If you are thinking of a crowd as a body of people behaving as a unit, it is singular. So you might say "A large crowd was gathering at the entrance."

If you are thinking of a crowd as a large number of individuals, it is plural - rather like "a lot of people" or "a number of people".

Right?

OK, but if you're thinking of a crowd as a large number of individuals, then say "A lot of people are cheering." If you're going to lump them into a group as one collective unit and call it a crowd, and a single crowd, then you should say, "The crowd is cheering."

Yes, that's correct.

But the definition of the word "crowd" is "A large number of people gathered together, typically in a disorganized or unruly way.", I'm sure that plural rules apply here.

Back to your jury example wwerules, would you say "The jury are upset", or "The jury is upset"?
