So I was doing a bit of reading and saw that we should expect "many" new Pokemon in gen 8. Given that the number is 807 now, I wonder if they plan on hitting 1000.
Gen 5 still has the most Pokemon per generation added at 156. The game itself is going to be a huge deal being that it will be the first Pokemon game of it's kind to be on console and not handheld so I am thinking they will want to hit that 1000 mark to celebrate it.
