Event Announcement
The 2017 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event was announced for the 29th of January 2017. The city of San Antonio Texas would play host to the event, which would emanate from the Alamodome.​

2017 Royal Rumble Match
The first match confirmed for the event was rather fittingly the 2017 edition of the titular over the top rope battle royal. Also known as the Royal Rumble match where the winner would earn themselves a shot at either the WWE Universal or WWE World Heavyweight Championships at WrestleMania. This year’s edition of the match just so happened to be the thirtieth consecutive Royal Rumble pay per view event.

Champion VS Champion - Winner Takes All - Jericho Banned
Kevin Owens(c) VS Roman Reigns(c)
After having enough of Chris Jericho's repeated interference to cost him shots at the WWE Universal Championship. The current WWE United States Champion Roman Reigns(c), went to RAW General Manager Mick Foley with a suggestion. He asked Foley for one more shot at Kevin Owens(c) for the WWE Universal Championship, with Jericho banned from the match.

Foley didn't need much convincing and made the match official for the Royal Rumble PPV. However he stated Jericho would be banned under threat of being removed from the Royal Rumble match. And added that the match would be a winner takes all match, as he didn't want to be accused of playing favourites.

An egotistical WWE Champion aka the "Phenomenal" AJ Styles(c) appeared on the first episode of Smackdown of the new year. To proclaim not only that he was the greatest man to ever hold the title. But he had also defeated everyone that the company deemed worthy to try and take his belt away from him. He was immediately interrupted by the arrival of the brand's GM Daniel Bryan.

Who wasted little time in putting Styles in his place. By revealing that his next title defence would take place at the Royal Rumble, against a man the champion knew all too well. The newest member of the blue brand and making the transition from NXT the "Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe.

Fresh off successfully defending the title against her forever frenemy Charlotte Flair at the End of the Line ppv in late 2016. The current WWE RAW Women's Champion aka the "Legit Boss" Sasha Banks(c). Didn't have to wait long to know who would be challenging her next. As the "Raven Haired Antihero" Paige made herself know by stepping up and asking for a title match which Banks accepted.​

Nikki Bella beat Becky Lynch, Carmella, Eva Marie, Maryse, Naomi and Natalya Neidhart. In a mini-Royal Rumble on an episode of Smackdown to earn a title shot at the WWE Smackdown Women's Championship at the Royal Rumble.

John Cena(c) VS The Miz
On the first episode of Smackdown of 2017, John Cena made his return to the company. And competed against then WWE Intercontinental Champion the Miz(c) in a singles match. The "Leader of the C-Nation" was able to get the win and as a result become WWE Intercontinental Champion, for the first time in his career. Miz would attack Cena on the go home edition of Smackdown, and stated he would get his rematch at the Rumble.

It was announced on WWE.com that three matches would take place on the WWE Royal Rumble ppv Kickoff Show. The first being a tag team match for the WWE RAW Tag Team Championship. Between the champions the Bar(c) and the challengers the Good Brothers.

Bayley VS Nia Jax
The second match confirmed for the KickOff Show was a one on one women's division match. Which would see the duo of Bayley and Nia Jax go to war with the winner of the match. Earning themselves the next shot at the WWE RAW Women's Championship.

American Alpha(c) VS The Vaudevillains VS Breezango
The third and final match added to the KickOff Show was a triple threat tag team match. This time around for the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship featuring the champions American Alpha(c). And the two sets of challengers the Vaudevillians and Breezango. ​

WWE ROYAL RUMBLE 2017

KICKOFF SHOW
The WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event kicked off with a triple threat tag team match. For the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship. Featuring the defending champions Chad Gable & Jason Jordan aka American Alpha©. And the two sets of challengers the Vaudevillians and Breezango. Gable hit a Rolling German Suplex on Aiden English for the pin.

Next Bayley and Nia Jax squared off with a future shot at the WWE RAW Women’s Championship, up for grabs. Despite a good showing from Bayley, she would end up on the losing end in this encounter. As she found herself the victim of a Samoan Drop from Jax.

After that the Kickoff Show concluded with a tag team match for the WWE RAW Tag Team Championship. Which saw new champions crowned as Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows aka the Good Brothers. Isolated Sheamus and proceeded to lay him out with the Magic Killer for the win.


PAY PER VIEW
The actual pay per view began with Sasha Banks© defending the WWE RAW Women’s Championship against Paige. In the end the former trapped her opponent in the Banks Statement and Paige tapped out.

Next AJ Styles© put the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Against a man he knew all too well and the newest member of the Smackdown roster. In the form of the “Samoan Submission Machine” Samoa Joe. In a truly shocking turn of events, we saw a new champion crowned. After Joe moved out of the way of an attempted Phenomenal Forearm and proceeded to pick Styles up and hit an Uranage which led to the pin.

After that Alexa Bliss© successfully retained the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship. In a one-on-one match against Nikki Bella thanks to Twisted Bliss.

In the fourth match of the night, the “Leader of the C-Nation” John Cena©. Faced off with The Miz in a match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Which came about after Cena beat Miz for the gold on an episode of Smackdown. In the end Cena forced his opponent to submit to the STF.


The penultimate match saw not one but two titles on the line as WWE United States Champion Roman Reigns©. Went up against the WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens©. In a winner takes all match which also had the added bonus of Chris Jericho banned from ringside. After it was all said and done, we had ourselves a new double champion as Owens hit a Pop-Up Powerbomb for the win.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now time for the main event of the evening, the Royal Rumble match. Where the two superstars who drew numbers one and two would begin the match. With another entrant coming into the match at the ninety second mark. This will continue all thirty men have entered the match and only end when there is one man left inside the ring. The winner of the match will earn themselves a shot at either the WWE Universal or WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 33.

Zack Ryder and Xavier Woods began the match they were soon joined by the third entrant in the form of Tony Nese. Titus O’Neil, TJ Perkins, Sin Cara and Seth Rollins joined the match one after the other. The number seven entrant aka Rollins scored back-to-back eliminations in the forms of TJP and Tony Nese. The match continued with no more eliminations taking place. Until the fifteenth entrant aka Braun Strowman entered into it. Who sent body after body after body flying out of the squared circle. The final four of the match were Seth Rollins (7), Dean Ambrose (17), Bray Wyatt (23) and Chris Jericho (30). Wyatt eliminated Ambrose then Rollins got rid of him. Only to be immediately thrown out by Y2J who was declared the winner.
