Nobody needs reminding of it though, suspension of disbelief and all.
You don't want guys to stop midway through a match, get on the mic and say "that didn't really hurt him", same rule applies with promos and such.
Telling everyone he's not a racist makes it harder to buy into his act, we all know its a rouse but making it clear kills the character.
During a show I can't see them doing anything like this at all to break kayfabe but this is a different situation and I think it is a fair way to address the situation. Yes they made it clear that they are characters but they also managed to pretty much stay in character during the promo as well. I don't see this as any different to most interviews that wrestlers do these days where most of it is out of character anyway even when they are promoting a live event.
