CWC preview, Aug. 24, 2016: Second Round wraps up with three huge matches
The Second Round of the Cruiserweight Classic wraps up tonight on WWE Network. Will Johnny Gargano be able to reverse his fortunes after TakeOver: Brooklyn II when he faces T.J. Perkins?
Rich Swann vs. Lince Dorado (Second Round Match)
The Second Round of the inaugural Cruiserweight Classic comes to a close with three huge matches tonight at 9/8 C on WWE Network.
The first showdown features two aerial artists who are sure to take flight, Rich Swann and Lince Dorado. Dorado dazzled the WWE Universe in his First Round victory over Mustafa Ali. Puerto Rico’s golden lynx showed off his incredible lucha libre skills, nimbly darting around the ring with ease before going to the air. His picture-perfect Shooting Star Press brought Full Sail University to its feet and earned him a spot in the Second Round.
Swann, however, is a completely different brand of aerialist. The Baltimore native mixes his fresh dance moves with unbelievable agility, creating an offense unlike any other in the tournament. Swann advanced to the Second Round by putting Hong Kong, China’s Jason Lee away with a breathtaking Standing 450 Splash.
Who will fly higher and take their place in the CWC Quarterfinals this Wednesday?
Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Drew Gulak (Second Round Match)
The next Second Round battle sees two mat wrestling mavens squaring off, as England’s Zack Sabre Jr. squares off with Drew Gulak of the United States.
Sabre walked into the CWC as one of the favorites to win the entire tournament, and showed exactly why in his First Round battle with Tyson Dux. The technical wizard twisted the veteran Canadian grappler into a pretzel, wrenching simultaneously on both of his opponent’s arms and forcing Dux to verbally submit in a painful-looking omoplata/armbar combination.
Gulak’s brand of mat wrestling may not be as graceful as Sabre’s, but there’s no doubt that it gets the job done. The minimalist mutilator pummeled Harv Sihra into the canvas, then bent the “Bollywood Don” backwards with reckless abandon, making him tap out to a Dragon Sleeper and setting up a showdown with Sabre Jr.
Can Sabre Jr. live up to expectations and continue on in the Cruiserweight Classic, or will Drew Gulak show that his brand of submission wrestling is superior?
Johnny Gargano vs. T.J. Perkins (Second Round Match)
The final match of the Second Round sees Johnny Gargano taking on T.J. Perkins. Johnny Wrestling made a huge impression on the WWE Universe in the First Round, when he weathered a blistering barrage of devastating strikes from his friend and tag team partner, Tommaso Ciampa. The resilient Gargano absorbed all of it, then managed to roll Ciampa up to secure the victory and advance in the CWC.
Meanwhile, Perkins drew Germany’s Da Mack in the First Round. In a showdown between perhaps the two most charismatic competitors in the tournament, the Filipino flash showed off his expert counter-wrestling ability and forced “The Urban German” to tap out to a flying kneebar.
Heading into this important showdown, Perkins may have the upper hand. Gargano is just days removed from a grueling NXT Tag Team Title Match at TakeOver: Brooklyn II, where The Revival targeted his knee with vicious double-team maneuvers. Will Johnny Wrestling be at 100 percent for this all-important battle, or will the ultra-confident Perkins back up his boasts and send the Cleveland native packing? Find out when the Second Round of the Cruiserweight Classic concludes, tonight at 9/8 C, only on WWE Network!
