Road to NXT TakeOver: San Antonio

Event Announcement
The first TakeOver event presented by the black and gold brand aka NXT, was revealed to be NXT TakeOver: San Antonio event. When would it take place? On the 28th of January 2017, Where would it take place? Rather obviously in San Antonio Texas, at the Freedom Coliseum. ​

NXT Championship - Loser Leaves NXT
Shinsuke Nakamura(c) VS Samoa Joe
Back in August 2016, the "King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura walked into the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II event in the role of challenger to the NXT Championship. Which was then around the waist of the "Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe(c). When it was all said and done and the dust had settled, Nakamura would walk out of the event as the new NXT Champion.

His first reign as the NXT Champion would last a pretty decent length of time at a total of 91 days. Only to lose the title at the NXT TakeOver: Toronto event to the very man he defeated to claim it in the first place aka Samoa Joe. Fast forward to December 2016, more importantly fast forward to the third day of December 2016, an NXT house show took place in Nakamura's home country Japan.

Where the the home country former champion challenged Joe and defeated him to become a two time NXT Champion and begin his second reign. NXT General Manager William Regal announced that the two men would clash for the championship one more time in San Antonio this time with the stiulation that loser would leave NXT.

NXT Tag Team Championship
DIY(c) VS Authors of Pain
The feud surround the black and gold brand's set of tag team championship belts aka the NXT Tag Team Championship. Concerned not one but two of the top tag teams on offer from NXT, first the duo of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa aka DIY(c), the reigning and defending champions. And the montrous pair of Akam and Rezar aka the Authors of Pain.


NXT Women's Championship - Peyton Royce is Banned

The third and final championship match made official for the NXT TakeOver San Antonio event regarded the NXT Women's Championship. Between the reigning and defending champion the "Empress" Asuka(c) and the challenger Billie Kay. The challenger aka Kay got a non-title victory over the champion on an episode of NXT thanks to help from Peyton Royce. NXT General Manager William Regal wasted little time in banning Royce from San Antonio under threat of suspension.​

Champions Need Contenders
NXT General Manager William Regal revealed that a trio of Number One Contender matches would round out the card for NXT TakeOver: San Antonio. The first being a singles match between Bobby Roode and Eric Young to crown a challenger for the NXT Championship.

Second a tag team match between TM61 and The Reveal to crown challengers to the NXT Tag Team Championship. Third and final a singles match between Ember Moon and Nikki Cross where the winner would earn a future shot at the NXT Women's Championship.​

Road to Royal Rumble

It's a new year but more importantally it's January annnnnnnnnnd you know what that means right? It's Royal Rumble season baby. The 2017 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event was announced for the 29th of January 2017.

It would be the second consecutive event presented by the company to take place in San Antonio Texas for the year. However the event wouldn't be taking place at the Freedom Coliseum, but rather it would take place in the Alamodome instead.

Kevin Owens(c) VS Seth Rollins
On the first episode of of Monday Night RAW of the new year, the main event of the night was a ten man mini rumble match. Where the last man inside the squared circle would earn the right to call themselves the Number One Contender to the WWE Universal Championship.

But more importantally they would be granted a shot at the WWE Universal Championship at the 2017 Royal Rumble pay per view. It came down to the pair of the fan favourite Seth Rollins and the current champion Kevin Owens(c) tag team partner Chris Jericho. In the end the former got the better of the latter and sent him flying out of the ring to win the match.

Making the match official for the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event, Kevin Owens(c) versus Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship.​

Not wanting to be out done when it came to the Royal Rumble pay per view, the General Manager Paul Heyman took to the ring on an episode of the blue brand show.

To make an announcement regarding the Rumble pay per view event, and what an announcement it was. He aka Heyman revealed to the WWE Universe that at the Rumble, it would be AJ Styles(c) versus Joooooooooooooohn Cena for the WWE Championship.

On an episode of the company's flagship show aka Monday Night RAW a pair of women went at it in the middle of the ring. This wasn't a regular match though as the winner would earn the right to challenge for the Women's Universal Championship. At the Royal Rumble ppv event, the two women were Bayley and Dana Brooke with Bayley getting the deciding fall.

The Bar(c) VS Enzo Amore & Big Cass
The fan favourite tag team of Enzo Amore and Big Cass earned a shot at the Universal Tag Team Championships at a time of their choosing. By taking on and defeating the reigning champions of Cesaro and Sheamus aka the Bar(c) in a non-title match.​

WWE Women's & WWE Tag Team Championship Matches
The two final matches added to the card of the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event came by way of Friday Night Smackdown. And concerned not one but two pieces of the blue brand's championship gold, those being the WWE Women's and WWE Tag Team Championships. On an episode of Friday Night Smackdown, the trio of Becky Lynch and the current tag team champions American Alpha(c).

Faced off with the trio of the current women's champion Alexa Bliss(c) and the Vaudevillains. The match devolved into two seperate brawls that were broken up by refs and security, FNS GM Paul Heyman made an appearance to announce two title matches for the Royal Rumble as a result of the brawls/.​
