Blizzard has brought back the Scroll of Resurrection feature to World of Warcraft, allowing current players to give free trials to former subscribers. However, the revamped Scroll of Resurrection also comes with some pretty impressive perks.
The Scroll of Resurrection gives you a free upgrade to World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the current expansion. Furthermore, it lets you boost one character to level 80 immediately so that you can experience that expansion's new zones. Also included is a week of free game time and free faction/server transfers so you can play with your friend.
The free boost to level 80, which also earns the recipient a full set of level 80 gear, is a surprise. It saves the player hours upon hours of leveling up. Furthermore, it addresses one reason that a former player might not return though: the process of "catching up" to other players can be very time-intensive and intimidating.
Why is Blizzard being so generous? Well, the fact is that WoW has been bleeding subscribers. They lost about 1.8 million subscribers in 2011. Blizzard is trying a number of interesting tactics to retain the player base, such as giving free copies of Diablo 3 to players who subscribe to the game for a year.
WoW's next expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is expected to arrive later this year.
