WWF vs. WCW 2001: Invasion

For years, I have wanted to have a go at booking the WCW invasion of the WWF - so here is my effort. As a youngster, I did quite enjoy the actual "Invasion" but with hindsight, I can see the frustrations that many people had with how things went down. I'm hoping that my effort, whilst not following the same constraints as the WWF faced at the time, will be entertaining and that you guys enjoy it. Events up to the Judgment Day pay-per-view in May 2001 remain the same and that's where I diverge from reality - including the lack of Benoit/Jericho vs. Austin/HHH (so no HHH injury) due to a "potentially career ending" injury for Benoit who I am unwilling to use or glorify in a BTB. Hope you all enjoy it, here's a reminder of the Judgment Day results if you need them ...

HARDY BOYZ & LITA vs. X-FACTOR

BACKGROUND: After a controversial victory for X-Pac and Justin Credible over the Hardy Boyz on RAW, Albert - who had played his part in the result - would hit Lita with a Baldo Bomb, a move that would incense the Hardy Boyz as well as Eddie Guerrero who has been attempting to form a bond with Team Extreme. However, in a six man tag between them, Eddie Guerrero would accidentally crack Jeff with a chair that would allow X-Factor to pick up another victory. Tensions would rise between the Hardys and Guerrero, neither Matt or Jeff trusting Eddie - this would prove wise when Eddie would convince Commissioner Regal to put him in the King of the Ring tournament rather than one of the Hardys. Things would boil over on RAW and the Hardys would beat down on Eddie to send a message that they wanted nothing to do with him. With Lita due back, a six-person tag was set up and it will be X-Factor vs. Team Extreme on HEAT before the King of the Ring PPV. Can Lita and her boys finally get a victory over the X-Factor? Or will the power of Albert and the experience of X-Pac prove decisive?

After interference from Eddie Guerrero that takes out Jeff Hardy as X-Pac and Justin Credible brawl with Matt Hardy, Albert hits a sickening Baldo Bomb to Lita for the pinfall victory.

KING OF THE RING QUALIFYING MATCH

to qualify for the King of the Ring Quarter Finals

After early eliminations of Spike and Holly by Guerrero, the Mexican is then eliminated himself by Christian. Edge and Christian attempt to team up on Gunn but he manages to eliminate Christian. Christian accidentally clotheslines Edge but he manages to fight back and hits a Spear before tossing Gunn over the top rope and securing the final Quarter Final spot.

On the day following Judgment Day, attention would turn towards King of the Ring and Shane McMahon would goad his father, Vince, into allowing one WCW superstar to enter the tournament. Declaring that whichever seven men qualified, they would prove that the WWF was superior to whatever was left in WCW, Vince guaranteed - that word - that the WCW representative would not be victorious. Shane would later reveal that the man representing his company would be the WCW Champion himself, Booker T. However, this would not sit well with the reigning King of the Ring, Kurt Angle, who would vow to Vince McMahon that now he had regained his gold medals he would take care of Booker T’s chances at King of the Ring. With his crown being defended, Angle would be given a bye to the Quarter Finals for good measure. This would lead to six qualifying matches to fill the remaining Quarter Final spots: Rhyno would defeat Spike Dudley in the opening qualifier before Test would defeat Eddie Guerrero in a WrestleMania rematch. Abusing his powers, William Regal would earn a controversial victory over Edge; Edge would initially win via countout but Regal would declare that the match must be won via pinfall or submission and would use brass knucks to knock Edge cold and secure the Quarter Final place. Rikishi would continue to rebuild his popularity with victory over Hardcore Holly, a result which would set up a repeat of the 2000 Final with Kurt Angle. Big Show would hit a Choke Slam to defeat Christian as well before Rob Van Dam, after recently making his debut with a surprise win over Commissioner Regal, would overcome the 1999 King, Billy Gunn. However, Regal - angered by Van Dam’s win over him - would arrange for D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry to take out Van Dam and that would leave a space unfilled. On Sunday Night HEAT prior to King of the Ring, a Battle Royal between the six men defeated in the qualifiers would be held and it would be Edge who would eliminate Billy Gunn to secure the final place. With the Quarter Final draw announced, it meant Edge would face Big Show along with Angle vs. Rikishi, Rhyno vs. Test and Booker T vs. William Regal.

In a rematch of the 2000 Final, Angle’s defence of his crown begins with victory as he hits Rikishi with an Angle Slam before the Ankle Lock gets him a submission victory.

In a real upset, especially after wrestling in the Battle Royal on HEAT, Edge survives the monstrous Big Show and manages to hit a version of his Edgeocution DDT for the win. However, afterwards, an angered Big Show choke slams Edge down into the mat three times!

DUDLEY BOYZ (c) vs. D’LO BROWN & MARK HENRY

BACKGROUND: In return for taking out Rob Van Dam for him, William Regal would announce that D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry would be given a shot at the Dudley Boyz’ WWF Tag Team Championships at the King of the Ring. Unfortunately, whilst Regal’s antics had been overlooked by Vince McMahon, Linda McMahon had noticed and she would take action. First, she made the Tag Team Championship match a Tables Match, a move that would greatly benefit the Dudleys, and secondly, she would pit Regal vs. Booker T in the King of the Ring tournament. After returning recently and looking impressive in the last few weeks, can D’Lo and Mark Henry secure their first WWF Tag Team Championship reign? Or will the Dudleys’ domination of the tag team world continue with yet another successful title match?

In an early shock, Henry’s strength leads to him slamming Bubba through a table. However, the Dudleys dig in and catch D’Lo on the top rope to hit a double powerbomb through a table to even it up. They then impressively double team Henry and manage to hit a 3D through a table to retain the titles.

Another impressive win for the WCW Champion who overcomes the power of Rhyno - as well as the attempted interference of Regal - to hit the Scissors Kick again and secure a Final place.

After suffering injuries in the aftermath of his Quarter Final and wrestling twice already, Edge is up against it as he battles his friend, Kurt Angle. Angle takes advantage early to blindside Edge and he struggles to get into the match, the Angle Slam wins it for the defending King.

STREET FIGHT
SHANE McMAHON vs. TRIPLE H

BACKGROUND: As Jericho proved to be a problem for Austin, Shane McMahon would prove to be a thorn in the side of his brother-in-law, Triple H. Still not over the defeat to Shane at WrestleMania or his son’s purchase of WCW, Vince McMahon would book Triple H into a Street Fight with Shane and would demand that he took Shane out once and for all. Proclaiming that his only son was Triple H, Vince would appoint himself as the special guest referee for the match, only for his wife Linda to reverse that decision as well as booking the fateful Tag Team Championship match for HHH and Austin against the Dudley Boyz. With Shane continuing to tap up the WWF competition, declaring the WCW a changed place and somewhere for them to achieve success, Vince would snap and demand a rematch with Shane on SMACKDOWN, just days before King of the Ring. However, it would prove to be a setup with HHH heading out to attack Shane from behind early in the match. Jericho and Austin would also involve themselves in proceedings and a brawl would ensue, Austin and HHH ending up being the two to back off from Jericho and Shane. Will Triple H be able to follow his father-in-law’s demands and take Shane McMahon and the WCW out for good? Or will Shane produce yet another shocking victory here in the WWF ahead of the bigger fight to come?

In an epic battle that includes Shane being thrown through the glass panels of the King of the Ring set, HHH struggles more than he expected to put his brother-in-law away. When Shane hits a flying elbow through the announce desk and then sets for a Coast-to-Coast flying dropkick, Vince McMahon appears and shoves him off the top rope. HHH hits the Pedigree to the WCW Owner for the victory in a bloody, hard-fought battle.

The reigning King of the Ring’s dreams of becoming the first man to repeat are dashed in the Final as Booker T, the WCW Champion of course, manages to upset the odds. When Vince McMahon heads out looking to help Angle though, Shane manages to get off his stretcher backstage and he heads out and fights off his father. In the confusion, Booker hits the Scissors Kick and becomes the first ever non-WWF employed star to win the King of the Ring.

STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN (c) vs. CHRIS JERICHO

BACKGROUND: Despite an unfortunate and potentially career-ending neck injury suffered by Chris Benoit, Jericho would become a thorn in the side of the WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin and his tag team partner, Triple H. After Austin accidentally cost HHH the Intercontinental Championship at Judgment Day, there was tension between the WWF Tag Team Champions and even more so when Jericho defeated The Game to become the #1 contender for Austin’s title. With Austin and HHH blaming each other for each other’s woes, Jericho would form an unlikely alliance with the WCW Owner, Shane McMahon, leading to speculation that Jericho could win the WWF Championship and defect to the WCW. With Vince McMahon and Austin becoming increasingly paranoid about Jericho’s potential to wreak havoc - though Jericho would profess loyalty to the WWF - they would look to reduce the danger by attacking Y2J following a victory over Eddie Guerrero. With Jericho’s ankle wrapped in a steel chair, Austin would deliver a stomp from the top rope. Although his ankle was miraculously not broken, this gave Jericho less than two weeks to recover in time for King of the Ring. However, on the RAW before the PPV, Jericho would come through the crowd and make his return to hit Austin between the eyes with the WWF Championship belt during a Tag Team Championship match with the Dudley Boyz. This would allow the Dudleys to hit Austin with a 3-D and become the new champions, Jericho costing Austin and HHH their titles just days before King of the Ring. Can Jericho finally live up to his potential and walk out of King of the Ring with the WWF Championship? Or will the paranoid Rattlesnake once again find a way to keep the title firmly in his control?

In an evening of shocks, Austin’s WWF Championship is in real jeopardy as Jericho looks to be putting in the biggest performance of his career. After several close calls, Jericho then shows resilience by kicking out of the Stunner as well. In the end, Austin resorts to a steel chair - right in front of the official - and he is disqualified. The night ends though with Jericho locking Austin in the Walls of Jericho and the WWF Champion tapping out for the world to see …

Firstly dude, kudos for taking this booking challenge on. I think there's absolutely no doubt that the whole invasion angle could have and should have been better - but there's definitely some legit reasons for that and as you alluded to in the OP, WWE was dealing with some constraints and had their hands tied behind their back especially in regards to the bigger names of WCW that were able to sit-home on big wages and see out the rest of their contracts. I wonder if that's something you're going to move away from and look to give us a fully-fledged Invasion angle.

Either way, I'm excited to see what you do!

King of the Ring 2001 Review:

- Opening the show with 6-man tag team action and it's X-Factor who pick up the win thanks to Eddie. Albert again hitting Lita with Baldo Bomb and scoring the pin really paints him as an absolute sicko! Suits his presentation haha! I seem to recall Matt Hardy being European Champion around this time - so interesting that you didn't go with the Title match but I' m cool with 6-man and adding Lita into the mix and getting involved suits her daredevil style too.

- 6-man Elimination Battle Royal seems a little off for me here and I think it would have been better to stick to the KOTR format and maybe just doing a quick write up from Raw on how we got to the Quarter-Finals but all good, something a little different I guess.

- Okay, so after reading on - I now see the above took place on Heat. I forgot Heat was a thing, honestly - Right, this all makes a little more sense now. Shane adding Booker into the mix is interesting too! WCW arguably going with certainty the biggest star that WCW had at the time so let's see how this plays out.

- No real surprises for me personally with the KOTR QF results but all the correct results. I guess in the time-frame, Edge beating Big Show would have been a surprise maybe, but with 2024 vision and the future to come for Edge, wasn't much of a surprise. Big Show doing his best to take out Edge after the match with three chokeslams.. DAMN! I suspect this is a way to give Edge who is the underdog in the competition a competitive out.

- Sounded like a fun Tables match to break up the KOTR action. Again, happy with the winners - and it's the Dudley Boyz that pick up the victory and continue on as the WWF Tag Champions.

- KOTR Semi-Finals next and again while no surprises, it's the correct winners and sets up a BIG final show-down between Booker T and the reigning King; Kurt Angle! Semi-Final placing for Rhyno is nice though, great run for him and of course as expected, the injuries unfortunately too much for Edge to overcome.

- New opponent but same outcome for Shane who finds himself going through the now iconic moment of the KOTR glass panel this time at the hands of Triple H. I like the different route you have taken here with the family affair of the McMahons at war and with Triple H involved too! Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

- KING.. BOOOOKKAAAHHHHH! Brave and bold choice to go with Booker as the King of the Ring. I sense this is to give WCW a huge foot up right off the back and instantly make Booker credible as he will now presumably be in the mix going forward as a major star and leading the charge of the Invasion.

- Really glad you've cut out Benoit here and just gone with Jericho challenging the rattlesnake, Steve Austin. As for the result.. WOW! Now that is a SHOCK! I was expecting despite a strong attempt from Y2J that Stone Cold would find a way, and maybe he would have had it not been for Shane stopping his Father from swaying the odds. Career making victory for Jericho though, especially causing Stone Cold to tap out in the middle of the ring for the world to see.

Going to be interesting to see what happens when the dust truly settles on this situation. Is Jericho going to stay loyal to the WWF? Is Vince's attempts of trying to make sure the WWF Championship stayed with Austin and thus the World Wrestling Federation going to back-fire and push Jericho to defect? Will Shane make a play for Jericho to turn? Intrigued.

Cheers for the thoughts, Deco. I definitely won't be constraining myself with this, any WCW wrestler is fair game. Whilst it's probably a little unrealistic, I'm not stretching it out till 2002 to start the invasion. That being said, it doesn't mean I'm going to bring in every WCW talent and I may delay the arrival of a number of them.

