NOTES: The defending champion Dodgers are off to a roaring start in defense of the title.

Pittsburgh is off to a hot start.

In the AL, Boston has come firing out of the box and is off to a hot start with the Orioles hot on their tail.

The Yankees are off to a sluggish start.

Kansas City has bolted out to the early lead in the tight AL West.

The Twins are playing good ball to start the season and the White Sox and Rangers are also in the mix. Four teams are separated by just two games in the AL West.

EARLY SURPRISES:

In the NL, the Padres and Braves surprisingly sit in second and third in the West and both have winning records.

In the NL East, the Expos are playing above .500 and are just three back of the Bucs.

Philadelphia is also in the mix just 3-1/2 games behind their in-state rivals.

The top four teams in the East, including the Cubs, are just separated by just five games.

The Reds continue to reel after last year's losing season. Pitching, especially the bullpen, has been their achilles heel. No one expected them to be this bad.

In the AL, the Twins are just a game out of first in the West. Will they be able to maintain their current level of play?

Oakland is playing better than expected in the West and is just 4-1/2 games back.

ANGELS ARE WINNING...BUT STILL AN ENIGMA

1682460709867.png

By 'Iceman' Richard Kuklinski
Orange County Register Sports Writer/Hitman

So, the Angels are now just two games under .500.

The Angels looked like the bottom had fallen out of their season when they fell to 15-25 after 40 games. But since then, they've gone 12-4.

Sure, they're beating up on the Indians, Blue Jays and Brewers right now. But that's what better teams do. They rack up wins against teams that are not as good as they are. At least that's the way it's supposed to go in theory, anyway.

During this hot streak, the Angels also went into Chicago and took three out of four against the defending AL Champion White Sox. The three wins against the South Siders included a 23-1 shellacking of the Pale Hose.

Everything is clicking right now. Both the starting and relief pitching have been superb. Starting pitcher Nolan Ryan appears to have corrected himself and is the dominant pitcher we expected him to be. The defense is playing well for the most part. And the offense is on fire, especially Bobby Bonds.

This team still has a lot of work to do if they want to try and get back into contention. And while that may not happen, the Halos still have a lot to play for.

This is a team that went 66-96 in '78. But the team is improving and giving the fans hope.

The Angels are still an enigma and things might still go south on them at some point this season.

But there's reason for optimism right now. Picking up third baseman Doug Rader from the Blue Jays for Ron Jackson is a step in the right direction, despite Rader being injured in his first game with his new team. Rader brings with him a better glove in the field and power, the latter of which is something Jackson only had on rare occasions. Rader was languishing on the bench behind starter Roy Howell in Toronto. The Angels recognized his value as a starter and made the right move in acquiring him.

The team may have to make a few more moves as the season goes on if they are really committed to getting this thing turned around. And that might involve moving a big ticket item or two, possibly including Ryan or Frank Tanana.

But if things keep going like they are now...look out! The Angels might surprise even themselves before the season is over.

It feels like a turnaround is right around the corner. This team should be better, much better, than last season.

However, questions still linger.

Can the bullpen continue pitching at a high level? Closer Dave LaRoche is finally saving games rather than blowing them. Dyar Miller is a good hand to have coming out of the 'pen. Ditto for Mike Barlow. But, inconsistency has still plagued the bullpen for much of the first one-third of the season.

The starting three in the rotation of Ryan, Tanana and Paul Hartzell are quite formidable. If they remain hot things could get really interesting.

You could make the argument the Angels play in baseball's toughest division in the AL West. Kansas City, Chicago and Texas are ahead of them and leap-frogging any of them in the standings will be a tall order.

But these guys are starting to show the fight of a winner.

Let's just hope the momentum continues because with these guys you just don't know.

I'm predicting that they get the ship righted but the playoffs, even if they continue to play well, are a real long-shot at best.

You fans of the boys from Anaheim stick around. The remainder of the season should be quite interesting.

GAME SUMMARY:
The Angels jumped out to a 6-0 lead and appeared to be cruising to a victory that would put them over .500 for the first time this season. But then, the Angels melted down. Like the game started by Frank Tanana against Boston earlier in the season, Angels pitching faltered and the Tigers scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th for an 8-6 victory. The Angels got to Tiger starter Milt Wilcox early. In the top of the 1st,Gil Flores singled in Jerry Remy. 2 outs later, Joe Rudi blasted a towering 2-run homer to left that landed in the second deck. Doug Rader followed Rudi with a solo shot to left-center that made it 4-0 Angels. The Angels added a run in the top of the 4th on a solo homer by Tony Solaita to make it 5-0 Angels. In the top of the 7th, Jerry Remy hit a Milt Wilcox heater that barely cleared the wall for the Angels' fourth homer of the game to make it 6-0 Angels. Frank Tanana sailed through the first seven innings, allowing only 2 hits and had faced only 1 batter of the minimum. But Tanana yielded a homer to Steve Kemp to start the bottom of the 8th inning. Tanana then was touched up for a triple by Ben Ogilvie and then Milt May singled in Ogilvie to cut the lead to 6-2. Manager Jim Fregosi pulled Tanana and went to reliever Dyar Miller. Miller promptly allowed singles to Phil Mankowski and light-hitting Tom Veryzer to load the bases. Ron LeFlore then singled to drive in Milt May to cut the lead to 6-3. After getting Tito Fuentes to fly out, Fregosi then went to his closer lefty Dave LaRoche to face the left-handed power-hitters in the middle of the line-up. LaRoche walked Jason Thompson to force in Phil Mankowski to cut it to 6-4. LaRoche then served up a slider that Rusty Staub bashed into the upper deck in right for a grand slam to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead and send the fans that remained at the stadium into orbit. Closer Steve Focault shut the Angels down in the 9th to preserve the victory. Reliever Bruce Taylor picked up the win for the Tigers, pitching the 8th inning. The Angels are developing a habit of losing healthy leads.
