Actually the purpose is to still donate some money while taking the challenge, just not $100; because not everyone has $100.

It's done to raise awareness for a disease rarely in he spotlight and to earn money to try and find a cure for a disease currently incurable.

The ice water is supposed to mimick the feeling an ALS sufferer faces everyday.. as it makes your nerves fire and your muscles seize temporarily.

It's has raised over 23 million in the last month and continues to grow... making the "wasted water" well worth it.

Donations are now at 41.8 million compared to last year in the same time period.. 2.1 million.

This is becoming quite the fad across social media. Although it's a nice way to raise awareness, hopefully a good number of the participants are also donating money since it is a worthy cause. From my understanding, you only have to donate if you don't accept the challenge.

Either way, I wish other fatal cancers got this kind of support from the social media community because if it did a lot of good could be done in the world.
