspiration when Diana began to doubt herself. This would be especially caused by Diana's rival Orana (Rose Leslie). Orana was highly dismissive of Diana believing her to have only gotten this far because of her lineage.
Wanting to tell Diana the truth of her lineage, Antiope would quickly be silenced by Hippolyta who swore her to secrecy for when Diana was ready. Until that time we'd see one other rival for Diana appear this time one of Philipus' soldiers Artemis (Elodie Yung). Arguably one of the fiercest warriors that Themyscira had seen. Artemis was looked upon as a successor for Philipus and her rivalry with Diana was more about competition than personal distaste. Yet soon the Amazons would have a lot more on their plate than just a petty squabble as one day while her and Mala were exploring the island they would see a plane crash on it's outskirts. This plane would belong to fighter pilot Steve Trevor (Josh Duhamel) who was shot down in a fire fight. While to Diana this outsider would be a source of intrigue. To her mother Trevor's arrival was a threat to their island.
Visiting Steve in private Diana would be enamored as she sought to learn all about the man world. When Steve told her about all it's troubles and war, Diana wished to help but her plans and wishes were quickly shot down by her mother. Wishing for Trevor to go, Hippolyta even went as far as to speak with Philipus about an execution. Acting as a calmer presence of the two Philipus instead opted to use the lasso of truth on Trevor to see the truth and his intentions. It would be here Steve spoke of the war and his place in it. Showing himself to be a noble man and a warrior looking to fight for the good of his people. Philipus deemed him as someone they'd proudly have represent their army. With that Hippolyta would decree that one of their amazons would return Steve home and see the Man world for themselves before reporting back on this war.
To determine who would be this Champion and representative of the Amazons. Hippolyta would decree a series of challenges and games to whittle the field with the most worthy left standing. Wanting to see this world for herself Diana would elect to enter these games despite Hippolyta's wishes. Soon she'd show herself to be a worthy competitor before finally reaching the finals against her two rivals Orana and Artemis. Narrowly in this contest Diana would defeat her rivals and earn the respect of Artemis who proudly recognized her as their champion. Orana meanwhile would be further embittered by this defeat as she remarked there would be a time when she'd have her day. Despite not wanting this for Diana, Hippolyta would make sure that her daughter was well equipped for this mission as she procured her the lasso of truth, royal tiara, bracelets of victory and her trademark red, white and gold armor which was reminiscent of her New 52 attire.
With this equipment to aid her journey Diana would begin her journey to the Man World along with Steve Trevor. Flying in a plane for the very first time was an experience for Diana which continued to give this fish out of water and coming of age tale. The duo would bond further in this journey as Steve would tell her about his backstory and his role in the war. Shown to be a strong, noble human being who has grown quite jaded to fighting what he calls a never ending war. What would also be troubling to Diana in this conversation was Trevor's frank honesty about how women are perceived in his world. On her arrival to England, Diana would soon get a cold dose of this reality that women faced in the second world war.
However it wasn't all bad for Diana as she did quickly meet a kindred spirit of sorts for her. This would be Etta Candy (Orla Brady) who had overcome plenty of adversity herself to become a UK Intelligence officer. Shown to be a former pilot also, Etta was in many ways a warrior but you wouldn't tell that right away based off of her warm and friendly nature. It would be Candy who could see something was special about Diana and more than just Steve's chaperone. Thanks to a recommendation from both Steve and Candy, Diana would accept a job offer to work as the secretary for General Phil Darnell (Colin Firth). A strict by the book miliary man who commanded respect from his soldiers and colleagues alike. While Diana may have taken some convincing to take this position. It would be Steve who told her that this would allow her a chance to be on the inside.