Moving forwards, here is the Vengeance PPV - I replaced Invasion with this - and I will summarise Summerslam as well. After Summerslam, I will be writing RAW and SMACKDOWN and the shows will be in more detail. GCB

Can Albert put a stop to Edge’s momentum with a Baldo Bomb? Or can Edge secure the Intercontinental Championship and live up to his recent hype?

After his promising effort at King of the Ring, Edge follows up by hitting the Edgeocution DDT to defeat Albert and win his first singles title in the WWF.

BACKGROUND: Following a deterioration in their relationship with little brother Spike over his relationship with Molly, the Dudleys display a new attitude. However, when they attempt to deliver a “tough love” beatdown to Spike, the APA come out to even up the odds. This rises tensions between the Dudleys and the APA and leads to the two of them clashing at Vengeance with the gold on the line. Will the Dudleys’ new attitudes see them retain their titles once again? Or will the APA be able to get their hands on the titles for the third time?

Another impressive win for the Dudleys as they hit the 3D on Faarooq to retain their titles.

WWF EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

JEFF HARDY (c) vs. EDDIE GUERRERO vs. MATT HARDY

BACKGROUND: After Eddie Guerrero returned and cost the Hardys their match with X-Factor on HEAT before the King of the Ring, the flimsy trust between them is over. However, the following night on RAW, Guerrero cheats his way to European gold after a low blow to Matt Hardy allows him to hit the Frog Splash for 3. In the match, Matt picks up an injury that rules him out for a couple of weeks. During that time, Jeff - in the absence of his brother - challenges Eddie for the gold and he manages to hit the Swanton Bomb and become the European Champion himself! With both Eddie and Matt entitled to a rematch, Commissioner Regal announces that it will be a triple threat at Vengeance for the title. Although Matt and Jeff say that they have no problem with this, a tag team match with the Holly Cousins shows that there is a little bit of tension between them before Guerrero appears; this allows Crash to roll up Jeff for an upset victory for the Hollys. Will this bubbling tension between the Hardy Boyz spill over during the triple threat match? Will Eddie Guerrero regain the European Championship? Or will one of the Hardys take revenge on Guerrero and walk out the European Champion?

Jeff retains the European gold when he takes advantage of Eddie hitting the Frog Splash to his brother. Jeff takes out Eddie with a jawbreaker and then hits the top rope to deliver the Swanton to Matt to get the pinfall victory.

WWF HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP
HARDCORE RULES MATCH
RHYNO (c) vs. SPIKE DUDLEY

BACKGROUND: As part of the ongoing feud with Spike, the APA and the Dudley Boyz, Bubba and D-Von recruit Rhyno, their former fellow ECW star, to team with them in a 6-man tag. In a huge surprise, Spike stuns Rhyno with the Dudley Dog to get the pinfall and win the match which enrages the Hardcore Champion. Despite his historic, unprecedented run as Hardcore Champion, Rhyno flips over Spike pinning him and the challenge is made for a Hardcore Championship match at Vengeance; Spike accepts and vows to shock the world again. With the Hollys also still questioning whether Spike’s relationship with Molly should be allowed, Spike also vows to prove to everybody that he is tough enough to take care of Molly as well. Can Spike pull off another upset and become the Hardcore Champion? Or will Rhyno prove that the first time was a fluke and continue his run as the champion?

As he looks to prove to the Holly Cousins that he is tough enough to look after Molly, Spike takes the fight to the Man Beast who is in the midst of an impressive and unprecedented Hardcore Championship reign. Unfortunately for Spike, he fails to hit the Dudley Dog when Rhyno throws him off and he then hammers him with the Gore for the 3 count. When Molly checks on Spike’s condition, Rhyno hits the Gore to her as well in a disgusting moment.

ROB VAN DAM vs. WILLIAM REGAL

BACKGROUND: After William Regal hired Mark Henry and D’Lo Brown to take out Rob Van Dam prior to the King of the Ring, costing RVD his place in the tournament, the return of the former ECW man sees him set on revenge on Henry, D’Lo and the Commissioner. Initially, Regal refuses to face Van Dam but relents in the end - if Van Dam can defeat both Henry and D’Lo, in successive matches, on RAW. Van Dam defeats Henry first via disqualification but this is deliberate; Henry uses a steel chair to get disqualified and continues to use it after the bell. With Van Dam hurt, he then faces D’Lo who looks to end Van Dam’s hopes for good. However, in a shock, Van Dam manages to roll up D’Lo and secure a win to earn the right to face Regal at Vengeance. With Regal angry at Henry and D’Lo for their failure, can he overcome the challenge of Van Dam at Vengeance? Or will the high-flying superstar take revenge on Regal for costing him a chance at King of the Ring?

After an impressive first few weeks in the WWF, Van Dam faces his biggest test yet as he faces the WWF Commissioner. Despite Regal attempting the bend the rules for himself, Van Dam hits the 5-Star Frog Splash to Regal and picks up another big victory.

BOOKER T (c) & SHANE McMAHON vs. TRIPLE H & VINCE McMAHON

BACKGROUND: After defeating Kurt Angle and becoming the 2001 King of the Ring, WCW Champion Booker T and his boss, Shane, suggest that this is the first of many moments where WCW will overcome the WWF. Clearly, this does nothing for the relationship between Vince and his son and - with Austin unwilling to give HHH a title shot - Vince convinces his son-in-law to team with him to face Booker and Shane at Vengeance. Can Shane and Booker once again show that WCW can compete with the WWF moving forwards? Or will Vince and HHH finally put the WCW in their place once and for all?

As HHH and Vince look to prove the WWF’s superiority over WCW, it looks as if their plan has backfired when Shane hits a Flying Elbow to HHH with Vince down and out on the outside. However, Kurt Angle - not seen since the King of the Ring - returns through the crowd, grabs the big gold belt and cracks it into the back of Booker’s head before hitting the Angle Slam to Shane. This allows Vince to hit the Pedigree to Shane and he picks up the win for the WWF.

BACKGROUND: Another title switching hands following the King of the Ring would be the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship with Jerry Lynn defeated on RAW the following night by the returning Scotty 2 Hotty. However, a few days later on SMACKDOWN, X-Pac would get his first reign as the Light Heavyweight Championship after he defeated Scotty. Another light heavyweight who had been impressing in recent weeks, following his introduction to the WWF as William Regal’s assistant, was Tajiri. After remaining undefeated for several weeks and picking up impressive victories, Tajiri would defeat Justin Credible despite X-Pac causing a distraction. Tajiri would make it clear that he wanted to face X-Pac and Regal would book the match if Tajiri could beat Bull Buchanan. Despite the size difference, Tajiri would hit his Buzzsaw Kick and pick up the win to secure the title shot. Can Tajiri win his first title here in the WWF? Or will X-Pac prove to the world that he does not “suck” and retain the WWF Light Heavyweight gold?

Thanks to the return of Undertaker from injury at the hands of the X-Factor, Tajiri hits the Buzzsaw Kick to a distracted X-Pac and wins the Light Heavyweight Championship.

BACKGROUND: After having to take the cheap way out to retain his WWF Championship against Jericho at King of the Ring and the mounting tensions between him and Triple H, life is proving to be a bit of a struggle for Stone Cold Steve Austin. With a rematch booked for Vengeance against Jericho - with the stipulation made that if Austin is disqualified, Jericho wins the title - Austin becomes increasingly paranoid and begins to accuse Vince McMahon of losing interest in him as well as bemoaning Triple H’s intentions to take his WWF Championship. When Austin and HHH, thanks to Jericho, fail to regain the WWF Tag Team Championships from the Dudley Boyz, Vince suggests that he needs to see a change in Austin, a little bit of the “old Stone Cold” rather than this paranoid, bitter Austin. However, this ramps up the tensions further as Austin accuses McMahon and HHH of plotting against him; HHH suggests a title match between them to settle things but Austin refuses to accept. Austin goes as far as to drop HHH with a Stunner on the RAW before Vengeance and it takes all of Vince’s negotiation skills to prevent HHH from going after him ahead of Vengeance. Will Austin’s issues with Vince and HHH prove fatal when he faces Jericho at Vengeance? Can Jericho take advantage of Austin’s fragile mindset and finally become WWF Champion? Or will Austin manage to turn back the clock and find a bit of the old Rattlesnake to prove himself a worthy WWF Champion?

Despite their differences and Austin refusing to give him a title shot, Triple H opts to help the WWF Champion when the referee is down. He clocks Jericho in the back of the head with the title belt as he has the Walls of Jericho locked in and this gives Austin time to recover and hit the Stunner to retain. However, after the bell, HHH drops Austin with the Pedigree to hit back for the Stunner he received in the build up to Vengeance and he places the title belt over Austin.

BACKGROUND: After Jeff retained the title at Vengeance by hitting a Swanton Bomb to Matt, the tension between the two Hardy boys would escalate with Lita right in the middle of things. With Matt particularly upset by the way Jeff pinned him, he accuses Jeff of taking advantage of his injury problems and his issues with Guerrero to “steal” his European Championship. Lita, exasperated, suggests that the two of them have one match to get everything out of their system so that they can then return to being the Hardy Boyz. Adding more fuel to the fire though, Regal books that match as a TLC match and Summerslam will see the two Hardys fighting like animals for the right to walk out as European Champion. Can the two brothers survive their TLC match at Summerslam? And which one of them will walk out as the WWF European Champion?

In an amazing and fast-paced opener, the sibling rivalry between Matt and Jeff explodes in a classic TLC match. In the end, Jeff connects with the Swanton off the ladder and this buys him enough time to get up the ladder and retrieve the European gold.

BIG SHOW, BILLY GUNN & WILLIAM REGAL vs. TAJIRI (c) & APA

BACKGROUND: Sympathising with the Big Show and Billy Gunn’s lack of opportunities, William Regal suggests that they can help him and earn the right to get more opportunities moving forwards. To do that, they must take care of a little problem for him. That problem is the exploding popularity of Tajiri who, with the fans cheering him, has started to refuse to follow orders from Regal and is intent on proving himself to be a fan favourite. Regal would snap and attack Tajiri on RAW after he defended the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship but would be embarrassed when the Japanese star managed to fight back and bust his nose with a Buzzsaw Kick. Big Show and Billy would accept Regal’s offer and, the following week, would aim to take Tajiri out … but the APA would race out to protect him. This would lead to a 6-man tag being booked for Summerslam as Tajiri, with his protection by his side, will look to take out Regal and his hired assistance. Can Tajiri finally break free of William Regal? Or will Regal have the last laugh on his former assistant?

Unhappy at Tajiri becoming a fan favourite and finding success without him, William Regal looks to make him pay here at Summerslam. However, with APA backing Tajiri up, it’s not as easy as it may feel for Regal or his partners in Big Show and Billy Gunn. In the end, Tajiri comes close to embarrassing Regal a few times but Big Show drops the Japanese with the Choke Slam for the pinfall victory.

BACKGROUND: After it was announced that Chyna will be leaving the WWF, Lita challenges her to face her one more time at Summerslam in her final match. Chyna is happy to accept the challenge.

In Chyna’s final match in the WWF, Lita gives everything to attempt to become the Women’s Champion by defeating the outgoing champion. Although Chyna dominates, she makes a mistake when she underestimates Lita and lifts her shoulders up from a pinfall. As Chyna looks to hit a Military Press Slam, Lita manages to wriggle clear, slide down behind Chyna and lock her in a small package for the 3 count. Despite her disappointment, Chyna raises Lita’s hand afterwards and walks out of the WWF looking proud of her achievements.

BACKGROUND: With Edge’s career skyrocketing following King of the Ring and his Intercontinental Championship victory at Vengeance, it would appear that Christian would be showing signs of jealousy of his brother’s success. Desperate to get back on top himself, Christian would set about getting the two of them a shot at the WWF Tag Team Championships at Summerslam against the Dudley Boyz. However, whilst Christian would be off doing this, Edge would accept a challenge from the WWF Hardcore Champion Rhyno to face him at Summerslam with the Intercontinental Championship on the line. By the end of the night, Edge would be booked in two separate title matches. Although he would be encouraged to drop one of them by Christian, Edge would refuse and would vow to not only retain the Intercontinental Championship but then win the Tag Team Championships. With Christian appearing uneasy over this, Edge seemed confident of a double success. Will Edge walk away from Summerslam with two title belts? Or could it be a horrible night and he walks away with nothing?

With a Tag Team Championship match still to come later tonight, Edge goes to war with Rhyno over the Intercontinental Championship and emerges victorious with the Spear after Rhyno misses the Gore and collides with the buckles. After the match though, an angry Rhyno attacks Edge with a chair and then Gores him through a wooden table.

BACKGROUND: After Vince McMahon allowed Shane McMahon to enter a WCW competitor in the King of the Ring, Vince challenges Shane to show that he has the balls to do similar - and allow a WWF superstar the chance to challenge for the WCW Championship. Revealing that he has full confidence in the WCW Champion - and King of the Ring - Booker T to defend the gold, Shane accepts and it is then revealed that it will be Kurt Angle challenging. Desperate to take vengeance for the “embarrassment” he suffered at King of the Ring when he was denied a repeat, Angle is focused on taking the WCW Championship and, in his words, “throwing it in the trash where it belongs.” These words do not sit well with Shane or Booker T who accuse Angle of deep disrespect for the heritage of the WCW Championship but Angle says that his accomplishments of the WWF Championship, being the King of the Ring and winning the Olympic gold medal far outweigh being WCW Champion. Angle claims that this is all about revenge and hurting Booker T for what he did to him at King of the Ring and he doesn’t give a crap about being the WCW Champion. When Vince applauds Angle’s sentiments and promises him a WWF Championship opportunity once he has embarrassed Shane, Booker and the WCW Championship, Angle’s mission is clear. Can Angle “embarrass” the WCW Championship by capturing it at Summerslam? Or will Booker T, with one big win over Angle already, prove that the WCW Championship is worth a lot more than Angle thinks?

