RECAPPING THE ROAD TO FASTLANE

FIVE WAY FRAY FOR THE WWE CHAMPIONSHIP

On an episode of Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan announced that the current WWE Champion AJ Styles would defend the championship in a five way match at Fastlane and followed that up by saying the four challengers would have to qualify for the match.
That same night Randy Orton defeated “Glorious” Bobby Roode to qualify, Dolph Ziggler beat WWE US Champion Chad Gable (Non-title), John Cena beat Baron Corbin, and Kofi Kingston beat Jinder Mahal all to qualify for the match.

GLORIOUSLY STRONG

At the 2018 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event, Shinsuke Nakamura won the men’s 30-man over the top battle royal to earn a world championship match at WrestleMania 34. After failing to qualify for the Fastlane main event Bobby Roode challenged Nakamura for a shot at his WrestleMania Opportunity and Nakamura accepted.

FABULOUS RIOT

The overconfident current WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Carmella announced on an episode of Friday Night Smackdown that she didn’t care who her opponent would be for Fastlane. Which brought out Ruby Riot and the Riot Squad who cornered Carmella in the ring and Riot accepted the challenge.

RISING SUN PRIZE FIGHT

On an episode of Smackdown the repackaged duo of Akira Tozawa & Hideo Itami known as Sons of the Rising Sun, beat Breezango, Rusev Day and Epico & Primo to earn a shot at the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships at Fastlane.

READY WILLING AND GABLE LONE WOLF

An irate Baron Corbin furious over failing to qualify for the Fastlane main event would turn his attention to the current WWE United States Champion Chad Gable. Launching repeated attacks on the latter which resulted in Gable issuing a challenge to the “Lone Wolf” for a match at Fastlane for the title.

IRISH FLAIR VERSUS THE CANADIAN SAMOAN CONNECTION

The last match announced for the WWE Fastlane pay per view event was a tag team match pitting the duo of Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair against the team of Natalya Neidhart and Tamina Snuka. This match came about after Lynch was feuding with Neidhart while Flair was doing the same with Snuka

RECAPPING THE ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA 34

ONCE BROTHERS NOW OPPONENTS - WWE UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP

At the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event Roman Reigns got a shot at and won the WWE Universal Championship by defeating the then champion Brock Lesnar.
After the event was done and dusted the now former champion aka Lesnar would take a sabbatical from WWE leaving the door open for a rematch for the title intact on his return.

However this left the newly crowned champion without a challenger and so we headed into the RAW branded Elimination Chamber pay per view to crown one for a shot at the title at WrestleMania 34. Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose,
Finn Balor, Seth Rollins and the Miz went to war inside satan’s structure but in the end it would end in a draw between Ambrose and Rollins and as a result a triple threat for the title was announced for WM 34.

SAMOAN SAVAGE V C-NATION

In early 2018 the self proclaimed “Samoan Savage” Samoa Joe defeated Roman Reigns to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his WWE career. After successfully seeing Reigns off in a rematch Joe would retain the title at the WWE Elimination Chamber ppv against NXT’s Johnny Gargano in an open challenge. From here Joe surprisingly showed up at the Smackdown branded Fastlane pay per view and seemingly set his eyes on the blue brand’s John Cena by interfering in the main event and costing Cena his shot at becoming WWE Champion. On the post-Fastlane episode of Smackdown, Cena challenged Joe to a match for the WWE IC Championship at Mania and Joe accepted.

BLISSFUL EMPRESS

Alexa Bliss would enter 2018 as the reigning and defending WWE RAW Women’s Champion and would continue to do so going into WrestleMania 34. Meanwhile the “Empress” Asuka would enter the inaugural 30-woman Royal Rumble match as the seventeenth entrant and went onto win the match and earn herself a women’s championship match at WrestleMania 34 in the process. While Bliss successfully retained her title in the inaugural women’s elimination chamber match at the EC ppv, Asuka would also retain her WrestleMania Opportunity against NXT’s Kairi Sane at the same event. From here it was confirmed that Asuka would indeed be challenging Bliss for the title at WrestleMania 34.

