(USA TODAY) -- A 99-year-old Italian man is divorcing his wife of 77 years after finding a packet of old love letters that revealed an affair she had in the 1940s, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The British newspaper's Rome correspondent says newly released court documents show that the man, identified only as Antonio C., found the musty letters while clearing out an old chest of drawers a few days before Christmas.

His wife, Rosa C., reportedly confessed to the affair when confronted, but couldn't talk her husband out of filing for divorce.

The couple met during the 1930s when Antonio was posted as a young Carabinieri officer to Naples.

The newspaper says the couple have five children, a dozen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Found this on the water cooler section of my local news(but it's not a local story) It's kinda a sad story if you ask me they was married for a long time and the guy's 99 years old so he's pretty much now alone until he dies. When you're that old and been married that long I don't know if I'd leave my wife if I found she cheated many years ago I'd probably just look past it and thank for the many great years she's given me.

I have pretty much the same sentiments as you. I mean he's 99-yrs-old for crying out loud, what is the point in separating now?

Exactly it's like they met in the 30's and this happened in the 40's he's just now finding out so that means only a little part that's about 10 or less years of that 77 years were bad. giving at the most 66 good years on top of the fact he's 99 years old. At this point I'd say okay cool it was forever ago and we've had a happy marriage just stay together cause I'll likely be dead soon anyway.

I also think the fact the guy's 99 and both him and his wife are still alive as usually one of them dies before either can get that old so kudos to them for there good health and hopefully he changes his mind on this and sticks with her.

He's Italian, they are very passionate people and sometimes cannot forgive something like this.

You should thank Italians for that passion actually. As the old saying goes, the Greeks invented sex but it was the Italians that added women.

So Greeks were gay and it's Italians who we thank that we're all not gay? Okay then I guess they are not as bad as I thought they were then

If he can really never forgive her what she did 70 years ago then I guess it's fine for him to divorce her, it lets him die happy at least. Maybe he can go out on the town one last time as a single man?

After reading the responses in the thread I know I’m going to be in the minority here. OK, I can not say I blame the man for filing for divorce after finding out his wife had another lover. It doesn’t matter if it was over 60 years ago, the fact remains they were together over ten years when she had the affair. Not only that, the lady kept the love letters, so there must have still been some emotional attachment between the two. I also wonder if any of their five children may have been fathered by the other man also. You know that is probably going through the man’s mind.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. I don't blame the guy at all for doing what he is doing.
