WWE Trainer Monty "Billy Gunn" Sopp has been officially released by the company.
The Wrestling Observer website, which was the first to break the story, is reporting that Gunn was released after he tested positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs in a power-lifting competition.

PWInsider.com has independently confirmed that Gunn is no longer employed by WWE.

Gunn, a multi-time WWE Tag Team champion and former King of the Ring, was hired a trainer in 2012 and was one of the coaches on the most recent season of "Tough Enough."

What I'm not quite understanding here is how what he does in his life away from WWE has any bearing on his work with the company? I feel like there may be more to this story, such as him offering to supply the PED's to developmental talents. I just can't see them firing him for something that happened outside of their watch.

Well if the story got out, it was cause a massive negative media reaction. If one of their trainers is taking performance enhancing drugs, people are going to speculate that he is providing them to talents. It's far easier for the WWE to just get rid of him than face the media shitstorm.

I agree. Seems a little odd.

Doesn't seem odd to me. It's taking industry banned drugs, whether he's actually using them at work or not, whilst under WWE employment. Same if you got flagged during a random drug test at the office for smoking weed the night before at home.

Exactly what he said ^^^^^. If you're taking substances that are banned in WWE, it most certainly affects the company and it's public image. It doesn't matter where you were taking said substance, whether it was "at work" or during his off time. He should've known better.

I read that they are already planning on bringing him back as he was very popular with development.
