Production has begun on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Fox announces (via IGN). The studio is a couple weeks late with the announcement because we've already seen set photos of Andy Serkis, Keri Russell, et al back in April.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the movie stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Judy Greer. James Franco is not returning for the sequel, but one never knows...

The movie won't be in theaters until May 23, 2014, but below is the official synopsis of what the sequel will involve.

"A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species."

We know this fight won't favor the humans because not only do the apes match the humans' intelligence, they also have four opposable thumbs!

This movie should start the beginning of the Ape reign and where the original Planet of the Apes started. Sounds like a whole lot of fun.

It's too bad Rupert Wyatt isn't returning to direct this one, he did a stellar job with the last and if he makes a movie it guarantees a role for Bryan Cox. However, this one is being done by Matt Reeves, who did a bang up job on both Cloverfield and Let Me In, so I'm alright with the change. I guess my only concern is the writer, Mark Bomback, who has yet to come up with a script that I've liked.
