I don't think Cena needs to turn heel. I'd be extremely interested if it did happen, but I don't think that's necessary. But there's no denying that SOMETHING needs to happen. He hasn't had an edge for a long time and, while his ring work continues to improve, he's also been stale for quite a long time ago and we're just putting up with it.
I liket this angle where legends are examining Cena and have the experience and wisdom to know that, even if the fans don't see it, the pressure is getting to Cena. Hell, we're bound to see Stone Cold given The Rock is involved. Have those two ever done a segment together? That would be huge.
And I'm not necessarily saying it WILL, but this Cena-analysis angle NEEDS to have an impact on his character and it needs to go somewhere interesting. Because if not, and Cena "Rises above hate" and stays the same (there's a conundrum for you), then after Wrestlemania there will be one of two outcomes: Either Cena wins and the crowd thinks "well what the hell was the point?" and grow to resent him further, or The Rock wins and Cena just looks like a stubborn loser who wasn't willing to leave his comfort zone and evolve for the biggest match of his career.
The latter would have to lead to a heel turn lest that flaw haunts Cena's face character for years to come. Not that a heel turn would be bad, but WWE would not be able to maintain Cena as a credible face, ruling the face option completely out for them.
My point is that if nothing comes from this angle and we don't see an edgy change in Cena, the crowd's resentment for him will grow even further and he will become beyond stale: Stubborn, weak and boring.
