Donald Glover Will Spend Less Time on Community Next Season
Back in June, we told you that Donald Glover was looking to spend less time at Greendale and more time with Childish Gambino. Well, now it appears to really be happening: Vulture has learned that the actor's reps and Community producer Sony Pictures Television have worked out a new agreement that will see Glover appearing as Troy Barnes in just five of the show's upcoming thirteen episodes, according to sources familiar with the matter. The studio probably could have insisted on Glover committing to all thirteen half-hour episodes (or more, if NBC ordered them), but as often happens in Hollywood, both camps found a way to compromise. Glover will now be able to focus more on his music, while Sony will save some money since it won't have to pay Glover for every episode. (Of course, once and future showrunner Dan Harmon might find a way to spend that extra coin. Maybe a 3-D episode?) Reps for Sony and Glover couldn't immediately be reached for comment, while reps for Abed Nadir were doing all they could to keep the news from him.
Donald Glover Will Spend Less Time on Community -- Vulture

MY EMOTIONS!

Seriously though, this is awful news. 5 episodes is hardly anything to build a story around.

I think it's pretty selfish on Glover's part. This is clearly his biggest gig, and yet he still insists on taking time off to focus on his shitty music career? What would a few extra weeks of filming do to his schedule? 13 episodes is not a lot to ask for.

Expect more Abed, some time away from Troy will probably make him Evil again.

I was reading that yesterday :( I guess we get a episode with Abed looking for Troy's replacement with auditions at greendale.

Hopefully this leads to more Leonard TV time and more Jeff/Annie.

Well that sucks. I had expected it to be because of the sitcom that he is working on for NBC, not for his music career and I would have prefered it if that was the case. This is a bit ridiculous, why can't he tape the episodes and then work on his album in the downtime. Joel McHale does The Soup every single week whilst filming Community and he is fine with that heavy workload.

Going to be a weird season with no Pierce and barely any Troy.

He also still finds the time for movie roles too.

Exactly, he is a lot busier than Glover yet he finds time in his schedule. Unless Glover is actually touring as Childish Gambino during the time that Community is being filmed there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to work 13 episodes. It isn't like he needs to be around during the day to record a new album, that can be done any time of the day plus his Producer Ludwig Goransson is the composer for Community anyway.

Its a bummer for sure, Troy is probably my favourite character on the show especially with Abed. It should though create for some interesting moments with a Troy-less Abed. Cant really blame Donald for wanting to focus on his music, Community's as big as its ever going to be, Gambino still has room to grow. I dont mind his music either, maybe its just because of his work on the show because I cant really stand rap and its poser toughguys.

I like his music as well, I bought Camp and it is a quality album. I just don't think he needs to cut back so much on his community committments even if he is working on a new album. With this news, unless something major happens and Community suddenly doubles its audience, everything keeps pointing to this being the last season.

Sorry if this against the rules to bring back, but now that Community is on Netflix I figured we can talk about the show. I have watched random episodes, but now I'll watch in order from the beginning. Anyone excited it's on Netflix now?

Well it's been on Hulu this whole time but I am excited about it being on Netflix only because I think it widens the audience and also (and this is a big reach) it gives me hope that a movie might finally be made, if Netflix sees there's an audience for it.

I would say Community is at least top 5 for me. I love it. I think it's a totally brilliant show with the different concept episodes they do, and the humor is very subtle and full of references and callbacks, instead of just punchlines. And there's a great deal of emotion and commentary on life in there too. Great show.
