Ever since B.J. Penn's UFC 132 fight with Jon Fitch went up in smoke, fans have been wondering what's next for "The Prodigy." If a Monday exchange on Twitter is any indication, it could be former Strikeforce middleweight and EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields.

Later, Shields, who lost a unanimous decision to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre last month at UFC 129, would respond:

@bjpenndotcom even better, let's make it the first 5 round non-title fightless than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply Jake Shields

Is this a fight you'd be interested in seeing? Prior to losing to St. Pierre, Shields had won an incredible 15 fights in a row. Penn was impressive against Matt Hughes at UFC 123, but faded late in a tough fight against Fitch at UFC 127.

If this fight does materialize, and it does seem like a practical match to make, it could put the winner right back "in the mix" for a shot at the championship. An extremely relevant fight for the welterweight division at this point.

B.J. Penn (16-7-2)
Draw Jon Fitch - UFC 127
Win Matt Hughes - KO (Punches) UFC 123
Loss Frankie Edgar - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 118

Jake Shields (26-5-1)
Loss Georges St. Pierre - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 129
Win Martin Kampmann - Decision (Split) UFC 121
Win Dan Henderson - Decision (Unanimous) Strikeforce: Nashville

Poll Who would win?
