Kirk Cousins Named Cleveland Browns Starter

usatsi_8098305.jpg

The Cleveland Browns announced their intentions to name Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers this coming Sunday at 1:00 PM at Heinz Field. There had been some discussion regarding whether the Browns would intend to start 1st Round Draft Pick Johnny Manziel instead of Cousins. Still, it was likely informed by how each quarterback played in the pre-season and Cousins' experience beating out Manziel's raw athleticism. Coach/GM Scott Anderson in a press conference with media officials, when asked about the decision told reporters, "It came down to who we felt would be able to give the team the most success early in the season, and I felt that Kirk's steady hand and experience would serve well in helping guide Manziel's progress by watching him play and studying under him for now. When we traded for [Kirk], we were looking for experience as well as potential to help this team succeed, and that's exactly what we have now."

Kirk Cousins did not have as noticeable statistics in the Pre-Season, going 17/22 for 167 Yards; he also threw a lone interception in the Rams' pre-season game. Cousins ended pre-season with a 79.1 Quarterback Rating. Johnny Manziel's statistics, though larger in scale, were also muddied with a myriad of turnovers and poor decision-making. Manziel ended the pre-season going 83/129 for 997 Yards (which was first among quarterbacks in the pre-season). Manziel also threw for 4 passing touchdowns (and ran in 3 rushing touchdowns); his inexperience painfully showed as he also threw 10 interceptions (1st in the NFL) and fumbled the ball three times. Manziel ended the pre-season with a 65.9 Quarterback rating. With the tale of the take completed, one would be remiss to not understand why Cousins was considered the safer option over the young stud Manziel. Cousins will be set to take on his first test as a genuine starting quarterback as he goes up against a solid Pittsburgh Steelers team that went 8-8 last season.

Browns @ Steelers Preview

The Cleveland Browns will be facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 7th at 1 PM EST. The Steelers will be looking to start their season off strong after starting 0-4 last year. The Browns on the other hand will be looking to net their first kickoff win in 10 years, as well as their first road win over the Steelers in 11 years. Last year both teams failed to make the playoffs, though the Steelers went 8-8 while the Browns went 4-12. It must be noted that the Steelers will be missing five players to injury: RB Le'Veon Bell, OT Kelvin Beachum, DE Cameron Heyward, TE Heath Miller, and LB Ryan Shazier. The Cleveland Browns are not missing any players, thanks in major part to a new rehabilitation program and athletic trainer system enacted by General Manager/Head Coach Scott Anderson.

Alright everyone, so I have a bit of an update for anyone curious. I've decided to start the project over, but do all the steps I made in Preseason, so we're still arriving to the same stuff that's going on, so Week 1 against the Steelers will be happening sometime this Thursday night, edited and spliced with all the highlights! I've consequentially moved all stuff that happened after Week 4 of the Pre-Season to the dumpster.

Regular Season, Week 1, 2014 Season

Browns Hold Out, Beat Steelers 20-17

Pittsburgh, PA - The Cleveland Browns have achieved their first victory of the season, and their first season opening win since 2004. The Pittsburgh Steelers, heavy favorites against the Browns, gave up three turnovers in three consecutive drives in the first quarter, which put them in a bad position to kick things off. A slow offensive output by the Cleveland Browns would keep it a relatively close game until a Kirk Cousins touchdown pass to former Steeler Santonio Holmes in the 2nd Quarter would give Cleveland a 17-0 lead at halftime. The Steelers would almost come back though late in the 4th Quarter, scoring 17 2nd half points to get within three of the Browns. Alas, the Browns defense held on the the offense found enough footing to keep drives alive with several 3rd and 4th Down conversions. Browns Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, while throwing two interceptions on the day.

The Defense of the Browns was the main story, however, rushing at Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger for 2 Strip Sacks, and 2 Interceptions. The most notable play was the first fumble forced by Jabaal Sheard and recovered for a touchdown by Armonty Bryant. Additionally, Browns Kicker Billy Cundiff was perfect on the day, going 2-for-2 on field goal attempts and nailing both extra point tries.

Browns head coach Scott Anderson noted a different culture surrounding this team, with positive attitudes and discipline in the trenches being his biggest motivating factor for the win. He also praised Cousins' performance under center, citing that once he settled down after an underwhelming first quarter, he excelled in throwing the ball where it needed to go. When asked about Santonio Holmes scoring the lone offensive touchdown against his former team he said, "It's always a sense of sweet irony when you score on the team that you had been a part of for so long before. We're so happy to have him as a part of this team and I know he'll be a great contributor for as long as he's here." The Browns are 1-0 and are facing the Saints next week at home.
