Mick Malthouse was announced as Carlton coach today. Funny how they were all denying it weeks back but suddenly one week after Carlton's season finishes he is announced as coach. He is joining them at the right time as it should only take a few tweaks for him to get them challenging deep into the finals. He has signed for three years and by the end of that stint if Carlton aren't top four and winning finals then something has gone seriously wrong.

Lot of angry Carlton supporters on my facebook about Malthouse coaching them.

Goddard rumored to Essendon as well, Dal Santo rumored to leave St Kilda.

Why are the Carlton fans mad? Malthouse is a premiership coach with two teams. Are they annoyed at the process that had him appointed?

Goddard leaving I expect but I am a bit surprised that Dal Santo may leave. Saints are going to struggle the next few years as their stars get older and as their best players leave.

Brett Ratten is looking to go after the Port job and I think that he would be a good fit for them.

I think it's because Carlton hates Collingwood so much... Rivalry.

Essendon looking to grab a few players in this free agency.

Josh Caddy is also wanting to come home, Geelong is very interested.

Fair enough, it is a pretty big switch to make from one powerhouse to another.

Josh Caddy tried to get traded to Essendon last year so I am sure they will be front runners to grab him. Going to be an interesting trade period this year with free agency.

Essendon have stated they cannot get him unless they use him for a Round Two Draft as Round One Draft is already locked for Joe Daniher.

It should be interesting, I hope Bulldogs make a move and get someone like Dal Santo.

I didn't realise Essendon were activating a Father Son pick this year.

Bulldogs should go after a key forward, after Barry Hall left there aren't many options up forward for the Dogs. You would have a decent amount of room in the salary cap as well to lure in a recruit.

After Callan Ward, yes.

Cameron Ling and Simon Black have knocked back the Assistant Coach role for Carlton.

Glen Jakovich is rumored to be the assistant coach for Carlton

[h=6]The AFL have announced that Hawthorn will play either Adelaide or Fremantle in a twilight game Saturday fortnight at 5.15pm.

The winner of Sydney vs Collingwood or West Coast will play on Friday night due to ANZ stadium being unavailable Saturday night due to the rugby.[/h]

I thought that Ling was going to move into coaching this year, might be waiting to hear from another team. Black is playing for Brisbane next year so no surprise he knocked it back.

Odd that they are doing a twilight match, must be so that the interstate team can get to the airport that night and fly home at a decent time.

Surprised they didn't just move the game to SCG really.

In other news;

[h=6]Newly appointed Carlton coach has said that his first priority as coach is to pursue Travis Cloke to come to Carlton.

Carlton would need to compete with Fremantle's offer of $1.2mil on a 5 year deal to compete with the Perth based club.

It's understood that Cloke is keen to stay with Collingwood.[/h]

A PHONE call between John McCarthy and his girlfriend Dani in the hours before his death may hold the key to the mystery surrounding the Port Adelaide player's fatal fall in Las Vegas.

The football club has confirmed the phone call occurred but was reluctant to elaborate.

"We are aware a call was made but we will not speculate or comment further about that conversation while so much is unknown," Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas said in a statement on Tuesday.

In other developments:

  • McCarthy's uncle John Olle will make the first public comments from the late footballer's family later on Tuesday.
  • Collingwood will wear black armbands in Saturday night's semi-final against West Coast.
  • The AFL Players Association MVP awards will honour McCarthy at tonight's MVP awards.
  • Port Adelaide has been inundated with tributes, with more than 1500 messages posted on the club's website.
  • There will be a minute's silence before this weekend's two semi-finals.

Quite interesting he made a phone call just hours before his death, I suppose more will be said once they find out and fully investigate on what really happened.

Really strange, there were some reports that he said he wanted to come home. They are also now saying that he fell from the roof of the hotel and not a balcony. There is meant to be video footage from the hotel plus witnesses that were on the ground when it happened.

Yeah news said that as well but they won't reveal what the conversation was actually about. Still quite a sad story.

It is very sad but Port have handled it very well. They have plenty of reporters trying to get the inside scoop but they keep telling them to leave that for another day. For now we remember John McCarthy and we will worry about the other stuff later.
