WWE Announces Release of Brent Albright
WWE announced earlier today that they have come to terms on the release of Brent Albright. Albright had wrestled on SmackDown since 2007 but had been off of television due to injury. It was speculated he was set to return late December 2007 or early January 2008 in preparation for the Royal Rumble but clearly those plans never occurred. WWE wishes Albright the best in his future endeavors
Future of Returning Superstars in Royal Rumble Match
A trio of superstars made their shocking returns to the WWE including Booker T, Rhyno, and Bobby Lashley. Booker T and Bobby Lashley were in the WWE just last year but had left to take time off (Booker T) and due to contractual issues (Lashley). Lashley is expected to go back to SmackDown after having negotiated a new contract. Booker T is currently believed to be a one off return but expectations are in the WWE that he will be back full time soon. As for Rhyno - it was stated that it was very surprising he wasn’t invited back for the ECW revival but he was still under contract with TNA. Rhyno’s contract recently came to an end which opened up a return to the WWE and it is said he will be appearing regularly soon on television.
WrestleMania 25 Location Finalists Revealed
Twenty five years of WrestleMania will be celebrated next year as the WWE hosts the 25th version of the entertainment spectacle. Eight cities have been revealed as finalists for the biggest event of the year. The eight finalists vying to be the host city of WrestleMania XXV are Reliant Stadium (Houston, TX), Louisiana Superdome (New Orleans, LA), Georgia Dome (Atlanta, Georgia), Ford Field (Detroit, MI), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, PA), Raymond James Stadium (Tampa Bay, FL), Edward Jones Dome (St. Louis, MO), and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (Los Angeles, CA).
Houston (WM 17), Detroit (WM 3), Philadelphia (WM 14), and Los Angeles (WM 2, 7, and 21) are all previous hosts of WrestleMania so it is rather telling that four of the eight are previous hosts. The host will be announced at this year’s WrestleMania
New Pay-Per-View Schedule Announced for 2008
Today the WWE has announced their newly revised Pay-Per-View schedule for the upcoming 2008 year. The new schedule has minimal changes but one noticeable change is the return of the former event - King of the Ring. WWE has thirteen events planned for the 2008 calendar year with the Big Four (Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series) being joined by King of the Ring as the five interpromotional events to be co-hosted by Raw and SmackDown. Additionally, Raw will have four branded events (Backlash, Vengeance, Unforgiven, and Armageddon) while SmackDown will host (No Way Out, Judgment Day, Retribution, and No Mercy).
Most notably the changes to the 2008 PPV schedule are the removal of Night of Champions and The Great American Bash in favor of King of the Ring and Retribution. Cyber Sunday has also been removed and not replaced by another PPV in October. It is believed that WWE will simply instead run an interactive episode of Monday Night Raw later on in the year to replace Cyber Sunday. Cyber Sunday had a four year run in WWE and initially gathered good feedback regarding the concept but WWE has elected to remove the two shows in October slot and instead focus on more build towards Survivor Series in November. Night of Champions lasted only one year and has been nixed in order to make room for the King of the Ring return. The last King of the Ring event took place in 2002 and that was also the last time the tournament took place as well.
Below is the schedule along with locations that have been confirmed so far at this time:
WWE No Way Out | Sunday February 17, 2008 | Las Vegas, Nevada
WWE WrestleMania XXIV | Sunday March 30, 2008 | Washington D.C.
WWE Backlash | Sunday April 27, 2008 | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
WWE Judgment Day | Sunday May 18, 2008 | Omaha, Nebraska
WWE Vengeance | Sunday June 1, 2008 | San Diego, California
WWE King of the Ring | Sunday June 29, 2008 | Dallas, Texas
WWE Retribution | Sunday July 20, 2008 | Uniondale, New York
WWE SummerSlam | Sunday August 17, 2008 | Indianapolis, Indiana
WWE Unforgiven | Sunday September 21, 2008 | Cleveland, Ohio
WWE No Mercy | Sunday October 5, 2008 | Portland, Oregon
WWE Survivor Series | Sunday November 23, 2008 | Boston, Massachusetts
WWE Armageddon | Sunday December 14, 2008 | Buffalo, New York
Also regarding the “themed” Pay-Per-View events - it is believed that WWE will have a reinitialized focus on having more “themed” episodes of their weekly episodic shows - Raw and SmackDown. In the past we’ve seen themes such as Raw Roulette and Night of Champions for both Raw and SmackDown so the initial removal of these events as PPV events does not mean they are completely gone. WWE has confirmed at this time that they are planning a special edition of Friday Night SmackDown on July 4th and dubbing it as The Great American Bash: Friday Night SmackDown LIVE! WWE is anticipating having more live episodes of SmackDown this year than they have in the past - a far cry from the past few years where there has only been one or two a year.
Miscellaneous Notes
Morale is very high backstage after the Royal Rumble event and many people are looking at the success of the show as being a huge turning point heading into WrestleMania season. John Cena’s Royal Rumble victory has received rave reviews and despite his booking over the last two years - many feel that Cena can regain some much needed momentum in an effort to rebuild his character.
The rebuild of the tag divisions on both Raw and SmackDown is something that has been internally discussed amongst the creative teams recently as both divisions are immensely struggling and this is expected to be addressed immediately. While it is not anticipated that these divisions will be fully built up by WrestleMania - it is expected that after WrestleMania there will be a huge emphasis on getting these tag divisions back to respectable levels that have not been seen in WWE in quite some time.
The same can be said for the Cruiserweight division which has seen an influx of new (and some old) talent debuting or returning. Just in the past few months WWE has brought back Tajiri and Billy Kidman and also added in Evan Bourne with a few other cruiserweights set to debut in the upcoming months. Bourne has received high praise from officials backstage one month into his WWE career and is expected to be a key cog of the division for the foreseeable future.
The Women’s division has been somewhat stagnant over the last year with mostly the same women feuding over the Women’s Championship - some form of combination of Beth Phoenix, Victoria, and Mickie James at most of the Pay-Per-Views. This is expected to change soon as well with the women being pushed more and some new talent entering as well.
The WWE Draft is set to return later on in the year and is expected to be in either April or possibly later on in the summer. No official date has been locked down yet but one thing has been confirmed that WWE is changing up the format of the Draft again this year. No confirmation on what exactly that means but there will not be any interpromotional matches with the winning brand’s superstar earning a pick like we saw last year.
WWE originally had plans for a return of Saturday Night’s Main Event in March but those plans have been nixed at this time.