After winning the WWF’s King of the Ring crown, Booker T - thanks to Shane returning the favour to the WWF - defends his WCW gold against the man he defeated in the King of the Ring Final, a vengeful Kurt Angle. However, Angle continues to struggle against Booker and is unable to put him away, the Ankle Lock failing due to the resilience of Booker to escape. In a real insult, Booker hits the Angle Slam to put the Olympian down and then the Scissors Kick again to secure the victory and retain the WCW Championship.

2-ON-3 HANDICAP STEEL CAGE MATCH
BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION vs. X-FACTOR

BACKGROUND: After X-Factor put the Brothers of Destruction out of action recently, Kane and Undertaker return ahead of Summerslam with a 2-on-3 match booked. However, Undertaker returns with anger in his eyes and reveals that somebody has been stalking his wife. Footage of Taker’s home keeps being shown during television broadcasts with close-up shots of his wife, Sara, in her bikini, her underwear and relaxing around the house. When X-Factor claim responsibility for the stalking, Undertaker vows to make them pay big time. The match is booked as a steel cage match to contain it but promises to be absolute carnage. Can Undertaker and Kane take revenge for the treatment of Sara by the X-Factor? Or will X-Factor make the numbers advantage pay and take out the Brothers of Destruction once again?

Inside the steel cage, Undertaker and Kane look to punish Albert, X-Pac and Justin Credible for their treatment of Sara. Despite the numbers disadvantage, Kane and Taker end up hitting each man with the Choke Slam and then Taker drops X-Pac with the Tombstone for the victory. After the match, Albert looks down at X-Pac, shakes his head and walks away. Is this the end of the line for the X-Factor?

WINNERS: BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION via pinfall

STREET FIGHT
SHANE McMAHON vs. VINCE McMAHON

BACKGROUND: Angry at the way Kurt Angle and Vince McMahon are attempting to rundown the WCW Championship and the disrespect being show to the WCW Champion, Shane challenges Vince to once again get in the ring at Summerslam in a WrestleMania rematch to settle things once and for all. Vince has no problem accepting the challenge and he vows to embarrass Shane just as Booker T will be embarrassed by Kurt Angle. Will we finally see an end to the feud between Vince and his son? Or will this prove to be yet another catalyst in this building war between Vince’s WWF and Shane’s WCW?

Intent on taking revenge for WrestleMania and the way Shane has wreaked havoc on the WWF since his purchase of WCW, Vince takes the fight to his son with vicious intentions. However, in typical Shane fashion, he shows guts and resilience to comeback and take high-flying risks. After hitting the elbow drop to his father through the announce table, Shane seems to be fully in control … when Shawn Michaels suddenly makes an appearance. He hits Sweet Chin Music to Shane and this allows Vince to once again drop Shane with a Pedigree for the 3 count.

WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

DUDLEY BOYZ (c) vs. EDGE (c) & CHRISTIAN

Despite a brave effort from Edge following his earlier victory and beatdown, he is not 100% here and it shows as Christian has to take the lead. In the end, Edge misses D-Von with an attempted Spear when Christian is down and this gives the champions a chance to strike with the 3D and retain the titles. After the match, Christian is clearly upset with Edge and storms off.

NO HOLDS BARRED TRIPLE THREAT MATCH
STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN (c) vs. THE ROCK vs. TRIPLE H

BACKGROUND: After Triple H dropped Austin with the Pedigree at Vengeance, moments after helping him to over Jericho for the title, the tensions between him and the Rattlesnake explode the following night on RAW. Following a HHH victory over Jericho that would secure him the #1 contender spot for Summerslam, Austin would attack The Game and their feud would reignite. However, the following week, Linda McMahon would bring shocking news; The Rock would be returning next week and she was opting to put him in the main event of Summerslam as well! Three of the biggest stars ever in the WWF, in one match for the ultimate prize, the WWF Championship. Linda would also announce that it would be a no holds barred match for good measure and that there would be no cheap victories, whoever wins will earn it. The Rock would return the week before Summerslam and Vince would convince HHH/Austin to repeat their beatdown of him from the RAW after WrestleMania; the egos of the two would not work together this time though and they would end up brawling too. This would allow Rocky to plant both with the Rock Bottom and stand tall heading for Summerslam. Can The Rock make his return to the WWF and recapture the WWF Championship that he lost so controversially at WrestleMania? Will Triple H, after months of working with Austin, be the man to dethrone the Rattlesnake? Or will Austin, somehow, find a way to escape with the title once more despite the challengers in his path?

With all three men down and out, the exhaustion showing after twenty-five minutes of high-intensity action, the crowd are on the edges of their seats, desperate to know which man will walk out of Summerslam with the WWF Championship? Desperation etched all over his face, the first man to drag himself to a somewhat vertical base in Austin, the WWF Champion, wondering how he can get out of this situation with his title back around his waist. As he surveys the sight of both of his challengers stirring, he opts to deliver sickening boots to both of their heads, trying to put them down whilst he works out what to do. However, a large “ASSHOLE!” chant from the crowd erupts and it messes with Austin’s head, his anger towards the crowd clear as they continue to disrespect him. Picking up the discarded steel chair from the corner of the ring, Austin flips the bird to the crowd here in San Jose before glaring down at The Rock, a look of familiar contempt in his eyes. Just as he did at WrestleMania, Austin starts brutalising Rocky with a chair, smashing him in the back and the legs over and over and over again. “Good God almighty,” JR yells, “Look at the poison spewing out of this paranoid, demented Rattlesnake!” However, Austin’s eyes are off his other challenger and Triple H is back to his knees as Austin goes wild on Rocky. HHH drags Austin backwards into a roll-up, a basic move but it catches Austin off guard and the referee makes the count … 1 … 2 … AUSTIN KICKS OUT IN THE NICK OF TIME!

Stunned by what almost happened, Austin gets back to his feet quickly and grabs the chair again, this time intending to take HHH’s head off with it. However, when he swings it, HHH ducks under it and as Austin spins back around, HHH lifts him into a hard-hitting spinebuster that shakes the ring. Firing up, Triple H roars out as he senses that this could be his chance with The Rock down and Austin in his control. As Austin staggers up into the corner, Hunter follows in and connects with a high knee before a brutal clothesline that almost breaks Austin’s jaw. With the WWF Champion reeling, HHH looks for the Pedigree … but then changes his mind when he sees the steel chair lying on the mat. He grabs that instead and positions it in the centre of the ring before dragging Austin over it … PEDIGREE! PEDIGREE ON THE STEEL CHAIR! TRIPLE H IS GOING TO BECOME WWF CHAMPION ONCE AGAIN! Hooking Austin’s leg, HHH makes the cover … 1 … 2 … NOOOOOO! THE ROCK GETS THERE IN THE NICK OF TIME!

Perplexed at how The Rock managed to get there and break the pinfall, HHH looks stunned as he contemplates his next move. With Austin knocked cold, The Game turns his attention towards Rocky as he staggers up to his feet and begins clubbing him with right hands. However, out of nowhere, Rock fires back and somehow begins laying the smackdown on HHH. With HHH now reeling, Rock whips him into the corner and looks to follow him in … but Triple H explodes out of the corner with a huge clothesline that takes Rocky down once again. “What the hell is it gonna’ take for one of these men to put the others away?” ponders Paul Heyman on the announce desk as HHH, taking a moment to compose himself, stands over The Rock once more. Dragging him up into position for the Pedigree, HHH looks as if he may be on the brink once again … PEDIGREE! HHH DROPS THE ROCK WITH THE PEDIGREE! That’s gotta’ be it, it’s surely over now? Triple H seems to think so too as he makes the cover … 1 … 2 … NOOOOOOOO! THE ROCK SOMEHOW KICKS OUT! “How in the holy name of God has The Rock managed to kick out of the Pedigree after all he has been through here tonight?” exclaims JR, disbelief in his voice to match the disbelief in Triple H’s eyes.

Standing in the centre of the ring, the only man standing, Triple H contemplates his next move … and he opts to head out of the ring towards the timekeeper’s area. He snatches the WWF Championship belt and slides back into the ring, evil intentions on his mind here as he looks down on The Rock once again. Clutching the title, HHH sets himself as Rock starts to pull himself back up on the ropes, waiting to waffle him with the gold. However, The Rock - who has already shown amazing resilience in this match - manages to duck when HHH swings at him with the title belt and he counters with the ROCK BOTTOM! ROCK BOTTOM TO TRIPLE H! As the crowd come unglued here in San Jose, The Rock is somehow back up on his feet, looking down on The Game, the title now maybe in his hands if he can finish things off? As the flashlights pop around the arena, Rock stands over Triple H and throws his elbow pad out into the crowd … he hits one set of ropes, then the other … PEOPLE’S ELBOW! THE ROCK HITS THE PEOPLE’S ELBOW! It’s over! The Rock is surely going to become the WWF Champion …

… BUT WAIT A MINUTE! Three masked men have leapt over the barricades, three masked men are up on the ring apron. Realising their presence, Rock looks around at them instead of making the pinfall on HHH, wondering who they are. Outside the ring, starting to show signs on life, Austin looks up at the situation and wonders who they are as well. They look very, very familiar … and when they pull of their masks, they reveal themselves to the world! HOLLYWOOD HULK HOGAN! KEVIN NASH! SCOTT HALL! “JR! It’s the NWO!” yells Heyman. What the hell are the nWo doing here in the main event of Summerslam? As the three of them step through the ropes, their eyes fixed firmly on The Rock, the crowd are going wild here - what does all of this mean? Realising he is in big trouble, The Rock decides to land the first blow and he hits a big right hand to Hall but this allows Nash and Hogan to strike from behind and the beatdown is on. Three on one, the nWo are beating the hell out of The Rock here … and Austin is watching from outside the ring, a mixed look on his face. As the referee attempts to intervene, Nash delivers a right hand to him as well and knocks him down, the nWo do not care about this match, they only care about causing devastation. On the ramp, we see Shane McMahon and he is loving what he is witnessing, this is clearly an escalation on the WCW’s attack on the WWF, a declaration of all-out war it seems.

As Hogan, Hall and Nash beat down on The Rock, we see Triple H getting to his knees and realising what is happening in front of him. Taking a few seconds to take in the situation, The Game realises the magnitude of the situation and he attempts to fight back with The Rock, ambushing his former buddies in Hall and Nash from behind. However, he is too weakened to put up a real fight and is quickly overpowered as well. With Hall and Nash beating down HHH in one corner, Hogan with Rock in the other, JR wonders what Austin will do … and the WWF Champion makes an unbelievable decision as he grabs his title belt from under the ropes and retreats up the ramp away from the situation. As he passes Shane McMahon, the WCW boss points to the nWo in the ring and challenges him to go back and fight for the WWF but Austin ignores him and continues to exit. “What the hell is Austin doing?” cries out JR, disbelief in his voice about the actions of the Rattlesnake. Back in the ring, HHH and Rock are fighting a losing battle, exhaustion preventing them from putting up any kind of resistance to the nWo. Nash lifts Rock up in the air … and hits the JACK-KNIFE POWERBOMB! A JACK-KNIFE TO THE ROCK BY NASH! As the nWo celebrate this, Hall then lifts his former buddy, HHH, up into the air as well … RAZOR’S EDGE! HALL HITS THE RAZOR’S EDGE TO TRIPLE H!

As if they haven’t been punished enough though, Hogan now pulls out a lead pipe from under the ring and he rolls back under the ropes intent on finishing things off for the night. Hall and Nash first pull up The Rock, battered and almost unconscious, and they hold him in position … LEAD PIPE TO THE SKULL OF THE ROCK! WHAT A SICKENING SHOT BY HOGAN! As The Rock hits the mat, now unconscious, HHH is bravely attempting to drag himself up again on the ropes and Hogan mocks him … BEFORE STRIKING WITH THE LEAD PIPE IN THE BACK OF TRIPLE H’S SKULL AS WELL! TRIPLE H IS DOWN AND OUT AS WELL! With both the challengers for the WWF Championship down and out, the nWo stack the two of them in the centre of the ring before standing over them and raising their arms in the air. What a sickening visual for the WWF! Summerslam ends with the nWo standing tall above Triple H and The Rock!

One night on from one of the most shocking moments in WWF history, RAW begins with a video segment highlighting the magnitude of the main event of Summerslam last night - a triple threat match for the WWF Championship between arguably three of the biggest WWF superstars of all time - as well as the magnitude of the shocking ending as the New World Order - Hogan, Hall and Nash - made their return to WWF pay-per-view to destroy the main event. The video begins by showing the entrances of the two challengers, Triple H and The Rock, as well as the WWF Champion himself, Stone Cold Steve Austin before focusing in on the intense battle between the three of them, each one of them intent on walking away with the coveted gold. However, after footage of Triple H hitting the Pedigree to Austin on the barely covered concrete floor is shown, we see The Rock escaping the Pedigree in the ring and nailing the Rock Bottom to HHH. With the WWF Championship seemingly in his grasp, Rocky drops the People’s Elbow but then the footage twists towards the entrance of the WCW trio, each man coming through the crowd as Rock drops the elbow. As they surround the ring before Rocky can make the cover, we then see how the nWo began delivering a vicious beatdown to the People’s Champion. The video makes it clear that Triple H, realising that what was unfolding was bigger than their title match, tried to help Rock but was also beaten down by the invaders whilst it shows how Austin, clearly realising what was happening, decided to exit before he could fall foul of Hogan, Nash and Hall as well. The video ends with the three nWo members standing tall over the fallen bodies of two of the biggest WWF superstars and it is abundantly clear that the WCW’s invasion of the WWF has well and truly started now.

