Michael Ikoli is all smiles in December 2009 upon his release from jail after five years and his acquittal on murder charges...
A man who spent five years behind bars before being acquitted of murder was shot to death in the
Bronx, police said.
Michael Ikoli, 24, was sprung from jail after being cleared of killing a man outside a roller skating rink six years ago. The Daily News - in a 2009 report about the backlog of felony cases in the Bronx courts - revealed that he had been sitting in jail for five years awaiting trial.
After the story appeared, Ikoli's trial was put on the fast track and he was acquitted later that year.
Just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, he was shot four times at E. 188th St. and Webster Ave. He was rushed to
St. Barnabas Hospital where he died. No one has been arrested.
Police sources said Ikoli was a member of the Bloods street gang.
