I really don't see how American Dad is plain at all, especially once they evolve the characters to have Roger constantly doing personas and Steve being more quirky. There's a ton of surrealism and fantasy elements too. Idk. I feel like the first few seasons could definitely be characterized as a bit plain but this is a show with 17 seasons now so it's been damn good for a long time imo.