SINGLE FALL MATCH TAJIRI (c) vs. WILLIAM REGAL
With anticipation in the arena high, the night kicks off with William Regal, the Commissioner of the WWF, facing his former protege, Tajiri. After teaming with Big Show and Billy Gunn last night to defeat Tajiri and the APA at Summerslam, Regal is confident that he can finally get the upper hand over the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion here tonight and takes control in the early stages of the match. However, Tajiri uses his speed and agility to get back into things and comes close to embarrassing Regal when he locks him in the Tarantula. An attempted Buzzsaw Kick almost takes Regal’s head off but the Commissioner manages to duck it before a European uppercut stuns Tajiri. After avoiding another Buzzsaw Kick attempt, Regal manages to hit the Japanese superstar with a Regal Cutter and that proves enough for victory in a hard-fought encounter.

Backstage, Vince McMahon and the WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin, are looking shocked over the way things transpired last night at the conclusion of Summerslam. Lamenting the fact that security did not prevent the New World Order’s entrance into the arena last night, Austin tries to persuade Vince that things could have been worse and that he is fortunately still the WWF Champion; this does not placate Vince though and he looks a little incredulously at his comments. Vince responds by demanding that every single member of the WWF locker room heads out to the ring right now and he summons officials to make that happen as we head into a break.
When RAW returns from the first commercial break of the night, we see the entire WWF locker room heading down the ramp towards the ring as per Vince’s orders. Each WWF superstar stands at ringside, surrounding the ring, followed by referees and other officials, each one of them looking concerned over the turn of events last night. J.R. advises that two men conspicuous by their absence here at the moment are The Rock and Triple H, the two challengers for Austin’s championship last night at Summerslam, who are both currently in medical facilities in San Jose following the nWo attack last night. Still images of the attack are shown and J.R. informs us that, though both are expecting to be back in the next week or so, both men suffered injuries as a result. When the still images are finished, we see that the entire ringside area is full of WWF superstars, officials and announcers, all waiting to hear from the Chairman of the WWF …

Flanked by the WWF Champion, Vince McMahon heads out to the ring with a look of anger and defiance in his eyes, the severity of the WCW’s renewed threat to the WWF now fully realised. Demanding that anybody in his path gets out of his way, a path is cleared for him as he stomps up the ring steps and into the ring. However, the wide berth given to McMahon is not given to Austin with a number of WWF superstars looking annoyed with him as he looks to follow the Chairman. Austin exchanges words with the likes of Edge, the Hardy Boyz and Road Dogg, all of whom are clearly less-than-impressed over Austin’s actions in walking out on Triple H and The Rock. Spotting the situation brewing, Vince angrily tells them to allow Austin through and the Rattlesnake steps through the ropes, a look of annoyance in his eyes, to join the Chairman in the ring. Summoning a microphone, McMahon is clearly ready to come out firing after last night and he kicks off by suggesting that Shane McMahon has made the biggest mistake of his life by disrupting the main event of the biggest event of the summer. “Last night at Summerslam, Shane McMahon, the nWo and WCW all declared war on the World Wrestling Federation,” McMahon says, a bitterness in his voice, “And that will be the biggest mistake of their lives.” Suggesting that he has destroyed the WCW once before, Vince suggests that he has no problem - even with his son in charge - of doing the exact same thing once again.

Speaking directly to the superstars surrounding the ring, Vince looks to motivate them by suggesting that Shane’s WCW are looking to steal their livelihoods, steal what they have worked hard to create here in the World Wrestling Federation. “Look at the three men who cowardly attacked WWF superstars from behind last night,” Vince identifies, “Three men who walked out of the WWF … Scott Hall … Kevin Nash … Hulk Hogan. Three men who walked out on the World Wrestling Federation to try and destroy it, only to get their damn asses kicked.” Suggesting that when Hogan, Hall and Nash walked out on Vince McMahon and the WWF, they walked out on every single one of them, Vince says that he has faith that the WWF superstars will do whatever it takes to destroy the WCW once again. “People are forgetting, thanks to the nWo, that last night I kicked Shane McMahon’s ass once again in a Street Fight,” Vince adds, failing to mention the assistance from Shawn Michaels, “And Shane, that was symbolic of what will happen if you continue to poke the World Wrestling Federation.” Vince suggests that if Shane wants a war, then a war he will get one but, just like last night at Summerslam, Vince says that he will kick Shane’s ass and that their match at Summerslam was an indication of what is waiting for him. Applause breaks out from many of the WWF superstars surrounding the ring, McMahon’s inspiring words clearly doing the trick but his words do not appear to have the desired effect on the leader of the WCW …

There is a smirk in the eyes of Shane McMahon as he, accompanied by the WCW Champion Booker T, heads out onto the stage area. Booker T, who was victorious himself last night at Summerslam when he defeated Kurt Angle to retain the WCW Championship, is of course the WWF King of the Ring after he was given the opportunity to compete a couple of months ago. In return, Booker defended the WCW Championship against Angle last night and, in a real insult, hit the Angle Slam on his challenger before putting him away with the Scissors Kick. Angle’s eyes are narrowed as he glares up the ramp at Booker but Shane speaks up and informs his father that he had no intention of disrupting WWF events, particularly Summerslam, but he was left with no choice. “You see, Dad, I bought WCW to resurrect it, I bought WCW to offer wrestling fans an alternative to the WWF,” Shane explains, “And maybe one day, challenge the WWF’s position as the leader of the business.” However, Shane explains that he has since found out that his efforts to do this are being destroyed by outside forces, namely Vince McMahon himself. Revealing that arena owners are being blackmailed by Vince not to run WCW shows, sponsors are refusing to deal with Shane’s WCW for fear of alienating Vince, potential investors refusing to do business with WCW due to threats from Vince, Shane accuses his father of exerting pressure intended to keep the WCW down. “What exactly are you afraid of, Vince?” asks Shane, “Is it the same reason that, last night at Summerslam, you employed the services of Shawn Michaels to hit me with Sweet Chin Music just so you could win a match?” Questioning Vince’s “balls of grapefruits”, Shane suggests that his father left him with no choice but to strike back and that last night was the first of many attacks that the WCW will launch. “You know something, Dad, you may have defeated WCW once before,” Shane points out, “But I guarantee you, this time, things are going to be different, I will not rest until I have gotten the better of you and you can take that as a guarantee.”

The fire in Shane’s eyes, clear passion for what he is attempting to do, seems to amuse Vince though who is almost dismissive of him. Suggesting that Shane has neither the resources, the experience or the strength in numbers needed to take down his fabled WWF, Vince argues that last night’s attack was only successful due to the element of surprise. “If you and your WCW want to try any more antics, Shane, well take a look around this ring,” Vince smirks, “Every single one of these men here is loyal to the WWF and is ready to take you down and kick the WCW’s ass!” The word “loyal” seems to interest Shane though and he questions whether Vince truly believes in that last statement. Pointing out that, for the past couple of months, Shane has remained in close proximity with his WWF superstars, the WCW owner questions whether Vince believes that his superstars are all as loyal to him as he thinks they are. “You see, Vince, you accused Chris Jericho of conspiring with the WCW, you even had him beaten down,” Shane reminds us, “But let me tell you something, Dad, I’ve had a quiet word with many of your WWF superstars.” As Vince looks on a little disconcerted, Shane waves down to the ring and beckons them to show Vince just how loyal they are to the WWF. For a few moments, nobody moves and Vince starts to look a little reassured … but then D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry, two of Vince’s trusted allies make a move and head up the ramp towards Shane and Booker. They are followed by Eddie Guerrero, a former WCW roster member of course, and he heads up the ramp as well and shakes hands with Shane. On the stage area, two more men appear from behind the curtain: Big Boss Man is back and he is with his former partner, Bull Buchanan. As Vince’s face drains of colour, another man exits the ringside area, this time it is the man that has formed a close friendship with Shane, the former Intercontinental Champion, Test. As each defector shakes hands with Shane and Booker T, the final man to move is a real blow to Vince; X-Pac, ignoring the protests of Justin Credible, walks away and declares himself to be a part of the new WCW that Shane is creating. With seven WWF superstars aligning with Shane’s WCW in the blink of an eye, Shane declares, “This is just the beginning, Dad, the WCW is back and we are coming for ya!”

Tonight, right here on Monday Night RAW, after weeks of vignettes, we will see the debut of the high-flying Rey Mysterio when he faces Justin Credible!
Backstage, Vince McMahon is sitting in his office, looking perplexed after the revelations before the break when seven WWF superstars switched to the WCW: Big Boss Man, Bull Buchanan, D’Lo Brown, Eddie Guerrero, Mark Henry, Test and X-Pac. Surrounded by his closest allies, the likes of Austin, Commissioner Regal, Kurt Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn, Vince listens to what they are saying but keeps quiet as he contemplates his next step. The first person to speak up is Austin and he suggests that the time has come to fight back against the WCW and put Shane McMahon in his place. However, Austin’s words - following his actions at Summerslam - are met with a degree of scorn from Big Show who suggests that the Rattlesnake ought to have lived up those words last night when the nWo came knocking rather than running away to save his title. This obviously pisses Austin off and, stung by Big Show’s criticism, he makes the suggestion that the four of them - Austin, Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn - make a challenge to Shane and the WCW right here tonight. This meets with Vince’s approval and he immediately dispatches Commissioner Regal to deliver the challenge to Shane McMahon and the WCW. As Regal leaves, Austin looks as if he may be regretting his words but then an official informs Vince that he has a guest in the parking lot. Attention turns towards the screens where we see Shawn Michaels stepping out of a limousine; a mixed reaction is heard in the arena as HBK arrives. Back in the office, Vince sends the four WWF superstars off to prepare for their 8-man brawl later tonight as he claims he has a lot to discuss with Michaels here tonight. As Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn leave, Austin hesitates, a paranoid look on his face at being dismissed in this way by Vince in favour of Michaels here tonight.
SINGLE FALL MATCH ALBERT vs. THE UNDERTAKER
After the Brothers of Destruction defeated X-Factor inside a steel cage last night, tonight sees Albert - who appeared to leave angry at X-Pac and Justin Credible - facing Undertaker. The match, which starts prior to a commercial break and ends after it, kicks off with an insert video of Albert confirming that his time in X-Factor is over. With X-Pac now switching to WCW, Albert is definitely working alone as he takes the fight to Undertaker and puts in an impressive performance, including hitting a big Bicycle Kick to the jaw of the American Bad Ass that almost picks up a huge victory. However, despite Albert’s impressive and brave fight, even a Baldo Bomb does not prove enough for victory; Taker kicks out at 2 and manages to get to his feet and deliver a Choke Slam to secure the victory. After the match though, Undertaker shows a newfound respect for Albert and helps him to his feet before shaking his hand.

Backstage, we see Jeff Hardy, still European Champion after defeating his brother, Matt, in a TLC match last night, preparing himself for action later. Into the room walks Matt and there is still a lot of tension and awkwardness between them as they meet. With a tag match scheduled against the Holly Cousins here tonight on RAW, it is Matt who breaks the silence as he congratulates Jeff on the victory last night. Recognising that Jeff proved to be the better man on the night, Matt says that there are no hard feelings and offers a handshake. Looking relieved, Jeff takes his brother’s hand and shakes it before apologising for his comments last week when he suggested that he would be better off without Matt, blaming it on pre-Summerslam nerves. Jeff says that the two of them should never let a title come between them again and Matt agrees. Matt says that their careers are on the rise and, one day, they will probably come up against each other again, that it’s OK to fight for a title but they will always have each other’s back. Matt suggests that tonight, when the two of them face Crash and Hardcore, they should show that whilst their singles careers are rising, the Hardy Boyz will always be a force to be reckoned with here in the WWF.
Switching elsewhere backstage, Vince McMahon welcomes Shawn Michaels back to the WWF and suggests that he has finally returned home where he belongs. Thanking him for his support last night in the Street Fight, Vince says it’s good to have some good news after what has already been a trying night following the dreadful end of Summerslam. HBK says that he is happy to be back and says that he missed this place; he also reveals that he called in on Hunter on his way down and that he will be out tomorrow and will be back on SMACKDOWN with Stephanie later this week. However, HBK reveals that he is concerned about how the fans will react to him here tonight and says that he needs an opportunity to explain his actions last night and to make sure the fans understand why he chose to deliver Sweet Chin Music to Shane. Vince has no issues with this and says that he is looking forward to seeing Michaels back in the WWF ring where he belongs and to hearing his explanation.
After a commercial break, Commissioner William Regal confirms to Vince McMahon that Shane and the WCW have accepted the WWF challenge for here tonight on RAW: it will be Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn in an eight-man tag team match against WCW Champion, Booker T, Test, Eddie Guerrero and X-Pac here tonight in the main event of RAW.
Elsewhere backstage, we see Chris Jericho arriving at the arena, his first appearance in a number of weeks following a vicious beatdown - on the orders of Vince McMahon - by Mark Henry and D’Lo Brown, two former allies of Vince who have now defected to the WCW. Looking determined, Jericho heads for the locker room and J.R. informs us that we will see Jericho back in the ring here tonight. Another match tonight is also confirmed with Intercontinental Champion, Edge, and Christian teaming up with Rob Van Dam in a six man tag match against the WWF Tag Team Champions, the Dudleys, and Hardcore Champion, Rhyno.
SINGLE FALL MATCH JUSTIN CREDIBLE vs. REY MYSTERIO
In what is a showcase of the high-flying talents of the newcomer here in the WWF, Rey Mysterio amazes the audience here tonight with a highly-impressive performance on his debut. Facing Justin Credible, a man that lost both his partners over the past twenty four hours in the X-Factor break up, Mysterio quickly gets into his groove and Credible struggles to keep up with him. After hitting a double knee strike whilst swinging round the ropes (an as-yet-unnamed 619), Mysterio then leaps up on the top rope and hits a springboard splash that seals him a 3 count and his first victory here in the WWF.
WINNER: REY MYSTERIO via pinfall (3:18)
Following Mysterio’s victory, Jonathan Coachman is backstage with an interview with the new WWF Women’s Champion, the woman that defeated Chyna on her final night in the WWF, Lita. However, as Coach congratulates Lita on the biggest win of her career, she is quickly interrupted by Ivory, a former champion, who says that Chyna stole that title from her at WrestleMania and all that happened was that she was too busy with other things to win it back. Lita laughs mockingly at this suggestion and describes Ivory as “deluded” and clearly afraid of facing Chyna again. However, Lita does give Ivory chance to prove herself and says that she is more than willing to defend the gold against her here tonight. Ivory is happy to accept the challenge and declares that Lita’s reign will be a short one.
At the top of the hour, Shawn Michaels heads out and makes his long-awaited return to Monday Night RAW following his controversial interference, in order to aid Vince McMahon, in the Street Fight last night at Summerslam. Whilst the fans are delighted to see HBK back, there is a slightly mixed reaction due to this alignment with Vince McMahon and HBK dropping Shane with Sweet Chin Music. Revealing that he feeling much healthier, happier and content after his near two year hiatus from the ring, Michaels suggests that he has yet to make up his mind about whether he will ever compete in the ring again and he will make a decision about that in the future. However, HBK is here tonight to explain the reason for his return and that reason is … Vince McMahon. As you might expect, that doesn’t go down well with the fans but HBK defends it by saying that the Chairman, whatever you may think of him, has always been there for him through his troubles, always checking in on him and last night he was there for Vince McMahon. HBK says that Shane McMahon contacted him recently to try and tempt him to join WCW with his good old buddies, Hall and Nash, but he could never do that, he could never compete for a company that he once despised and did all he could to put them out of business. HBK describes Shane’s presence in the WWF and on RAW, whilst the owner of WCW, as nauseating and says that when he saw it, he had to come back and show his support for the WWF and Vince McMahon … and that’s why he took Shane’s head off with Sweet Chin Music.

