Lawler was in AWA where loads of blood were spilled. Punk said he was going to be the new King of Tennessee.
So in my opinion, it had to look like King could do some damage like it was done in the old age.

Of course, if it was legit "hardway" blood (as the staples suggest), the question of why is moot. It wasn't on purpose, so it just happened.