REVIVAL OF THE EXTREME CHAPTER 2

At the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event the Hardy’s would defeat Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose to win the WWE RAW Tag Team Championships. After seeing the former champions off in a rematch on an episode of Monday Night RAW, their next challengers the Revival would earn their shot in a number one contenders match. At the Elimination Chamber ppv Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder aka the Revival would defeat the Hardy’s to claim the titles, in the weeks following the newly crowned champions laid out the challenge of a rematch to the Hardy’s. The champions would even let the Hardy’s pick the stipulation for the rematch at Mania and the Hardy's picked Tables, Ladders and Chairs match.

PHENOMENAL STRENGTH

The “Phenomenal” AJ Styles entered 2018 as the WWE Champion and would successfully retain his championship against both John Cena and Randy Orton at the Royal Rumble ppv first in a triple threat match. Then he followed this up by successfully retaining against the quartet of challengers of Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, John Cena and Randy Orton in a five way match at the Fastlane PPV.
Meanwhile the King of Strong Style Shinsuke Nakamura won the 2018 men’s Royal Rumble match and in doing so earned a world championship match at WrestleMania 34, he would later pick the WWE Championship.

READY WILLING AND GABLE? YES YES YES!

At the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble ppv event Chad Gable challenged and defeated the then WWE United States Champion Dolph Ziggler to win the title for the first time in his career. After seeing off Ziggler in a rematch for the title on an episode of Smackdown he would go on to successfully retain the title against Baron Corbin at the Fastlane ppv. After the conclusion of the Fastlane title defense he would be attacked by Corbin which brought out the current general manager of Smackdown Daniel Bryan who cleared the Lone Wolf from the ring. Bryan then shockingly announced he had been cleared to return to the ring and would do so at a later date. Gable would ask Bryan to meet him in the ring on a following episode of Smackdown and said that the US Championship was the first title that Bryan won and would be honored to put the title on the line and be his return opponent at WM 34 and Bryan accepted.

FABULOUS RIOT

Carmella was the WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion going into Fastlane 2018 pay per view, however she wouldn’t walk out of the event the same way. As she would be defeated by her opponent aka the leader of the Riot Squad aka Ruby Riot marking Riot’s first run with the title. It was announced that the Princess of Staten Island aka Carmella would cash in her rematch clause at WM 34.

AN INZAYN PRIZEFIGHT PROPOSITION

The duo of Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn later known as the Inzayn Prizefighters captured the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships from the Uso’s in early January 2018 for the first time. From there they would successfully retain the titles against the Uso’s at the Royal Rumble pay per view and then the Sons of the Rising Sun at Elimination Chamber. Going into WrestleMania 34 the champions went to SD GM Daniel Bryan and asked him to ok a tag team invitational for the titles at WrestleMania 34 and Bryan made it official.

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE AKA WWE VS MMA

While it was known that Shayna Baszler had signed with the NXT brand after competing in the inaugural Mae Young Classic in late 2017, and it was speculated that Ronda Rousey might be on her way to the company the WWE Universe were shocked at the events that unfolded at the 2018 Royal Rumble ppv. As the quartet of Baszler, Rousey, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir entered the match but not as official participants and they set their sights on the so called four horsewomen of WWE. While they didn’t eliminate any of them as they weren’t a part of the match but they did play a part in the eliminations of Bayley and Becky Lynch. After the WWE Chairman Paul Levesque held a meeting with Lynch, Flair, Banks and Bayley and against his better judgment he signed Rousey, Duke and Shafir to WWE main roster contracts and upgraded Shayna Baszler from an NXT contract to a WWE main roster and announced the match for WM 34.

EIGHTH & NINTH WONDERS OF THE WORLD

The last two matches announced for the WWE WrestleMania 34 pay per view event were the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal which had become a staple of the event since its introduction at WrestleMania 30, as well as the inaugural Ninth Wonder Battle Royal. However it was announced that for the first time ever in regards to both battle royals which would have 34 superstars involved in each that the respective winners would get a title shot of their choosing at a time of their choosing.
For the men that meant a shot at either the WWE IC, WWE US, WWE RAW Tag Team or WWE SD Tag Team Championships meanwhile for the women it meant either the WWE RAW or WWE SD women’s Championships.
