This PPV is going to suck like 90% of them do these days. I feel like they only try to put in the effort for Summerslam, Wrestlemania, and Royal Rumble and even then... It is questionable as to how much effort.
I... can't believe they're doing this. No way, no how.
I'm about to be the white knight here. I'm about to defend WWE. No freaking way.
Honestly their PPV efforts this year haven't been that bad. Granted that's because they had cheat codes in the gimmick matches to carry them for the most part, but they booked their way into a freaking great Elimination Chamber match, a solid Wrestlemania, a well-done Royal Rumble and watched the talent carry MITB.
The rise of Becky and Kofi helped those shows out tremendously, so was watching Bayley get elevated, Balor's competitive loss, Asuka's rise to the top (LOL) and Seth's overdue title win. There's been good stuff on PPV this year... if you forget Super Shit-Show happened last month. Or that they have weekly TV that didn't contribute a damn thing to the shows (Honestly if you missed everything outside of Kofi's gauntlet match and not even read results, wouldn't this all play out the same? Maybe see some of the build for the women's match?)
However this show... Oh boy, this show... This reminds me of one of those Capitol Punishment type shows, where everything felt so impossibly stale in pre-Pipebomb 2011 (back when R-Truth was the most entertaining thing on TV, those were the days, eh?)... So in honor of wwe.com asking a poll of "How interested are you in each match?"...lets do this.
Bayley vs Alexa Bliss: Interest level: None. Again for the 2011 comparisons, I knew someone on the Raw brand wasn't winning a Smackdown title, so that makes the outcome feel predictable. This was the worst feud of the year in 2017 by 10 miles (yeah, worse than anything Bray Wyatt did that year) and after re-heating Bayley this was the last place you needed to go. Maybe putting some demons from the past aside wouldn't be the worst thing for the girl, but after the last two years of Alexa Bliss PPV matches this has bathroom break written all over it. And we've seen this match before. And it sucked.
Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre: Interest level: None. So let me get this straight. Elias was announced as the biggest acquisition in Smackdown history as a troll, and Roman got mad and came over and punched Vince out of spite for not getting that honor (when obviously the point was to show how Roman was the biggest, but set up this angle in the process) and it's one of those angles that doesn't get over whatsoever because it's so unbelievable and see-through, and now it's being featured to the point where not only did they push aside Miz's legitimate beef and understandable heartfelt daddy issues, but are giving these two more mic time than EVERY SINGLE PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING MATCH COMBINED. Now Roman wants Drew as revenge for him not being able to beat up Shane, when Shane just wants revenge for Roman punching Vince and... There's too many gaps here and not one person gives enough of a shit to read this far. Not one person. Get Shane McMahon off my TV. Roman for IWGP Intercontinental Champion. And we've seen this match before. And it sucked.
Becky Lynch vs Lacey Evans: Interest level: None. There's just not enough to work with here. It reminds me of Bayley's NXT title win should have fallen flat, but they found enough things in the minor characters (Eva Marie, Alexa Bliss, Carmella) to give us reasons to keep getting behind the underdog babyface. Now Becky's at the top of the mountain trying to talk shit to a girl that's done nothing as a wrestler, and Lacey was called up too soon and has won one match on the main roster, I think? Maybe two? And she's going up against the girl who beat Ronda? And we've seen this match before. And it sucked.
Seth Rollins vs Baron Corbin: Interest level: None. It's crazy how Becky Lynch was built up so well but is floundering because there's nobody on the roster at her level (as I sit here drinking a carton of milk with Asuka's face on it) besides the stale Charlotte, lets cut to Seth Rollins over here looking at the barren wasteland of credibility we call the most talented roster in the world. There's one heel on this show with any heat or credibility and he's in tag team duty against Heavy Machinery. So, lets call on Rollins to carry people for a while, I guess? And we've seen this match before. And it sucked.
Kofi Kingston vs Dolph Ziggler: Interest level: Some. I loved Kofimania as much as the next guy (even as Vince was making the angle pretty illogical, Chamber/the gauntlet/Wrestlemania were great), but it's still Kofi Kingston. Dude's still 1-3 against Ziggler on PPV over his career. Dude's still a career midcarder that saw his chance at glory and rose to the occasion like an MF'er, and it helps us be invested when he wins because he could still lose at any moment, theoretically. Ziggler's largely in the same boat, and seeing these two together in the main event does kind of remind you of why we all got behind Kofi to begin with. This meme matchup from 2010 when they wrestled 80+ times has come full circle. And we've seen this match before. And it was fine.
The main selling point for the show would be if they have some fun with Bryan/Rowan and HM this week on SD. If they make that feud fun...