Out comes Shane, for a second time tonight, and suggests that Shawn’s loyalty to Vince is admirable but extremely misguided, Shane says he has seen how Vince has treated him over the years and it’s not something he would be willing to accept. Identifying that three of Michaels’ closest friends - Hall, Nash and now X-Pac - are part of the WCW, Shane says that they all know which organisation is the future of wrestling. Suggesting that the WWF is bleeding and HBK is backing the wrong side, Shane says that this is NO loss to the WCW and questions why they would want a washed-up, old, shadow of a man like Shawn Michaels in their business? As HBK looks up at the ramp angrily, Shane says that HBK took him by surprise tonight but if “you ever find your balls again”, Shane tells him, “I’ll be happy to get in the ring with you and kick your washed up ass!” A challenge laid down by Shane McMahon and he exits, leaving Shawn looking frustrated and contemplative in the ring. Will we ever see a Shawn Michaels vs. Shane McMahon showdown?
SINGLE FALL TAG TEAM MATCH HARDY BOYZ vs. HOLLY COUSINS
In a show of unity, Matt and Jeff work well together to take the fight to their opponents, Crash and Hardcore. Despite their recent differences, the two brothers are right back to their best as a team and they never really let the cousins get a shot in as they take the fight to them. In the end, Matt drops Crash with a Twist of Fate before Jeff heads up and delivers the Swanton Bomb for good measure for the 3 count. No issues, no drama, just an impressive victory for the Hardy Boyz here tonight on RAW!
WINNERS: HARDY BOYZ via pinfall (5:48)
Backstage, we see Edge with his Intercontinental Championship, preparing for action tonight when Christian walks in. Christian criticises Edge for taking on two matches last night and he suggests that it was this decision that cost them the chance to once again be Tag Team Champions. However, as Edge looks frustrated by Christian’s attitude, Christian reveals that he has spoken to Commissioner Regal and there are now added stipulations involved in their match. If Edge, Christian and Van Dam win tonight, they will get another shot at the Dudleys’ Tag Team gold. However, if they lose, Rhyno will get a rematch for Edge’s Intercontinental Championship. Whilst accepting that the chance for them to be Tag Team Champions again appeals to him, Edge does suggest to Christian that he has no right to make decisions like that without consulting him - or Van Dam for that matter. However, when Christian opens his mouth to argue, Edge says that they should go out there and get the job done and they can once again be WWF Tag Team Champions.
WWF WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
SINGLE FALL MATCH LITA (c) vs. IVORY
A competitive match as Lita defends her WWF Women’s Championship for the first time after winning it just last night at Summerslam. After finally finding a way to defeat Chyna, Lita takes on Ivory who believes that she is the one who deserves to be the champion. The experience of Ivory tells early on as she looks to gain control but the high-flying abilities of Lita allow her to hit a springboard crossbody that takes down the challenger. However, when Lita goes for the Twist of Fate, Ivory shoves her face first into the turnbuckle and then slams her to the mat. However, just as it appears Ivory may be set for the title, Lita manages to reverse a DDT attempt and counters with a slam of her own. This allows Lita to head for the top rope and she sails off to hit the Moonsault and get the 3 count. An impressive victory for Lita as she retains the Women’s Championship here tonight on RAW! After the match, the Hardy Boyz, back on the same page of course, hit the ring and embrace with Lita as Team Extreme celebrate their victories here tonight.

As he is preparing and changing for tonight’s main event, the WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin is confronted in the locker room by his three tag team partners tonight: Kurt Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn. Demanding to know why they are getting in his face, Austin says that he is the WWF Champion and they had better follow his lead here tonight against the WCW invaders. However, Angle speaks up and says that, whilst he has no love for either Triple H or The Rock, that walking out on them last night when the nWo appeared was about nothing more than self-preservation. Angle suggests that if the going gets tough tonight or the nWo make another appearance, Austin will do the same to the three of them and that’s not something that they are willing to stand for. Obviously, this does not sit well with Austin who reacts angrily; he suggests that the WWF Champion getting his ass kicked by the nWo would not have been a good look for the WWF and he did the right thing. Dismissing the injuries suffered by HHH and The Rock as minor, Austin says he was protecting the WWF’s image by walking away. However, his words don’t sit well with Big Show as he suggests that Austin was simply being a “coward”, a comment that Billy Gunn agrees with. Suggesting that their words are B-S, Austin vows to prove that he is no coward here tonight when they whip the WCW’s asses and he declares that there is no way that the nWo would ever dare to appear here on RAW tonight.
When RAW returns from a commercial break, we see Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels in the parking lot, HBK about to get into a limo to leave the arena. After Shane’s challenge to Michaels earlier tonight, HBK tells Vince that he has a lot to think about but he will be back here on RAW next week with a decision made about what he’s going to do. Michaels gets into the limo and it drives out of the arena as McMahon watches on.
SINGLE FALL 6-MAN TAG TEAM MATCH
EDGE (c) & CHRISTIAN & ROB VAN DAM vs. DUDLEY BOYZ (c) & RHYNO (c)
Three ECW alumni team up together here tonight as the WWF Tag Team Champions, the Dudley Boyz, and the WWF Hardcore Champion, Rhyno, face off against the WWF Intercontinental Champion, Edge, his partner, Christian, and another former ECW star, Rob Van Dam. However, the match has important stipulations riding on it - will Rhyno get another shot at Edge’s Intercontinental Championship or will Edge and Christian get another shot at the Tag Team Champions? In a back and forth contest that splits over a commercial break, the Dudleys and Rhyno take early control as they use their power advantage to dominate. However, Van Dam - a very popular superstar after his first few weeks in the WWF - turns the tide when he avoids an attempted Gore from Rhyno and counters with Rolling Thunder. From this point, the match is back and forth with the Dudleys hitting a 3D to Christian, Rhyno managing to hit Edge with the Gore but then, after a save by Van Dam, Edge hits Bubba with the Edgeocution DDT as well. However, the critical moment arrives when Van Dam hits the top rope and delivers the 5-Star Frog Splash to Rhyno to get the 3 count. A huge win for Van Dam, Edge and Christian here as they manage to overcome their bigger opponents and, as well as the win, it also means that Edge and Christian will face the Dudleys for the WWF Tag Team Championships in the near future.

Backstage, we see Shane McMahon with his four WCW representatives here tonight. He addresses Test, Eddie and X-Pac and says he is delighted to have them on board and he believes that they will make Team WCW much stronger moving forwards. He also hypes up Booker T after his win over Angle last night and suggests that the disrespect shown towards him by Austin, Angle and Vince is coming back to bite them on the rear end. However, as Booker T speaks about showing the world how strong the WCW is, Shane is interrupted by a phone call. He excuses himself before walking off saying “Yeah man, the plan is set, we’re ready to go …” What is Shane up to as we head towards tonight’s main event?
Backstage, Edge and Christian are celebrating their victory moments ago with their partner, Rob Van Dam. With harmony between Edge and Christian for once, something we haven’t seen so much of in recent weeks, Christian is delighted that they will get another shot at the Tag Team gold but Edge identifies that it was Van Dam who got the pinfall and that he should get rewarded too. Identifying that Van Dam pinned the Hardcore Champion in Rhyno, Edge suggests that it should be Rhyno vs. Rob Van Dam for the Hardcore Championship as well. Fully agreeing with Edge, Van Dam says that he is going to go and see Regal right now and make sure that this happens.
SINGLE FALL MATCH CHRIS JERICHO vs. VAL VENIS
After his recent injuries, Jericho makes his return tonight as he faces former Right to Censor member, Val Venis, here in the ring. Still wearing the white shirt and black trousers even though RTC have died, Venis is looking to cause an upset here tonight and get his in-ring career back on track but that is a tough ask against a fired-up Jericho. Venis manages to drop Jericho with a big spinebuster and he heads for the top rope to hit the move formerly known as the Money Shot. However, Jericho rolls away just in time and Venis collides face first with the mat. Jericho locks on the Walls of Jericho to a dazed Venis and this proves to be enough as Venis taps out. Impressive return to action for Jericho who, before his injuries, was challenging Austin for the WWF Championship. Could Jericho get himself back into the title picture in the next few weeks now that he is back in the WWF?

With the main event imminent, Vince McMahon is in the locker room with the four men representing the WWF here tonight - Austin, Angle, Big Show and Billy Gunn. However, there are a number of other WWF stars in the locker rooms with them as Vince looks to motivate his troops further here, a huge opportunity for the WWF to put the WCW in their place. Identifying that the four of them can put an end to this “WCW crap” here tonight, Vince demands that they go out there and convincingly show that Shane and the WCW are so much more inferior than the World Wrestling Federation. Declaring that the WWF worked hard over the past few years to take down the WCW, Vince says that they need to go out there tonight and stop them before they start rising again. Mindful of how Shane brought the nWo into the arena last night at Summerslam, Vince reassures the four of them that the WWF locker room is ready and waiting, if any other member of the WCW makes an appearance at ringside, including the nWo, they will be there to make them pay.
In a backstage interview, Jonathan Coachman catches up with the returning Chris Jericho and congratulates him on his victory over Val Venis earlier tonight. In response to Coach asking whether Jericho ever spoke to WCW, Y2J says that he never had any thoughts of switching to the WCW, he says that his career has skyrocketed since he left WCW for the WWF - why would he be thinking of going back there? However, Jericho reveals that the way he has been treated in recent weeks - especially by Vince McMahon and his goons - that might make him think twice about being loyal to the WWF. Demanding a chance to speak to Vince McMahon this Friday night on SMACKDOWN, Jericho says he wants clear the air talks with the Chairman to put things right. Jericho finishes with an ominous threat though as he says that if Vince refuses to speak to him or does not take him seriously, he may have second thoughts and give Shane McMahon an opportunity to make a pitch to him …

It’s main event time here tonight, it’s WCW vs. WWF for the first time ever and the Owner of the WCW heads out to ringside looking confident that his men will be victorious. After revealing the secret negotiations of seven WWF superstars here tonight when they walked out and joined WCW, Shane’s intentions to take the fight to the WWF over the coming weeks and months are clear, especially with his father blocking WWF’s path to getting TV deals, sponsors and access to arenas for shows. Stepping through the ropes, Shane receives a mixed reaction - some are cheering him taking the fight to Vince, others are seeing him as a threat to the WWF - and summons for a microphone. He declares that the WWF have no idea just how far the WCW are willing to go to get the recognition that they feel that they deserve. “You see, Dad, if you wanna’ play dirty, if you wanna’ make threats to sponsors and arenas,” Shane informs the fans, “Then you leave me no choice, you leave the WCW no choice, we are gonna’ play dirty too.” Declaring that he is confident in WCW’s future and confident that they will shock the world here tonight, Shane introduces his team to the ring …

Heading out all together, we see the WCW Champion Booker T heading out with three of the defectors from the WWF - Eddie Guerrero, Test and X-Pac. As the four of them head for the ring, there are jeers in the arena for the three men who left the WWF but it seems that Booker T - after his battles with Kurt Angle in recent months - still retains the support of the fans. “Booker T is, of course, the King of the Ring,” J.R. reminds us, “And that is something that does not sit well with Kurt Angle, of course.” As Booker raises the WCW Championship high above his head, there is noticeable tension in the air ahead of one of the biggest RAW main events of all time - it’s Team WWF vs. Team WCW here tonight!