One thing that didn't quite sit with Diana was the war itself. Struggling to understand it's purpose or just why it continued on for so long. Even Steve Trevor couldn't help provide her with much as he like many others by this point had grown jaded with fighting a seemingly never ending conflict. Along the way with her settling into the man's world Diana would make two more friends this time through Etta. The first of which would be single mother Jane Kapatellis (Jennifer Garner). A strong willed woman who had finally gotten sick of her pig of a husband. Diana also grew close with her daughter Vanessa Kapatellis (Atrid Berges-Frisby). Vanessa sadly had long been suffering with pain and disability after a car accident which robbed her of her dancing career. It could be quickly noted that while she liked Diana, there was some envy to be had from Vanessa to Diana.
Another individual who Diana would soon become associated with was businessman Maxwell Lord (Channing Tatum). An American Entrepreneur who seemingly was apart of a weapons manufacturing deal with the UK Military. Lord like many men was taken by Diana from the moment he met her. Max claimed he saw something special in her but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Darnell meanwhile was stuck in his ways as per the time regarding female soldiers. So when Steve Trevor and Etta Candy wished to go to Europe as per a secret source to locate some Nazi agents. They knew that Darnell wouldn't approve, one person however more willing to help them would be Maxwell Lord who actually had some contacts out there himself and also provided them with a plane capable of camouflage which was straight out of the Wonder Woman comics.
Yet no matter how friendly or charming he seemed there was something shady about Maxwell Lord. Something which in particular didn't sit right with either Steve Trevor or Etta Candy especially when his source was revealed to be Paula Von Gunther (Sophie Marceau). A war criminal and spy, Paula Von Gunther was definitely not someone that Steve Trevor was happy to be meeting with. In fact in the first moments of seeing her Steve would draw a gun on her. Etta Candy seemed to agree with Trevor that Paula was a threat. Despite her misgivings about Paula, Diana was at least willing to hear what Paula had to say before making her face justice. It must be said that with her being Maxwell Lord's contact, there was an added suspicion and unease on just exactly whether Maxwell Lord could be trusted.
We'd soon get to see Diana in the field for the first time however as Paula Von Gunther proved her intel to be valid. As not only did she reveal that the nazis were working on some special weapons to turn the tide back in their favor. But that they'd even brought in Doctor Poison (Rachel Weisz). A mysterious scientist who had gone to great lengths to conceal their identity. It was only through Paula Von Gunther that we'd learn that the doctor was in fact a female scientist by the name of Fausta Grables. Believed to be a wealthy heiress of a French family, Paula Von Gunther's information would lead them to a heavily guarded family home. Donning her armor for the first time Diana would storm right through the front door as she'd use her bracelets to deflect gunfire.
This distraction allowed Steve and Etta to find another entrance and they'd catch Doctor Poison off guard before apprehending her. Using her lasso for the first time to question Fausta. Diana would further be horrified at how this world perceived women with Fausta remarking that even with her knowledge and abilities. People wouldn't respect or recognize her as a woman which is why she concealed her identity. Revealing that she had a financier it would be hear that we'd hear the name of Thomas Byrde (Jesper Christensen). Commenting that Byrde isn't a believer in the cause and is simply looking to keep the war going. Diana would elect to go after him alone while Steve and Etta brought Doctor Poison home with them to face a jury for her war crimes. In her journey to find Bryde however Diana would finally begin to find a reason behind the war.
For when she'd confront him she'd find not a wealthy man hiding behind an army. But rather a curious third party with their own agenda. Seemingly waiting for Diana with open arms, Byrde would unveil himself as the Duke of Deception. Revealing himself to be the deity Dolos, the deity of deceit and lies. The Duke revealed himself to be a soldier of Ares. While not a trustworthy source by any means, The Duke stated that he had no intention or need to lie to Diana as it was too late for her to stop what's happening. Stating that Ares is always looking for more soldiers, it seemed the Duke enjoyed taunting Diana about her standing and how she was beneath them. This would only enrage Diana who attacked the duke and following a battle would use her sword to cut down the Duke for his crimes.
