November 24 in Korakuen Hall, Shota Umino was surprised by a message from Claudio Castagnoli. After AEW World Champion Jon Moxley had declared that he would send an ‘emissary’ to wrestle Shota Umino January 5 rather than wrestle the Roughneck himself, a furious Umino awaited Moxley’s choice of opponent.

That choice is imposing Castagnoli, who called acknowledged that Shota was the very first member of Moxley’s feared ‘Deathriders’ stable but had since gone astray. Now Castagnoli versus Umino is set for a showdown in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Dynasty.​

Another first time ever singles match has been added to the mix for January 5 at Wrestle Dynasty as Brody King will face David Finlay for the first time in singles competition.

At Fighting Spirit Unleashed, Finlay issued an open challenge to anybody that wanted to face him in the Tokyo Dome for Wrestle Dynasty. Already defending his IWGP Global Championship against Yota Tsuji at Wrestle Kingdom 19, Finlay wanted still more competition, and Brody King answered the call in a video message this week.

Gedo answered in Kagoshima with David Finlay on the phone. ‘A real king doesn’t wear another man’s name on his chest, and he doesn’t take orders from a billionaire’s son’, said Finlay as Gedo promised that Brody would experience ‘a real dogfight,’ in the Tokyo Dome. The match has now been made for Wrestle Dynasty!​

Wrestle Dynasty on January 5 continues to load up with under four weeks to go before the biggest weekend in professional wrestling. A new match sees CMLL in the mix, while stipulations have been added that affect four crucial bouts.

First, a change to the originally announced card has had to be implemented as the right knee injury to HENARE means he and Great-O-Khan have been forced to vacate the IWGP Tag Team titles. O-Khan has insisted to reply to the Young Bucks’ challenge from earlier in the World Tag League tour however, and there will be a match to determine new IWGP Tag champions, Matthew and Nicholas Jackson facing O-Khan and a partner of his choosing.

Also official are defences of the IWGP Global and World Heavyweight Championships. With Shota Umino and Zack Sabre Jr. involved in matches with Claudio Castagnoli and Ricochet respectively on January 5, whoever leaves the Wrestle Kingdom 19 main event January 4 with the title will put it on the line at Wrestle Dynasty!

It’s the same situation for the Global gold, which will either be defended when David Finlay faces Brody King on January 5, or when Yota Tsuji takes on Jack Perry!​

After she defended the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship in the main event in Long Beach, Mercedes Moné said that she planned to have her next title match in the Tokyo Dome. Asking who would step up to the CEO, it was Mina Shirakwa who answered the call. Shirakawa said that Moné wanted money, fame and titles, but asked if she wanted Mina; Moné would give Shirakwa the match under the condition that if Mina is still RPW British Women’s Champion come January 5 after a defence to come in the UK against Dani Luna, then both titles would be on the line.

Also set for Wrestle Dynasty is a special NJPW vs CMLL lucha gauntlet match. In this matchup, up to eight participants, four from New Japan and four from CMLL, will enter the ring at one minute intervals, and the first pinfall will end the bout. Who will be in this dramatic and high speed encounter?​

CMLL, AEW, ROH advance participants to International Women’s Cup​

3/4 of January 5 four way set

Three quarters of the International Women’s Cup field has been set for Wrestle Dynasty, after a pair of qualifying matches took place this week on Ring Of Honor and AEW Collision, and Arena Mexico saw CMLL’s entrant determined.

First, ROH Thursday saw a four way match between Athena, Billie Starks, Red Velvet and Leyla Hirsch. ROH Women’s World Champion Athena was slow to engage with the other three women, electing to warm up on the outside as Starks took an early advantage with a tope suicida to Hirsch. When Velvet dove to both women on the floor though, Athena found her opening to get involved.

Athena continued to be the opportunist in the matchup, stealing a submission on the powerful Hirsch, albeit being crushed when Hirsch slammed Velvet onto her. Athena had more than enough strength of her own as she slammed down both Hirsch and Velvet before going up to the top rope, but there she was met with a “tower of doom” powerbomb that had Starkz in the driver’s seat. A shotgun dropkick from Hirsch took down both Starkz and Athena, and the powerhouse came inside to plant Red Velevet, but as Starkz cleared Hirsch off the pin and out the ring, Athena back doored her way to the win and the Tokyo Dome spot.

Then, Friday night in Arena Coliseo, CMLL staged their own four way to determine a spot, CMLL World Womens Champion Zeuxis, Persephone, Reyna Isis and National Women’s Champion Sanely all competing. In a different, elimination format, it was Sanely who was first out, courtesy of a package piledriver from Zeuxis. Isis would put paid to the world champion’s hopes as she came off the top with a double knee, before falling herself to a Vertical Drop Brainbuster to Persephone. The Campeona Universal tournament winner had booked her place in the Dome.

Finally, AEW Collision Saturday saw Willow Nightingale and Jamie Hayter face off after each advanced through a mini tournament to the Winter Is Coming card. Hayter tried repeatedly to power Willow to the mat, but it was Nightingale with the first big knockdown. The former STRONG Women’s Champion continued to have an edge in a battle over a backslide and then in a chop exchange; Hayter had an opportunity presented to her with a DDT on the apron, but a cannonball plancha from Nightingale kept Willow in the driver’s seat.

A suplex on the floor, and a second off the top got Hayter back into the bout, and the former AEW Women’s Champion landed an Ushigoroshi like maneuver for two. Willow fired back with an Argentine backbreaker and then a quebrada for two; while Hayter came close to finding the Hayterade, Nightingale landed a Pounce and the Babe With the Powerbomb for three.

That just leaves STARDOM’s participation in the four way to be determined. 16 women will take part in four individual four ways before a final matchup for the winners, all in a mini tournament over three days between December 20 and 22. Who will join this eclectic mix of talent?​