The first member of Team WWF makes his way out into the arena and it is the Olympic Champion, the former WWF Champion, Kurt Angle. Looking annoyed at the way things have worked out tonight, there is no doubting Angle’s loyalty to the WWF and he appears to have taken real offence to the actions of Guerrero, Test and X-Pac here tonight as well as his ongoing issues with Booker T. There are many that feel that Angle should be the man leading the WWF in this fight … can Angle prove that he should be doing just that instead of Austin here tonight?

In recent weeks, these two men have shown themselves to be the trusted allies of Vince McMahon and they head out here tonight looking for further opportunities to enhance their reputation with the boss. The World’s Largest Athlete, 7 foot tall and 500 pounds, Show has had much success in recent months since he teamed up with Billy Gunn, the two of them bringing out the best in each other after feeling underappreciated previously. They meet up with Angle at the foot of the ramp and the three of them step up into the ring together to await their partner …

Accompanied to the ring by the Chairman of the WWF, Vince McMahon, the WWF Champion himself heads out looking determined to prove that he is not the “coward” that some people have made him out to be in recent hours following Summerslam. “Austin has always claimed that he will get in the ring and open a can of whoop ass on anybody,” J.R. reminds us, “But his actions at Summerslam, when he walked out on Triple H and The Rock, typify how he has been since he partnered up with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania!” Whilst no longer a fan of Austin though, J.R. suggests that the WWF need him to be at his best tonight to cut off the WWF, they need the Rattlesnake to fight for them and that’s the bottom line! It appears that Austin is ready to fight and prove himself though as he stomps down to the ring and slides straight in to kick things off!

Making a beeline for the WCW Champion, Booker T, Austin starts throwing right hands at his fellow champion and the WWF vs. WCW in-ring action kicks off with their two champions fighting it out in the middle of the ring. There are glimpses of the old Rattlesnake here as Austin looks furious at the WCW’s attempted invasion and he catches Booker by surprise in the early going, taking him down with the Lou Thesz press and fists of fury. However, Booker is tenacious and he comes back with right hands of his own before he slams Austin down to the mat several times to turn the tide. At this point, we see the first bit of hesitation from Austin as he pauses and looks concerned at the fight shown by the WCW Champion but Angle, showing leadership of his own, tags himself in and he goes after Booker once again.

From this point, following the fast start between Austin and Booker, things slow down a bit as Angle ends up getting teamed up on by Guerrero, Test and X-Pac. Frequent tags from the new WCW trio allow them to take the fight to Angle and they manage to get the upper hand over him to the delight of their new boss, Shane. When Angle manages to tag out to Billy Gunn, this doesn’t change things much as he struggles against the willingness of the WCW stars to do whatever it takes here tonight. However, with eight men, all fired up, in the match, it soon becomes wilder and wilder and it’s no surprise when the referee starts to lose control of things. Austin and Angle end up brawling with Test and Booker T in the crowd as they try to keep the upper hand over WCW and we then see Eddie Guerrero, despite a brave effort against the Big Show, get hit with a CHOKE SLAM! THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! Back in the ring, the two legal men are Billy Gunn and X-Pac, former friends of course, and X-Pac manages to drop his former partner with a Spinning Heel Kick to the back of the head. However, X-Pac is in danger as Big Show steps over the top rope once again and it’s two on one! Big Show grabs X-Pac by the throat to the delight of the fans … but then he releases him and grabs Billy by the throat instead! WHAT THE HELL IS BIG SHOW DOING? CHOKE SLAM TO BILLY GUNN! BIG SHOW CHOKE SLAMS HIS OWN PARTNER TO THE MAT! Realising what is happening, Kurt Angle rushes back to the ring and slides into the ring to try and save things but Big Show grabs him by the throat as well … CHOKE SLAM TO ANGLE! As the fans watch on in angry disbelief, Austin now rushes back towards the ring … and he looks up at the Big Show … and he stops and backs away, despite Vince McMahon desperately trying to tell him to get in the ring and save the match. However, it seems that Austin is intimidated by the Big Show who is waiting for him … X-FACTOR! X-PAC HITS THE X-FACTOR TO BILLY GUNN! He makes the cover over his former friend as Big Show continues to threaten Austin … 1 … 2 … 3! WCW wins the first battle here tonight on RAW!

Broken bodies lay everywhere … Angle is down on the outside of the ring, trying to recover from a devastating Choke Slam, Billy Gunn is unconscious in the ring from the Choke Slam / X-Factor combination. Even though the WCW were successful here tonight, Eddie Guerrero’s body is strewn between the broken Spanish announce table and Test is down and out in the stage area after his brawl with Austin and Angle. Booker T helps Test to his feet as Big Show stands tall in the ring with X-Pac, glaring down at Austin who still refuses to get in the ring and confront the big man. As Shane McMahon gets into the ring and embraces Big Show, it all becomes clear - Big Show is another WWF superstar who is defecting to the WCW! The WWF is bleeding big time … and the WWF Champion is doing nothing about it! Eight superstars defected to the WCW, two more taken out by the nWo … what will the WCW do next as they look to destroy the morale of the WWF?

After a mass exodus from the WWF to the WCW on RAW last Monday night, Vince McMahon has vowed that the WWF will be ready this Friday night for SMACKDOWN and that the WCW will NOT interfere in tonight’s show. However, with the roster depleted, it remains to be seen whether the WWF is now more susceptible than ever to an invasion from the WCW. One man who returns to the WWF tonight is Triple H, along with Vince’s daughter Stephanie, and he is said to be irate with the way he was brutally attacked at the conclusion of Summerslam last Sunday night. In addition to the ongoing issues that are being caused by Shane McMahon’s WCW, we will also see two titles on the line tonight - the Dudleys defending the Tag Team gold against Edge and Christian, Rhyno defending the Hardcore title against Rob Van Dam - as well as the return of Viscera to action as well. Will the WWF be able to rebound from a devastating Monday Night RAW and prove that they remain the top entity in the wrestling industry? Or will the WCW be able to once again wreak havoc on WWF as Shane looks to get eyes on them once again?

ANNOUNCE TEAM: Michael Cole & Tazz

SMACKDOWN kicks off with the Chairman of the World Wrestling Federation, Vince McMahon, defiantly heading for the ring with a blunt message for the WCW and Shane McMahon: tonight, there will be NO involvement from WCW in the show, all WCW’s so-called superstars have been banned from entering the Pepsi Center and security has been tightened to ensure that SMACKDOWN can run unimpeded as planned. However, before Vince can run down his son’s company, the music of his son-in-law, Triple H hits and the former WWF Champion - and one of the men beaten down by the nWo last Sunday - makes his return from minor injuries. With HHH pissed off to say the least, he gets in the ring and demands that Vince make an exception to his No WCW rule and allows Hogan, Hall and Nash to enter the arena so that they can get their asses kicked. Unfortunately for Hunter though, Vince is in no mood to relent and he informs The Game that he will not be allowing any WCW wrestler the chance to enter a WWF arena here tonight. As Vince exits, Triple H says that he has another man in mind for an ass-kicking as well … and that man is the WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin. Triple H says that he has watched the closing moments of Summerslam back and it is clear that Austin is a “damn coward” with a yellow streak running right down his back. Hunter suggests that it appears that Shane and the WCW are more than intent on launching an invasion and that the WWF needs a leader that is willing to fight, a leader who is willing to stand up to the invaders and a leader who can lead by example, not a coward like Austin. This brings out the Rattlesnake who stomps down to the ring looking thoroughly pissed off at the words of the man who he was Tag Team Champions with only a few months ago. However, Austin has second thoughts about getting into the ring with HHH and instead chooses to retreat back to the stage area where he repeats his explanation that he was protecting the image of the WWF by not allowing their WWF Champion to look weak. HHH accuses Austin of talking “bullshit” and he reminds the WWF Champion that the entire world saw, on RAW last Monday, that Austin was once again running scared of the Big Show in the main event. Suggesting that he is the true leader of the WWF, Austin says that he is not a coward. However, HHH, unconvinced, suggests to Austin that he can prove that to be the case by facing him right here tonight in the middle of this very ring with the WWF Championship on the line. Although he initially appears reluctant, Austin is eventually goaded into it and tonight’s main event will be a huge one as Austin faces Triple H for the WWF Championship!
WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
SINGLE FALL TAG TEAM MATCH DUDLEY BOYZ (c) vs. EDGE (c) & CHRISTIAN
After they teamed up with Rob Van Dam in a 6-man tag on RAW to defeat the Dudleys and Rhyno, Edge and Christian get another opportunity to become WWF Tag Team Champions once again here tonight in the opening match of the night. Despite the small issues that they have faced in recent weeks, Edge and Christian work together well and take the fight to the Dudleys, maybe fearing that they may be out of the title picture for a while if they fail to win tonight. However, the Dudleys have no problem taking shortcuts to gain the upper hand over their challengers and they manage to isolate Edge, the Intercontinental Champion of course, to the frustration of Christian. When the referee gets bumped though, the champions opt to bring in two tables as they look to deliver punishment whilst they can. After setting up a table though, the Dudleys’ attempts to powerbomb Edge through it fail when he counters by dropping D-Von with the Edgeocution DDT before hitting the Spear to Bubba Ray. Unfortunately, the referee is still struggling up though and Christian takes the chance to tag himself in before looking to hit the Unprettier. However, unseen by the referee, Rhyno rushes down the ramp and into the ring to hit a vicious Gore to Christian before he begins brawling with Edge at ringside as well. With Edge busy with the Man Beast, the referee gets back up just in time to see the Dudleys setting Christian up and dropping him with the 3-D for the victory! The Dudleys retain the WWF Tag Team Championship thanks to a huge assist from the Hardcore Champion, Rhyno! As the champions retreat with the Man Beast, it appears that Christian is not pleased with his brother, suggesting that he should have been there to make the save …
WINNERS: DUDLEY BOYZ via pinfall (8:18) to retain the WWF Tag Team Championships
In a backstage interview with Lilian Garcia, Billy Gunn speaks out and is very critical of the decision made last Monday by his “former friends”, Big Show and X-Pac. Suggesting that the two of them should remember that it was the WWF who made them both household names, not the WCW who just destroyed their careers, Billy urges them to rethink their decision and to come back home where they belong. However, Billy’s words are not sitting well with Kurt Angle who walks into shot and suggests that his words are hollow. Blaming Billy for the loss to WCW in the main event of RAW - Billy was the one pinned by X-Pac of course - Angle suggests that he has concerns that Gunn will walk out and join WCW too at some point, that he is waiting for the opportune moment to jump ship. Gunn doesn’t take that comment well and gets right into Angle’s face, suggesting that the two of them get in the ring tonight and he can prove his loyalty to the WWF by kicking his Olympic ass. Angle accepts the challenge and vows to break Gunn’s ankle; he suggests that Billy won’t get a chance to “walk” out on the WWF!
SINGLE FALL MATCH ALBERT vs. WILLIAM REGAL
After impressing on Monday night against The Undertaker on RAW, Albert finds himself in a new situation here on SMACKDOWN as he has the fans behind him as he faces the WWF Commissioner, William Regal. Despite the dastardly deeds of Regal, as usual, Albert manages to overpower him and it appears that he is building momentum towards a victory when there is a commotion in the arena … the WCW Tag Team Champions, Chuck Palumbo and Sean O’Haire come through the crowd, leap the barrier and barrage into both Regal and Albert from behind. Albert falls through the ropes from the impact whilst Regal is at the mercy of Palumbo and O’Haire, the two of them seemingly on a mission to make a point by destroying the Commissioner. Palumbo lays Regal out with a stuff Superkick and the two of them stand over the fallen Commissioner, continuing to lay the boots to him. Albert climbs through the ropes and looks to prevent the beatdown of Regal, showing his loyalty to the WWF, but he is unable to overcome the odds and is also beaten down before O’Haire heads for the top rope and drops a Flying Elbow to Albert. As Palumbo and O’Haire exit back through the crowd, we see Vince McMahon watching a monitor backstage, anger in his eyes again as the WCW make their impact on the WWF once more.
WINNER: NO CONTEST (4:21)
As he said he would on RAW, Chris Jericho heads out on SMACKDOWN all set to confront Vince McMahon over the way he was injured a few weeks ago. After running Stone Cold Steve Austin close for the WWF Championship at King of the Ring and Vengeance, Jericho - suspected by Vince to be contemplating defecting to the WCW - ordered Mark Henry and D’Lo Brown to take him out, ironic considering those two men have now indeed defected to Shane McMahon’s WCW. Jericho demands that Vince come out and face up to him but the Chairman does not follow orders and he all remains quiet on the staging area. After Vince defies Jericho once more, Y2J’s patience runs out and he suggests that if Vince doesn’t head out right now, he will go and speak with Shane McMahon … and this proves successful as the Chairman, admittedly looking annoyed at Jericho’s demands, heads down to the ring. Initially, Vince tries to snarl at Jericho but he is quickly put in his place by the former Intercontinental Champion who tells his boss to “shut the hell up” before demanding that he listen carefully. Reiterating that he never spoke to WCW or Shane McMahon and that he has never had any intention of leaving the WWF, Jericho says that he has been loyal to McMahon’s company and that he deserves an apology for the way he was treated like a dog following Vengeance. However, Vince refuses to apologise; he claims that he did what appeared at the time to be best for business. Suggesting that he was protecting the WWF from a potentially devastating situation, Vince says that he would do it again in a heartbeat. Laughing at this, Jericho suggests that Vince set his goons on him on the say-so of one man, the WWF Champion, Austin. Claiming that Austin sparked these rumours not to protect the WWF but to protect himself, Jericho says that we’ve all seen who Austin’s priority is in recent days and he once again demands an apology from Vince. When Vince again refuses, Jericho says that he has been left with no choice and reveals that he is now open to hearing from Shane McMahon to discuss his future. As Jericho goes to leave the ring though, Vince relents - a look of concern now on his face at the prospect of losing one of his biggest stars - and he accepts that he got it wrong about Jericho quitting the WWF. Whilst he never actually apologises, Vince admits his mistake and asks Jericho what he can do to make it up to him. Pausing before leaving the ring, Jericho is thoughtful for a moment … and then suggests he has an idea. He informs Vince that he can “prove that he is sorry” by adding him to tonight’s WWF Championship match between Austin and HHH, making it a Triple Threat for the gold. It’s clear that Vince is reluctant to do this but, after Jericho looks set to walk out once again, he relents and adds Jericho to the match. As if tonight’s main event wasn’t big enough, it is now a Triple Threat between Austin, Triple H and Chris Jericho for the WWF Championship!
SINGLE FALL MATCH RAVEN vs. REY MYSTERIO
After an impressive debut on RAW last Monday, Rey Mysterio is back in action tonight as he makes his first appearance on SMACKDOWN against former Hardcore Champion, Raven. The speed and agility of the high-flying Mexican proves to be a match for Raven and, following a Hurricanrana, Mysterio looks to be set for victory. However, the former WCW star’s presence here in the WWF, according to rumours that Michael Cole has heard, has not sat well with those in the WCW and proof of this arrives in the form of Chavo and Eddie Guerrero. With WCW stars once again coming through the crowd despite the tightened security, Los Guerreros - as Tazz names them - hit the ring and attack Mysterio in front of the referee who immediately signals for the bell. The focus of the Guerreros attack is on Mysterio as they pay little attention to Raven; Eddie locks Mysterio in a Texas Cloverleaf while Chavo lays boots to his masked head. When Eddie suggests that they rip Rey’s mask off his head, we see the APA come flying down towards the ring, anger in their eyes, to make the save. However, Los Guerreros are not hanging around to get involved in a brawl with Faarooq and Bradshaw and they quickly exit the ring and head back through the crowd. As the WCW team exit once again, the APA glare after them - how many more times will we see the WCW ruin WWF matches here tonight on SMACKDOWN?

