Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

who_framed_roger_rabbit_by_jamesohgoodie.jpg

One of my all time favorites which I
haven't watched in 5 years or so. I
finally decided it was time to give it
a spin...and it never fails to impress
me.

Seriously for 1988...it still holds up
visually & the story & characters are
great.

I must get around to buying the
book it based on one of these
days.

Oh...& some random comment about
Jessica Rabbit being hot.

I'm sure it was expected from me so
there you go.

Tron (1982). Flynn works for Dillinger but is hacking into Dillinger's account to find what he's doing which is potentially illegal. Dillinger's computer Encomm is state of the art and light years ahead of anything the Pentagon and The Kremlin has. It wants to get access to the Pentagon and Moscow because it thinks it's a superior system and wants to run it better.

Flynn tries to hack into Encom but as a defensive mechanism, Encom zaps him into its own computer system and now he's in a virtual world where he is a character in a video game and, the only way to survive, is to win random games. He has an identity discu and if he keeps winning, he's part of the Warrior Elite.

The movie itself is visually stunning but there's not much of a story there. Encom is trying to takeover the world and Dillinger has been indicted on corruption charges when he was young seems the gist of the plot.

Saturday Night Triple Feature:

The Man with Two Brains (1983)

I don't usually watch comedy films...
but this one was pretty decent.

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018)

b38ca3c13f9710faf6ddf7899fbe9aa2.jpg

I really, REALLY want to like these animated
Godzilla films...but...well...they just seem to be
a giant bucket of missed opportunities & wasted
potential.

Seriously you tease the fans with an AMAZING
MechaGodzilla design that can apparently shape
shift & repair itself T-1000 style...AND you have it
on the posters & release toys of it...

mechagodzilla-1110998.jpeg

But you don't actually have it in your film?

That is fucking lame Toho...so fucking lame.

The Last Starfighter (1984)

Saturday Night Double Feature:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
This film is far better than it has any right to be.

Creepshow (1982)
This one is kind of odd for me...it seems to get
worse every time I watch it. Each story seems
to run 5 to 10 minutes too long...they really
should have trimmed away the access in the
editing room.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017). Roman Israel is a criminal defense attorney whose law partner William Henry Jackson suddenly suffered a heart attack. His family has decided to sell the law firm because was operating more like a charity than a business. The lawyer who buys it out George Pierce (Colin Farrell) is a defense attorney who's only interested in the bottom line. He pleads out the cases and collects his paycheck. When his client complains, he just dumps them off to the public defender's office and moves on.

This is in direct contrast to Roman (Denzel Washington), a tough minded, argumentative, defense attorney. He's smart, never feels he's wrong, and he pisses off people with his inciting remarks. He wants you to live up to higher principles and, if you don't, he won't shy away from telling you about it.

Israel eventually works for Pierce's law firm and is assigned the Darrell Willoughby case. It's shoplifting spree gone wrong as Darrell's partner in-crime Carter Johnson shot and killed an Armenian cashier. Darrell tells Roman were Carter Johnson is hiding in hopes he can get a reduced sentence. In prison, Darrell is stabbed to death and the only person who knows Carter Johnson's whereabouts is Roman. Does Roman betray his own principles and turn Carter over for the reward money? $500,000.

Washington gives one of his better performances. It makes one wonder about a justice system where it doesn't want the case to go to trial and punishes people with harsh sentences.

Outbreak (1995)
It was pretty good...apart from having to put up with
Kevin Spacey & Dustin Hoffman whisper/mumbling
some of his dialogue.

In fact this film has a really impressive cast when
you think about it.

Deadpool 2 (2018)
Fantastic...everything worked with Brolin
being pitch perfect as Cable & Domino
being an absolute babe who could kick
some serious ass.

The Meg (2018)
"SHUT UP MEG!!!"

Boar (2018)
So...its basically a remake of Razorback...
& its pretty lame. Nathan Jones is in it...
remember him?

A visually stunning film that I highly recommend to
anyone willing to sit & watch a story slowly unfold &
blossom like a genetically mutated flower.

Its so interesting & creative...& something tells me
I need to read the original novel as soon as possible.

This is definitely one of my films of the year.

Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) Detective Mark Dixon (Dana Andrews) has received a dozen complaints of his excessive use of force and his new boss has demoted him to second rank. One more incident could spell the end of his career. During a gambling game run by local mobster Scalisi, a high roller Morrison was stabbed to death. Dixon knows it was Scalisi who did it but he has to interview witnesses before he can pin it on him. He goes into the apartment of Ken Payne, who was there that night but Payne dislikes cops and tells him to get out. Payne is heavily drunk and punches Dixon and Dixon beats the hell out of Payne. Payne falls on his head and is dead.

Dixon tries to cover this up. He finds out from his partner Klein that Payne is a war hero and a syndicated columnist, which causes more headaches for Dixon. Dixon's father the late Sandy Dixon was a well known criminal which explains Mark's psychological makeup. He's trying to get out of his father's shadows. Beating up criminals to prove to his peers he's on the right side of the law, unlike his old man. Dixon tries to finger Scalisi for the murder of Morrison and frame him for the death of Ken Payne so he attempts to beat a confession out of him. It doesn't work because Scalisi's a smart enough guy to know Dixon killed Payne and he's trying to pin it on Scalisi to save his own ass.

Ghost in the Shell, a dark, riviting tale of a futuristic Japan, in which transhumanism, a popular philosiphy in the modern world, is put into practice. It was expertly told, the acting was great and the setting was marvellous. Section 9 outdid itself and their leader was such a strong presence onscreen, even though he didn't speak any english. The action was superb and the technology involved was cutting edge and really deep. I can understand why Ghost in the Shell made such a big impact back in the 90's. It was one of the more imaginative sci-fi titles and showed us all what mankind can do if he puts on his thinking cap.
