Just to add another layer to this already very interesting discussion, I feel the even worst part of the matter is the fact that this has got to be the most underwhelming build towards Wrestlemania I can remember in recent years. Aside from the fact that we are two weeks out with more than half of the card still up in the air (I think that’s another first in WWE) and with the exception of a few matches (amongst those already made official or rumored), I honestly cannot recall the last time I was practically indifferent during this time of the season. I mean, instead of being all pumped up and counting down the days until April 7th rolls around, I find myself in kind of a “meh” mode. Let’s see:
The RAW tag team division is still the biggest joke and it really saddens me to say this while the Revival (one of the best tag teams all around in the business) are champions; Asuka and the SD woman’s championship has become an afterthought; both IC and US championships are being treated like a hot potato with no serious story lines/feuds; the universal championship? Same shit, different year. Heck, they even managed to fuck up what was probably the hottest story line, that of the RAW woman’s championship.
So, basically, not only is the build as poor as it gets, they actually expect people to stay tuned for over (approximately) eight hours? I get it, it’s once a year but, man, if the writing (aka story lines) was better overall, I feel this would be more tolerable and less of an ordeal, thus less complaining overall.
Perhaps not the best of examples, but in order to put things in perspective, take House of Cards, one of my all time favorite shows; or, for the sake of this conversation, choose whatever show you liked best . Aside from this specific show being one of my favorites, Netflix would pump out all ten/twelve episodes of each season around February, a detail quite significant in regards to the point I am trying to make. That being said, as soon as the episodes were released, it would usually take me a day or two to go through all of them. With each episode almost an hour long, I literally had no issue, nor got bored, of watching five or six episodes at a time, thus five to six hours straight. Why? Because of the great story telling that had me glued to the TV and eager for more as soon as each episode was over.
Now, again, perhaps not the best of comparisons but I feel you can all catch my drift…
As for Mania becoming a two day extravaganza, while I’m not necessarily against the idea, logistically speaking, I’m not entirely sure everything can add up. To be honest, I haven’t really given this too much thought and I certainly ain’t no expert in regards to this subject so, if they can somehow make it happen, sure, why not…