Backstage, Christian is with Edge in the locker room lamenting their failure to capture the WWF Tag Team Championships from the Dudley Boyz earlier in the night. Attempting to reassure his brother, Edge says that it was the actions of Rhyno that cost them and he suggests that they speak with Commissioner Regal about it. However, Christian doesn’t listen to his brother’s words and accuses him of not caring about their team again. As Edge looks exasperated at this comment once again, Christian says that he has changed since he impressed at the King of the Ring, he is now the Intercontinental Champion and he cares more about that than recapturing the Tag Team gold. Edge attempts to argue back at the accusations but Christian, jealousy clearly all over his face, shoves Edge away and storms out of the locker room. Are we witnessing the end of one of the WWF’s greatest tag teams?
SINGLE FALL MATCH RIKISHI vs. VISCERA
Making his return to the WWF, Viscera heads out for a battle of the big men as he faces the popular Samoan, Rikishi. With both men’s offence usually centred around dominating their opponents with their sheer size, this match proves to be the proverbial irresistible force up against the immovable object and the two big men cancel each other out. However, Rikishi secures the advantage when he manages to take Viscera off his feet and sends him backwards into a seated position in the corner. As the crowd come alive, Rikishi looks to deliver the Stinkface to Viscera but the 450-pounder escapes just in time to the disappointment of the crowd. However, as Rikishi protests at Viscera leaving the ring, Big Boss Man and Bull Buchanan - two more WCW stars coming through the crowd, both dressed in black - appear in the ring! When Rikishi turns around, Boss Man jams his nightstick right into the throat area of the Samoan and then Bull drops him with a DDT; the referee signals for the bell to end the match. As they begin kicking lumps out of Rikishi on the mat though, Viscera steps back through the ropes and confronts the two of them … but then he turns back and delivers a huge Big Splash to Rikishi, squashing him down on the mat. Realisation dawns on the fans that Viscera is another WWF superstar that is defecting to the WCW, 450 pounds of power joining Shane McMahon’s army as the WWF continues to bleed!

After his disagreement with Edge earlier tonight, we see Christian with his bags exiting the arena via the parking lot; he is muttering to himself and looking annoyed about the way the evening has gone. As he does, his cell phone rings and he answers it - he arranges a meeting with somebody later tonight and says that he is now willing to “listen to what you’ve got to say”. Who is Christian meeting and what is the meeting about?
Backstage, an angry-looking Vince McMahon has demanded to see the arena’s head of security due to the chaos being caused here tonight by the invading WCW personnel. Describing the fact that several matches have already been disrupted by WCW as “embarrassing” for him, Vince demands that the security sort things out and keep the WCW out of the arena. Before the head of security can respond, Triple H barges into the room and shoves him aside, getting right in the face of his father-in-law. With Stephanie right by her husband’s side, Hunter suggests that Vince has lost his mind by adding Jericho to the title match later tonight. “Are you trying to piss me off?” HHH asks Vince before stating that he doesn’t care how many men he is facing tonight, he is going to kick both Austin and Jericho’s ass and walk out as the WWF Champion. Fearing a mutiny, Vince pleads with Hunter that he needs the WWF superstars to work together to fend off the threat being posed by WCW. However, Triple H isn’t interested in working with Austin and claims that he isn’t a team player, that all he is interested in is keeping hold of the WWF Championship. As Vince tries to persuade HHH to stay calm, The Game says he isn’t interested in working with Austin and if Vince tries anything funny here tonight, he’ll have no problem kicking his ass as well. As HHH storms off, Stephanie gives her father a conflicted look before following her husband - will Triple H become the new WWF Champion here tonight?
WWF HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP
HARDCORE RULES MATCH RHYNO (c) vs. ROB VAN DAM
After pinning Rhyno on RAW last Monday in the 6-man tag match, Van Dam tonight gets his opportunity to challenge for the Man Beast’s Hardcore Championship here on SMACKDOWN. With both men ECW alumni, the two of them throw everything at each other from the outset, Rhyno making use of a kendo stick and Van Dam utilising the steel chair for a Van Daminator. A big turning point comes when, after a short period of dominating his challengers, Rhyno charges at Van Dam looking to hit the Gore but Van Dam dodges it; Rhyno collides shoulder first with the ring post. This allows RVD to slam Rhyno to the mat before hitting Rolling Thunder and it appears that a title change may be coming. However, as Van Dam leaps to the top rope, the Dudleys race down the ramp looking to repay the favour from earlier in the night when Rhyno helped them retain their titles. As Bubba leaps onto the apron and distracts the referee, D-Von shoves Van Dam’s feet out from under him and he crotches himself on the top turnbuckle. With champion and challenger both struggling, the referee tries to eject Bubba; this allows D-Von to slide a wooden table into the ring which he then follows and sets up in the centre of the ring. Ignoring the referee, Bubba shoves him aside and joins D-Von as they drag RVD off the buckles looking to finish him off. However, as they set up for the 3-D, Edge races out intent on revenge for Rhyno’s actions earlier tonight as well. As the Dudleys go to hit the 3-D, Edge slides into the ring and barrages into Bubba so that Van Dam can counter D-Von into a spike DDT. However, as RVD struggles up, Rhyno charges at him again for a second attempt at the Gore … but Edge cuts him off with a stiff kick to the side of the head! With Rhyno down and in trouble, Van Dam leaps to the top rope once again … and hits the Five Star Frog Splash to the Man Beast! As Edge wards off any threat from the Dudleys, Van Dam makes the cover and gets the 3 count to become the new Hardcore Champion!
WINNER: ROB VAN DAM via pinfall (6:55) to become the new WWF Hardcore Champion
In a backstage interview with Jonathan Coachman, Faarooq and Bradshaw - set to face off against the Brothers of Destruction, the Hardys and the Hollys later tonight in a #1 contenders match - are not pleased with the way the WCW are invading tonight’s show. Bradshaw, despite admitting that they will be going all out to win their match tonight, suggests that if any of the “WCW freeloaders” show up to interfere in the match, they will make them pay. Rallying the WWF troops, Bradshaw suggests that the WWF superstars need to work together to take out the threat of the WCW and prove once and for all who the superior company is.
SINGLE FALL MATCH BILLY GUNN vs. KURT ANGLE
After their earlier confrontation, Billy Gunn and Kurt Angle clash in the next match with both men intent on claiming a big win here tonight. For Angle, who blames Gunn for the WWF’s loss to WCW on RAW, it is about sending a message that despite his recent issues with Booker T, he remains one of the top stars here in the WWF. For Gunn, it’s about showing that he is not to blame for the loss on RAW and shoving Angle’s words down his throat. From the start, Billy controls things as he goes all out early but the wrestling abilities of Angle allow him to stem the tide and ground his opponent. After an even few minutes, Angle manages to counter an attempted Fame Asser to hit the Angle Slam before he follows up with the Ankle Lock to get the submission victory. Despite a brave effort from Gunn, it’s the former WWF Champion who emerges victorious but that doesn’t appear to be enough for the Olympian. He locks the Ankle Lock back on Billy and refuses to release it, referees and officials attempting to force him to stop. When Angle continues to refuse though, Road Dogg - Gunn’s former New Age Outlaws partner, of course - races out to the ring and makes the save by attacking Angle from behind. Not wanting any part of a fired-up Road Dogg, Angle rolls out of the ring to safety and retreats whilst the Dogg checks in on his former partner.
WINNER: KURT ANGLE via submission (4:48)
Backstage, Stephanie McMahon has left her husband to get ready for the main event and she is seeking out her father, Vince McMahon, in his office. Attempting to placate her father after the stinging criticism from Triple H earlier, Stephanie suggests that her husband is obsessed with becoming the WWF Champion again and is willing to do whatever it takes to walk out with the title tonight. Admitting that Austin and Jericho are the two men HHH despises most in the WWF, Stephanie suggests that Vince should allow tonight’s title match to pass and let HHH, Austin and Jericho get it out of their systems. Vince agrees and says the best man will walk out as the WWF Champion and then everybody can get on the same page to defeat the WCW invaders once and for all.
#1 CONTENDERS 4-CORNERS TAG TEAM ELIMINATION MATCH
APA vs. BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION vs. HARDY BOYZ vs. HOLLY COUSINS
Four of the top tag teams here in the WWF clash in a 4-Corners Elimination match, all looking to get their opportunity to become the WWF Tag Team Champions with a shot against the Dudley Boyz. However, the power and strength of the Brothers of Destruction threatens to overshadow the other three teams; they are dominant in the early stages and it doesn’t take long for Kane to hit the Choke Slam to Crash Holly for the first elimination. The Hardys and the APA work together to attempt to nullify the threat of the monstrous brothers before going up against each other as well. As the tension rises - with no sign of the WCW interfering in this one - Bradshaw hits the Clothesline from Hell out of nowhere to Jeff Hardy and picks up the second elimination. With the APA and the Brothers of Destruction remaining, it’s power up against power now as the APA look to cause a bit of an upset. Faarooq manages to drop Kane with a spinebuster before following up with the Dominator but it only manages to get him a 2 count. When The Undertaker moments later manages to kick out of the Clothesline from Hell by Bradshaw, it appears that the APA are running out of ideas; Undertaker manages to hit the Last Ride to Faarooq and this proves enough for the 3 count. Kane and The Undertaker pick up the win, they will be the next challengers to the Dudley Boyz!

After a commercial break, an advert airs advertising the fact that The Rock will be returning from the injuries sustained at Summerslam this Monday night on RAW! How will The Rock react to what happened at Summerslam with the nWo?
As Edge is leaving the arena, The Coach catches up with him and asks him if he has heard anything from Christian since we saw him leaving earlier tonight. Edge admits to being concerned over Christian’s recent attitude and who he may have been arranging a meeting with but he is sure that when Christian listens to him later, he will be able to reassure him that he has nothing to worry about.
Ahead of the main event, we see a number of shots of different entry and exit points into the arena - backstage and elsewhere, inside and outside - where there is an increased security presence to prevent the WCW from entering the arena and disrupting the WWF Championship match. We also see that many WWF superstars are guarding doors and entrance areas backstage, including the APA, the Dudley Boyz, Albert, Kurt Angle, William Regal and more, whilst Vince McMahon is watching a monitor nervously. Will the main event pass off without WCW interference? Who will walk out the WWF Champion?

As he spits water into the air on the ring apron, HHH has the fans on his side here, the majority of whom simply want to see somebody take the WWF Championship away from Austin …

Looking angry at having to defend his title here tonight, the paranoid and - according to some - selfish WWF Champion makes his way out into the arena, followed by his wife, Debra. However, as he stomps down the ramp, Austin changes his mind about Debra being out with him and he orders her to return backstage to the annoyance of the fans. As Austin approaches the ring, he is glared at by both challengers who have both got revenge on mind here tonight. Can Austin overcome the odds and retain the WWF Championship? Or will he finally lose the title that he sold his soul for at WrestleMania X7?