Returning home following this Diana would see that things had changed following this covert meeting. Despite being livid about this unauthorized mission Darnell was happy with the result and the capture of Poison. On top of that he couldn't help but be impressed with Diana and expressed willing to work alongside her. It wouldn't just be Darnell who was impressed with Diana either as Maxwell Lord wouldn't be able to contain his intrigue. His connection to Paula Von Gunther had set off some red flags yet as we'd learn thanks to her continued information Paula had been granted amnesty. This wouldn't sit well with either Steve Trevor or Etta Candy who refused to trust either Lord or Paula. Lord would seemingly continue to try and sway Diana. In the process however he'd meet Vanessa Kapatellis and on becoming aware of her condition, he'd offer her a chance to recover.
Aided by Paula as he'd begin experimentation on Vanessa, it'd soon become apparent that Lord's experimentation was down to him looking to create a man made version of wonder woman. The experimentation would see Vanessa injected with a ton of different compounds which would alter her both physically and mentally shattering her psyche. Transforming Vanessa into the ruthless killer Silver Swan, quickly we'd see however that Max couldn't control Swan just like he couldn't do the same with Diana. Swan would soon go off on a rampage leaving quite the body count as she hunted down Diana. Forced to fight against her own friend Diana tried to avoid this contest as best she could. Unfortunately on seeing that Vanessa had little issue with putting innocent lives at risk, Diana was forced to hold nothing back. Looking to make Vanessa see sense, Jane would enter the field in the hopes to reach her daughter.
Watching this battle from afar it soon become apparent that Swan wasn't a failed creation but more just a test by Maxwell Lord to see what Diana was truly capable of. Thanks to Jane's efforts they'd manage to reach through the broken Vanessa but during later conversations we'd learn that Vanessa had little memory of what happened to her. Aware of her crimes, Vanessa seemed willing to accept her punishment yet Darnell continuing to show his growth saw potential as a soldier and promised to help Vanessa as best he can. Slowly haunted by memories of what she did however Vanessa soon managed to remember Paula Von Gunther and her part in her transformation. Yet as they'd look to arrest Paula, we'd find that Paula had gone under ground and in what concerned Steve she'd took Doctor Poison's research with her.
While one might expect all of this to further put suspicion on Max Lord, we'd learn that Lord had developed quite the story and play to prove his innocence. However as we'd soon find Lord had some assistance in making such a bold play which while not enough to cast doubt from him. At least for now forced Diana and others to focus on the task at hand which was Diana's mission to stop the war by thwarting Ares and his plot. Yet with Diana's rash decision making to kill the Duke of Deception, we'd see that Ares (Daniel Craig) had made a bold move to take action. Consumed by his own rage and anger at the fall of his associate Ares had summoned all of his children and allies to come to him in an effort to rally them against the Amazon. This allowed us to further see a lot more of the dynamic of the group.
Known to have been one of the lesser liked and respected gods of Olympus Ares very much was someone who liked to rule with an iron fist. A leader who commanded fear as opposed to respect, Ares was a vicious, cold individual who one got the impression could snap at any moment. His children and allies would all be shown to be people that were intimidated by Ares and were manipulated by him to seek an approval or acceptance that they would never reach. The first children we'd meet would be brothers Deimos (Jacob Lofland) and Phobos (Oliver Stark). This pair of brothers who clearly were the youngest of Ares' children were shown to be rash as they rushed off as soon as Ares mentioned an Amazon in the hopes of garnering his approval. Ares' daughter Eris (Teresa Palmer) meanwhile had a lot more frostier relationship with her father and saw this as a chance to mend fences between her and her father.
Along with his children we'd meet some of Ares' associates including the Gorgon Medusa (Alexandra Daddario). Shown to be a loyal follower of Ares, Medusa would stop at nothing to appease her master as he ordered her to eliminate the threat and find him the island. It would seem in these interactions that Ares had a lot more time for his associates and the slightest respect in how he spoke to them in comparison to his children. Yet we'd see because of Ares' treatment, his children weren't to fully be trusted either. As we'd see Phobos put his true nature on display after he'd convince his brother Deimos straight into a fight with Diana. Deimos was quickly overmatched and we'd see him soon be cut down by Diana while Phobos fled in his mind taking a pawn off the board. This would allow Phobos to begin manipulating Eris regarding their brother's demise as Phobos proved himself to have the manipulative prowess of his father.
