William Regal set to have Vice President role in WWE

William Regal will reportedly have a vice president role in WWE when he returns to the company early next year.

According to a report from PWInsider, Regal and WWE have finalized a deal that will see him return to the company the first week of January. Regal will be a vice president with the company although his actual job title has not yet been revealed. Regal's previous title with the company had been WWE Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting.

Tony Khan revealed on the pre-ROH Final Battle media call that AEW was not picking up the renewal option on his contract at Regal's request. Regal told Khan he was hoping to return to WWE where he could be involved in the training of his son, NXT's Charlie Dempsey.

"Basically, he's got a son who works at another wrestling promotion and he really wanted us at the end of the year when we had the option to renew the contract, he was asking that we would not. Nothing bad, we were having a great time working together but that this was an opportunity for him to go back and work in his golden years of his career with his son."

PWInsider.com has confirmed that William Regal's official title for his new role in WWE is Vice President, Global Talent Development.

Regal, 54, started back with World Wrestling Entertainment last week and was at the most recent Smackdown taping.

Regal broke into the business in Europe in the early 1980s before being signed to WCW in 1993, where he had 4 World Television Championship runs. Regal had several runs in WWE over the years, initially as the forgettable "Man's Man" character before hitting his stride after getting sober and having runs with the WWE Intercontinental and European Championships as well as winning the 2008 King of the Ring Tournament. His WWE autobiography Walking The Golden Mile is among the most underrated wrestling books of all time.

In 2014, Regal began focusing primarily on WWE's developmental, appearing on screen as an announcer and as the NXT General Manager but behind the scenes, he had risen into one of Paul Levesque's trusted lieutenants. Eventually given the official title of WWE Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting, Regal was regularly traveling to major independent events to help scout talents and bring them into the WWE fold. He was a major sounding board for talents inside and outside of WWE and was pretty much considered to have a job for life until Vince McMahon dismantled the Paul Levesque black and gold vision of WWE NXT.

Released along with many other Levesque staffers in January 2022, Regal moved to AEW. He debuted in March 2022, playing off his real life past as a mentor to Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. This led to the official formation of The Blackpool Combat Club, which eventually added Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli. Regal turned on Moxley to set up MJF's AEW title victory and was then written out after MJF attacked him, with the idea that Regal was leaving the BCC behind to fend for themselves.

Vince McMahon's resignation from WWE and the return of Paul Levesque to power set the stage for this return as Regal has been long considered one of Levesque's top Consiglieres.

AEW President Tony Khan stated that he released Regal from his AEW deal in order to allow him to go and work for the company Regal's son, NXT star Charlie Dempsey was in, but that Regal would not be able to appear on television in 2023. Khan noted that dealing with his own mother's health issues at the time (which all signs are she is in a much better place) informed his decision to allow Regal to go work with his son.
