I was watching "Colors" the other night with Robert Duvall and Sean Penn as cops and thought it had to be one of the best cop movies ever made. Then I started to wonder what might be the actual "best" cop movie and better yet what's way up there for you guys. So let's hear it.

There's the obvious ones: Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon and of course Kindergarten Cop.

Then there's stuff like The Departed, Training Day, Assault on Precinct 13 (original and remake)

Then on the more detective side: The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, Zodiac, The Wicker Man, Mystic River, L.A. Confidental, Mr. Brooks, Heat, The Untouchables, In the Heat of the Night, Surveillance, Out of Sight, Narc

And a couple newer ones I really liked where The Guard and End of Watch and Prisoners from last year. Oh and 21 Jump Street was fun, of course.

Yeah... didn't realize how many great cop movies there were that I really like. :p Although some might not be typical cop movies, but they're all in that filter on a site I use.

Police Academy is my favorite police movie ever. Truth be told it was the reason I chose to go into the Law Enforcement field. I first saw the movie as a child and thought the movies were hilarious. The scene where Hightower flips over the car during training was awesome!

Also all of the Dirty Harry movies were great. Especially Magnum Force. The Rookie with Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen was another excellent Eastwood movie.

There's your answer. I'm also partial to Eastwood's "Tightrope", which is a pretty big departure for him character-wise. Other good cop movies I'd recommend on the serious side would be Cop, Heat, Infernal Affairs (and Infernal Affairs II), Outland (cop in space still counts), To Live and Die in LA and Manhunter.
