I was recently reading a Big Issue interview with Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and he said something that's stuck with me since;

"We have lost sight of things. We live in a world where it is just annulments and pre-nups and everything is immediately changeable, including your partner for life - the vows and words don't mean anything anymore.

People aren't as good as their words or handshakes. They kind of just slipped into it, just being about immediate gratification. Sorry, this isnt to spit in the face of people who do live their lives by principles, there are shitloads that do".

Are we as a people really becoming more focused on personal satisfaction and less focused on being a decent person?

I believe so. Just look at watch we indulge ourselves in daily with television shows and movies. They all portray something that some look at and say I wish I had that. Even look at the politics side of things they all want to smear their opponents so bad that they can not recover instead of dealing with the issues for the country they represent.

Look at all the "famous" people that we can not seem to get enough of and look at them and their lives. Whether its a football player, golfer, or a movie star. We try to emulate them in our lives a culture.

Even the music that is out there discusses the same sort of things, because now if you don't do things for you its not right or if you want that girl/guy go get them and hit it.

it all depends on how you were brought up. I personally above all else am myself. I don't try to portray something or someone I'm not, what you see is what you get. If your my friend, we are tighter than tight... if your someone I don't like, you'll know it; because I am a dick, an asshole, a douchbag, a jerk any other likeness you can think of. So it's hard being my "friend" but when I am you know that when I say mean shit to you, it's mostly out of a joke because I like fucking with people.

I'm getting married in 2 weeks today, and I don't have a doubt in my mind that my vows will be a life long decision. Most of society now do things out of what they see on TV and what what the famous people do. I personally couldn't give more of a fuck what they do, I'm me and that's the principle I live by.