Of course not all of Ares' subjects truly seemed loyal with one noted being Gundra (Lily Rose Depp). A rogue Valkyrie who enjoyed the chaos of war, Gundra's alignment with Ares was strictly out of convenience and on seeing others with such potential she'd soon appear before Paula Von Gunther seeing her as a potential replacement should Ares fall. Offering her knowledge and wisdom to work alongside her, Gundra was delighted as Paula accepted this deal. Unbeknownst to them however we'd learn that Darnell wasn't going to let what Paula did stand. Thanks to intelligence provided by Max Lord, they'd have ideas for where to find Paula as Steve Trevor and Etta Candy prepped a mission to capture or kill Paula. Recognizing the threats that the world would face Diana agreed to stay behind in order to protect England and the world from Ares and his children.
Showing his coldness Ares had little interest in the news that his son was dead. Soon he'd learn that another of his children would be killed as Eris rashly attacked Diana. Consumed with rage over the loss of her brother Eris would similarly fall a similar fate as Diana bested her in battle while Phobos looked on. This time however Phobos seemingly had a play in mind more than just removing a pawn as he appeared before Max Lord believing that they had similar intentions and plans in mind and offered an alliance. One subject of Ares who watched everything from the shadows was that of Nubia (Nicole Beharie). While Ares claimed that Nubia was his daughter, Nubia had always had some doubts and in watching Diana and the way she thought Nubia would get flashes of memories regarding her life.
Revealed to be an Amazon herself Nubia as we'd learn was Diana's half sister and this revelation would cause Nubia to turn against Ares. Forgoing her prior mission, Nubia instead stepped into the field and helped Diana slay the predatory Medusa before removing the Gorgon's head. It would be then that Ares on seeing Nubia turn against him would elect to move into the field of battle himself. Before we got there however we'd get a cut to a shoot out taking place at the Von Gunther manor as Steve and his forces looked to capture Paula. During this battle we'd see Gundra shot and killed with her entry to Valhalla forfeit for the sins of her past. In the chaos Doctor Poison would manage to escape while Etta Candy defeated Paula in a short fist fight leading to her capture and rearrest.
As he appeared before Diana and Nubia it appeared that Ares had some familiarity or recognition of Diana. Disgusted at what she's become and even more angered by Nubia's betrayal, Ares would uncharacteristically grant them one chance at redemption in joining their side. Offering both of them the truth of their lineage Ares' manipulations would fall on deaf ears which caused the god to finally unleash his fury. A being of pure rage and viciousness Ares didn't just beat these Amazons but he berated them as he did so. Taunting them that they'd never understand or be worthy, Ares showed little hesitation in attacking Nubia despite raising her from a young age. However his arrogance and over confidence would soon be his downfall because this allowed Diana and Nubia to combine their efforts before using Medusa's head to turn Ares to stone.
With Ares defeated time would pass as London looked to rebuild and the news would all be about peace talks resuming between the two sides. Trapped in stone form Ares would be marked for transport by Diana who looked to bring him to Themyscira for safe keeping. Offering Nubia travel home with her, Nubia would refuse this offer for now as she had a mission she wanted to finish. Stating that the world is not safe with any of Ares' children still out there. Nubia made it clear that she wouldn't return until Phobos was
dead. Following this farewell with Nubia, Diana would share a farewell with her colleagues and friends. After Darnell would hand Diana a medal in thanks of her service, Diana would share an embrace with Etta Candy. But it would be with Steve she had the saddest goodbye as the pair would share a kiss finally as their relationship had been built through the whole film. As the film ended in a post credit scene tease for the sequel we'd see Maxwell Lord joined by Doctor Poison and Phobos, Here Lord would reveal that through Von Gunther he'd amassed quite the contact list and had reached out to some old friends for the next stage of the plan! |
