AUSTIN (KXAN) - Walking and texting usually means you're not paying attention and that can be dangerous, if not embarrassing.
One woman’s walking and texting embarrassment went viral after she wasn’t paying attention at a mall and fell into a fountain.
“I’ve tripped over a couple of curbs,†said University of Texas student Elizabeth Fischer.
And while it's not illegal, it was enough to get UT student Brighton Keller a ticket earlier this month.
“I think if I wasn’t texting, and I was walking, even though the light had just turned red, I think I would have been fine,†Keller said.
Keller said she was walking back from the library late one night when she crossed the Guadalupe at the pedestrian crosswalk at roughly 23 rd Street.
She said she had a walk sign when she started crossing the intersection.
“There were probably about 20 of us walking, but because I was walking and had my head down and texting, I got the ticket,†said Keller.
She was cited for walking against the light. The official reason she was stopped: walking and texting.
“I understand the point he was trying to make, but I definitely think it’s silly,†Keller said.
Other students we talked to agree with Keller and think the ticket was a bit much.
“I think it’s kind of ridiculous,†said Fischer. “I don’t see that being a big issue, warranting a ticket.â€
It might not warrant a ticket, but it does warrant coming up with a new name for walking and texting. For now we are going to call it pedexting and Keller said she won't be pedexting again anytime soon.
“Now, I’m careful now, I don’t text and walk because I can’t afford to get another one of these,†Keller said.