In the early stages, HHH and Jericho only have eyes for Austin as both of them look to make him pay; Austin’s selfish attitude in recent days catching up with him as he takes a beating from the two challengers. However, it doesn’t take too long for Jericho and The Game to turn against each other as well, their old rivalry boiling back up again and HHH looking to make Y2J pay for all the insulting words he has used towards his wife. The action is back and forth, control over the match switching over and over, near falls a plenty as we approach the conclusion of the match. However, in the end, it is Triple H who gains the upper hand as he hits a back body drop to Jericho that sends him over the top rope and crashing down on the outside. Austin looks to take advantage of HHH being distracted but The Game is ready for him and kicks him in the gut to set up for the Pedigree. Just like Summerslam’s Triple Threat, HHH has Austin set up and he manages to drop the WWF Champion with the PEDIGREE! TRIPLE H HITS THE PEDIGREE TO AUSTIN! However, just as HHH is looking to make the cover and become WWF Champion, there is a commotion as Big Show and X-Pac come rushing down the ramp! Spotting his former DX buddy, X-Pac, coming, HHH meets him with a big right hand but then Big Show approaches him from behind … CHOKE SLAM! BIG SHOW HITS THE CHOKE SLAM TO TRIPLE H AND THE REFEREE SIGNALS FOR THE BELL!

The cameras show that Shane McMahon is also at ringside as Big Show and X-Pac interfere in tonight’s main event; he is directing traffic and Big Show drags Triple H back off the mat and hits another CHOKE SLAM! A SECOND CHOKE SLAM TO TRIPLE H! Angry at the match being stopped, Chris Jericho is back in the ring but X-Pac catches him coming with a Spinning Heel Kick before another CHOKE SLAM! CHOKE SLAM TO JERICHO! On the stage area, we see Austin - who has conveniently escaped once again - watching on with his WWF Championship in his hand. With Triple H down and out in the ring, Big Show and X-Pac drag Jericho out of the ring and position him on the announce desk as Shane scales the ropes … FLYING ELBOW DROP! SHANE McMAHON HITS JERICHO WITH A FLYING ELBOW THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! With Triple H broken in the ring after a series of Choke Slams and Jericho buried in the rubble of the Spanish announce table, Shane, X-Pac and Big Show stand over Y2J with a smirk on their faces. A number of WWF superstars, led by the APA, come rushing down the ramp to get revenge of the WCW invaders but they leap over the barricade and escape through the crowd instead … Another WWF main event, a WWF Championship match, ruined by the WCW! How will the WWF manage to turn the tide of momentum against Shane’s invaders?

I thought the opening segment here was pretty solid. Vince not wanting WCW wrestlers on the show tonight makes sense, whilst Triple H’s motivation for wanting the NWO here is pretty obvious. The words on Austin were good to, and Stone Cold coming down to the ring, but then backing up continues this coward gimmick. I always thought after Austin was an as kicker for so long, that him being a cowardly heel was strange. Anyway, whilst the booking of Austin doesn’t do it for me, would prefer him to be ass kicker heel, not kisser, we’ve got a big time main event scheduled for tonight now and I’m all for that.

Tag title is booked exactly as it should be. Dudleyz get the win, and Christian finds a stupid reason to blame Edge to continue their friction. Good stuff. And I’m always down to see Rhyno just destroy people to.

Honestly, Billy pleading with Show and Pac to come back makes him come across like a bit of a loser. With this war, and the general hatred between WWF/WCW, I’d probably prefer him to be mad at them, especially after they beat him up on Raw. The Angle/Gunn interaction was good though, with in fighting amongst the war adding to the whole scene.

Albert/Regal would have been fun. A shame we didn’t get a finish but I can understand why. Palumbo and O’Haire invading and giving WCW their moment makes sense.

Jericho/Vince segment was awesome. Love Jericho really hanging it over Vince here, and McMahon is to stubborn to give in, until the last possible second. I get the feeling Jericho might regret getting thrown into the main event tonight, but we’ll see. This was a good segment though.

Hmm, so in this universe Mysterio is a WWF guy and Eddie Guerrero is a WCW guy? Strange lol. Glad to see at least this time somebody from team WWF in The APA were ready for a WCW invasion.

Another nice segment here to continue the issues with Edge and Christian. Enjoying this so far.

Eh, Rikishi and Viscera ending in MORE WCW interference was the first time it felt a bit much. Surely by now Vince would have the troops on standby and have further protections in that place. On that note, probably feels like we are missing a segment somewhere here of Vince reacting and concocting a plan to retaliate/defend the WWF.

Christian potentially going to WCW? Or is he just finding a new tag partner? I look forward to finding out.

Funny that I mentioned the Vince stuff earlier, and now we get him checking in with security. Maybe a little to late for my liking, but I’m glad you had this in here. Makes sense. Triple H fuming over Jericho being added to his title match is the typical reaction here, and hypes just what will go down in the main event nicely.

Rhyno/RVD is a fun Hardcore match for sure, and no issues with the result here. RVD had a pretty awesome run as Hardcore champ in real life, so hopefully you can do something similar or better that. Dudleyz/Edge involvement here again, for lack of a better term, made sense after what happened earlier. Edge/Rhyno will be coming at some point I assume.

APA segment hyping their match and bad mouthing WCW for invading was completely acceptable.

The right move to have Kurt go over Billy here. Didn’t necessarily expect the intervention from Road Dogg here. I don’t mind these two as The Outlaws again, as they don’t have much else to offer in singles.

Stephanie and Vince segment was fine to further hype the main event.

Brothers of Destruction become number one contenders is fine.

Yes, this is what I wanted to see. Love that now the wrestlers and not only security guards are looking after entry to the building and stuff.

Main event was fine until the ending with Austin continuing to look in over his head, and Triple H looking badass. WCW getting in so easily and being able to do SO much damage, before WWF intervened was odd. I thought WWF were basically on stand by now. Has to be some sort of swerve in regards to how they got into the building otherwise this doesn’t make a lot of sense. I’m definitely intrigued to see the fallout from another big statement by WCW.

An okay show. I know it’s hard early on when establishing but there’s only so many times WCW guys can appear from nowhere and interfere before it becomes a bit same/same. Intrigued to see how you advance this in the coming weeks, without getting stuck in this cycle. Seems you’re off to a solid start.

Not a bad start. It's a fascinating time to choose from, although I can't say I was a big fan of the time jump between Judgment Day and SummerSlam. At least the main angle piqued at SummerSlam, with the storied Triple Threat match between Steve Austin, The Rock and Triple H. I liked the spin of the New World Order coming in, I had a similar idea in mind almost as a "calm before the storm" kind of thing, at the climax of the WCW Invasion Angle. I think there does remain a bit of jump between the main event players and the prosperous undercarders, who really need the top guys to leave/go out injured in exchange for a push to the top tier.

You're trying some interesting things with Eddie Guerrero, Test and X-Pac aligning with WCW, and Booker T of course is an exception to the undercard struggle in this period. That said, with Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall adding to the fire it can make for a tight squeeze. I also see you've kept around the likes of Viscera, brought back Road Dogg, and have introduced Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio is an obvious decision, a year earlier than planned.

I definitely think at this point Edge and Christian as a tandem have more than run their course, and the tag team division's stagnation spans from The Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz and E&C rivalry that, while historic - the booking had exhausted every possible combination of these guys, in varying match types. Big Show as the latest defection is but another heel turn without much consequence. At best, he's a heater for the growing WCW contingent.

The format is good, and the writing is skillful. The graphics are eye-catching in places, but the decision to move SmackDown! to Fridays at its' peak is quite mind-boggling. Some of the championship graphics are also inaccurate for the period, but that's a minute detail.

Still, I'm glad to see less jumping from pay-per-view to pay-per-view, as so much happened on RAW and SmackDown on a weekly basis in this period. We've got a good storyline hook, now it's time to watch it progress.

The Invasion was an awesome time, at the time, but yeah, it's such a fun place to reimagine and after THAT king of the ring show I am on board. Really well booked throughout, and I love the formatting and style of the show. KING BOOKAH~! already is epic, as is a likely feud with Kurt. Jericho getting the visual submission over Austin was awesome too, would love to see a proper Jericho title run, BUT WHO'S SIDE IS HE ON!?

At Vengeance we have Too Cool here, although GM Sexay had been fired in real life due to bringing drugs over the border. I totally forgot ShowGunn's were a thing, and I'm rooting for them! Albert as champion confused me until I realised it had obviously occurred on the Raw/Smackdown between KOTR and Vengeance, very happy to see Edge win this and have a run as IC champ. Love the Jeff/Matt/Eddie match - brother vs brother is always a tough one to run with, but tensions being teased and built worked well here. RVD is getting the obligatory Regal feud before a main event push which I like. HHH and Vince getting the win here to get their heat back is solid, although I expected run in's and shenanigans for WCW to win. Angle runs in, and it's almost like WCW are the babyfaces? It's a tough line to tread for sure. Love the HHH/Austin/Jericho situation, and whilst I'd love a Jericho title run I can see why Austin v HHH is the money feud here.

Jeff/Matt at Summerslam is a MOTN candidate waiting to happen. TLC too? Good times, although harder to have the relentless spots you can have with a multi man. It's always tough with Matt and Jeff because we just want to cheer both of them on, but at this point Jeff was definitely worthy of a midcard title run and the victory here - even if we all hope the brothers reunite eventually. Looks like Regal found his allies in Big Show and Billy Gunn, hopefully this leads to a good run for the trio. Chyna handing the torch to Lita is a great Summerslam moment, although it's not like you'll have many options that you can build a legit women's divison around. E&C and the IC title match were booked perfectly with Edge overestimating what he can commit to, ultimately letting Christian down, and sowing some discord there. He gets the win and then Rhyno smashes him up post match. Holy shit Test beat RVD... I don't know how I feel about that. Angle/Booker is great and I wish we'd had the full show write-ups for it but this was solidly booked too. Angle couldn't possibly get the win and throw the belt in the trash, and Booker winning makes him really strong. SHAWN! Okay, you're bringing the big guns for the WWF...I like it. Sweet Chin Music to give Vince the victory over Shane is good and not a minute too late! Oh, The Rock's back... well, this is the triple threat match we never got to see, and it's a big one for sure. Austin v Rock v HHH...and my dear lord you went big on this one. I was just getting caught up with all the nearfalls and then BOOM, here come three masked men to ruin Vince McMahon's day. HHH turning babyface and Austin hightailing it were exactly what this segment needed, and immediately the stakes have been ramped ALL THE WAY UP! Great ending to that show.

RAW #1
I found it weird that a match between Regal/Tajiri would precede the big Vince promo, but what a promo it was. It should have started the show, it was an excellent call to arms - even if seven wrestlers immediately switched sides. The ending felt a bit rushed but it was still incredibly effective. Also, I love Austin's paranoid character, especially at the old favourite Shawn Michaels being back in town. A natural feud right there should Austin defect.

Yay, the Hardyz reunite! And they get the win. Happy days. Also Lita is back in the fold after she dispatches of Ivory easily enough, although I wonder what the next step is for Team Extreme as they dont have any natural rivals at this point until more WCW guys come in.

Love the Jericho situation too as he should by all rights defect to WCW, although the main event scene is crowded on both sides of the aisle, so it's really interesting with him positioned in the middle of it all.

I sense the end is coming for Edge and Christian, with one of them defecting perhaps? Feels like you almost have to line up the babyfaces and heels on opposing teams during this war. Nice to see them get another match for the belts but I fear that may be the catalyst that sends Christian over the edge.

Big Show is the eleventh man!! I didn't see that coming. I presumed we'd get a false finish with some of the recent wwf traitors running in to cement their new WCW status. There's a lot going on and I think you may have bust your nut too early with some of the stories, but if you can sustain this pace then you've got a hell of a program. I was enthralled throughout, with one turn after another with a spattering of matches inbetween. This was a great ready.

Smackdown #1
Austin v HHH to main event Smackdown is huge, I'm shocked it isn't in a steel cage as was all the rage back then.

Yep, no shocker that the dudleyz retain, I suspect this E&C break up isnt far off now. Rhyno being a destroyer is always on my BtB bingo card.

Welp.. that no-WCW ban didnt last very long. Palumbo and O'Haire are big and ripped, but they feel like after thought roster-bulking talent, so will be interesting to see how you position them here.

Jericho forcing Vince's hand to get into the title match later on is good shit.

Ahh, it's the roster-bolstering goons coming down and ruining every match! I guess it works because security can only remember so many faces and these guys can get in under the radar. APA make the attempted save and immediately we're getting the starts of lots of potential matches. Viscera is a big big man and he is uber scary, but by 2000 Vis felt a bit saturated. If you can rebuild him back into the monster he should have always been, he can be super effective.

I like how you're booking Rhyno and RVD and actually making the Hardcore title feel like it matters. You've done that with all the belts to be fair, but this one feels particularly well done because someone as big a name as RVD, and someone as dangerous as Rhyno, are both fighting over it and it's not just an afterthought or tossed into a Hardcore Battle Royale etc etc like it would have been a year prior. Hope this isnt the end of the road for RVD and Rhyno feuding.

Well, yeah, course Kane and Taker are gonna walk that four team match. It's almost unfair to everybody else in the tag division with these two monster's around.

Austin continually retaining via DQ and never being hit is really some good booking, but also he HAS to defect to WCW now. He can't keep getting away with it! WCW again look super strong, although perhaps the WWF guys need a few more coffee's to wake up and react to these run-ins a little bit quicker. Feels like a lot happened before they actually got involved. Aside from that, and maybe too many run-ins on a night when Vince is tightening security and having the wrestlers ready to go at a moment's notice. I think one perfectly timed run-in on the show would have been more poignant and achieved much the same end result.
