World Heavyweight Championship
At the 2016 WWE Summerslam ppv event the “Phenomenal” AJ Styles faced off with John Cena in singles action. Elsewhere at the same event the “Lunatic” Dean Ambrose© successfully retained the World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match.
Against both the “Apex Predator” Randy Orton and the “Show Off” Dolph Ziggler. In the lead up to the TNS exclusive Backlash ppv event, the General Manager of Tuesday Night Smackdown Daniel Bryan took to the ring to announce a huge main event for the ppv.

For the World Heavyweight Championship between Dean Ambrose (Champion) and AJ Styles (Challenger)

WWE Intercontinental Championship
Fresh off defeating Apollo Crews at the biggest party of the summer aka Summerslam. The currently reigning and defending WWE Intercontinental Champion aka the Miz© was on cloud nine so to speak.

That all changed when he was confronted on an episode of Tuesday Night Smackdown. By a man he knew all too well in the form of John Cena, who challenged Miz for a shot at Backlash. Which Miz automatically shutdown and then walked off but that isn’t where the story ends.

As Daniel Bryan aka the TNS GM revealed on the following weeks show that he had made the match official for Backlash.

World Tag Team Championship
The fourth and final championship added to the card of the Backlash ppv. Revolved around the reinstated World Tag Team Championship and of course Daniel Bryan made the announcement.

Like the women’s division before it he invited the brands tag team division into the squared circle. Where he aka Bryan revealed that all the teams present would compete in a tag team battle royal at Backlash.

To crown the inaugural set of champions in this new era of the World Tag Team Championships.

The Apex of Showing Off
At Summerslam both Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton attempted and failed to become the new WWE World Champion. As the defending champion aka Dean Ambrose was able to retain after he pinned Ziggler with Dirty Deeds.

Both men blamed the other for their loss which resulted in repeated brawls.

So, a match between the two men to settle their issues was scheduled for Backlash with the winner being crowned the N1C to the WWE World Championship

Apollo is Hunted by the Lone Wolf
Apollo Crews came up short in his attempt to capture his first piece of WWE gold at Summerslam. In the weeks following he found himself caught in the crosshairs of a fellow blue brand male superstar.

None other than the “Lone Wolf” Baron Corbin who obviously thought Crews was a lesser man for failing. Crews went to TNS GM Daniel Bryan and asked for a match against Corbin at Backlash which was granted.

WWE Universal Championship
The "Real RockNRolla" Finn Balor went one on one with Seth Rollins in the main event of the 2016 edition of the WWE Summerslam ppv event. This wasn't a regular singles match no sir, this was for the new WWE Universal Championship. In a thrilling instant classic first time encounter both of it's participants laid it all on the line to earn the honor of being the inaugural champion.

When it was all said and done, the WWE Universe had the first ever champion in the form of the "Real RockNRolla" aka Balor. Monday Night RAW's General Manager Mick Foley took to the ring on the post-Summerslam edition of RAW. To announce a rematch between Balor and Rollins, this time around it would be two out of three falls.

WWE Universal Women's Championship
The then WWE Women's Championship was on the line at the biggest party of the summer. As the reigning and defending champion Sasha Banks(c) successfully retained the gold against Charlotte Flair. With the newest incarnation of the brand split going into full affect after Summerslam.

The title went under a name change as it would from now on be called the WWE Universal Women's Championship. In the weeks following this, Banks would find herself met face to face with another old rival in the form of Bayley. Who issued a challenge for the title at Clash of the Champions and Banks accepted it.
