That is true, if Weidman gets a shot it would be partly at least because there's simply no one else. Despite claims to the contrary MMA doesn't have a huge talent pool yet. All the great kick boxers stay in kick boxing all the great bjj guys stay in bjj.

I think that part of the reason why they are lacking challengers in that division is because the champion is Anderson Silva. A lot of guys know that they can't beat him so they switch to different weight classes. Plus the guys that do face him then change weightclasses after the fight because they know that they can't take the title and there is no real point trying for a rematch.

I'd love to see it but with Bellator moving to Spike, Dana won't want to be seen "copying the opposition" by using the tournament format.

Tournaments were the initial backbone of UFC.

They also had one with the midget weight division.
