Without making this thread all philosophical, sometimes "he's watching over you" doesn't mean the literal sense of him watching over you with a case of beer in heaven. It could be that you use his life to improve yours: do shit you wouldn't normally do, make yourself a better person, think "what would X think of this?" to improve your life choices -- that type of stuff. Atheists can go to funerals and be inspired by the service, too.
I guess, but I never have been. Every service I've been too gets too bogged down in religion. It always seems really stupid to me as well because the pastor talking didn't know the dude and he just rambles on about generic shit. bleh, wicked hung over now. need gatorade STAT

Ah religion. What a topic eh? I took time in my life to look into different types (even witchcraft as it dealt mainly with nature, which I know exists) but none of them really fit for me. My wife and I discuss this from time to time and I like what we seem to agree on. Its not religious beliefs that are wrong IMO, its ORGANIZED RELIGION. People at the top changing it and molding it over the years to USE it and the people who believe it. It still happens today really. You think someone who proclaims to not believe in god will EVER get voted in as POTUS while we're alive? I highly doubt it and that is a dumb shit reason. Anyway, I like to think of it as we are all energy that inhabits a physical body. When we die our energy returns to whence it came, but after that I have no idea (and no one ever will). Maybe our families are there waiting for us in spirit somehow? My wife likes to watch ghost shows and Long Island Medium, which I know are just tv shows - not reality as they claim to be - but damn if that shit ain't convincing in some way. I want to experience for myself first (ghosts, mediums, etc) but never have. Not yet anyway. so its hard for me to believe as I am kind of a "see it to believe it" type person.

And just to take this off track a bit more - has anyone watched Cosmos with Neil DeGrasse Tyson? If that shit does not refute the stories in the bible I don't know what else will. Maybe some kind of god kicked off the big bang, I could maybe buy that considering the immense amount of energy and complexity involved with it. But is he watching over us? I highly doubt it.

Not to say the bible doesn't have some good ideas. Like the golden rule - "Treat others the way you would like to be treated". What else could you want? I always refer to the movie Dogma too - these lines:

Rufus: Are you saying you believe?
Bethany: No. But I have a good idea.

Such an awesome movie. Now I need to watch it again lol.
Dogma is awesome lol .Strange thing is I love it, but every time I make someone watch it with me they hate it :/

Atheists are equivalent to a pair of tits. They are soft, nice, squishy, some times big, and overall rounded but at the end of the day they are just.. tits.

Where religion can give comfort to some, in other instances it gives confusion and adds to the pain. I remember when I was a senior in high school and my 18 year old cousin died in a horrific car accident. He was very religious (just like his entire family) and had his entire life ahead of him. He was going to join the Marines and take his life in a new direction. His death was very difficult for me to come to terms with. I didn't understand why he, a very devout Christian and a young man with so much to give the world, was taken so young but I was still standing. I still remember to this day how fucked up it was and how concerned my sister was about my cousin being in heaven because he wasn't baptized.

Where religion gives "reasons" for why some things happen, I don't think it necessarily gives comfort. The only thing that seems to really help (for me anyway) is time. Time really does make things easier if you're willing to pick yourself up and continue living.

D'Z, my condolences to you for your loss. I know we don't talk much at all, but if you ever need to talk you know where to find me.

I'll throw this out there once more, for those of you that do consider yourselves atheists, I think you might be agnostics.

If you are talking to me, no, I'm atheist. I believe there is no god.

Not referencing you, otherwise woulda quoted. Just notifying some who think they're atheist when they aren't, mainly cause some (not necessarily on this site) flaunt around their atheism when then aren't even atheist.
