We've had a lot of cool members join on Mania day in the past. Can't just generalize everyone as bots.

if we lock registrations before mania we prevent bots yes, but we'd also prevent potential sign ups. And bots sign up all the time year round

Plus, there are barely any bots. It's not a hassle to ban them as well.

But most never return. Not even a year later for Mania.

Half the members that were here in 2012 aren't here anymore. People come and leave. Not our job to make them stick around. lol

well, it's the community's job to keep and nurture members, but we cannot force that, only encourage it
