On the things you just mentioned, I could see how it would be easy for people not to like him. A lot of fans are put off by the smark bait stuff (understandably I'd say). And honestly I have my problems with the finish but I will put them aside a bit because it was a ballsy move any way you look at it.

The irony is he beat a potential main eventer who could have used another big win to move him up the ladder, using a move that he himself took the brunt of the damage on.

Anyways I'm not really opposed to the smarky or fourth wall kinda breaking stuff myself, especially when it serves a purpose and makes sense, like when MJF was making callbacks to Cena and HHH last week against Punk.
