It gives me the option to make an internal memory card for ps1/ps2 games but they don't work on 40gb ps3 because it isn't backwards compatible.

Its because the software is the same. So you can still make the internal memory cards, but you just cant play the game. It is just like I think the SD Mem Card slots are under that flap, but the flap is just glued shut, but I dont want to break my PS3 to see if they are under there, then they arent, and I broke my shit lol. But yeah its cuz the software is the same. They cant have everyone with different things, because then updating it is whack and it screws everything up. So yeah...thats why

yeah you can play PS1 games on a 40gig, but not PS2. And Malcom the memory card slots are not there. The systems are not identically built as you may beleive.

no but people have. The slots aren't there. I mean that would be like building a computer with a DVD rom then gluing it shut so you can't use it. It would just be a big waste of money.
